³ So after Abram had been living in Canaan^(A) ten years,^(B) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

⁵ Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”^(A)

⁴ So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot^(A) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old^(B) when he set out from Harran.^{(C) 5} He took his wife Sarai,^(D) his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated^(E) and the people^(F) they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,^(G) and they arrived there.

²⁵ Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.

³ He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines,^(A) and his wives led him astray.^(B)

¹³ After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives^(A) in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him.

A Levite and His Concubine

19 In those days Israel had no king.

Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim^(A) took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.^{(B) 2} But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, ³ her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. ⁴ His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking,^(C) and sleeping there.

²² While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine^(A) Bilhah,^(B) and Israel heard of it.
