And they were all (A)filled with the Holy Spirit and began (B)to speak in other tongues (C)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And (D)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And (E)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking (F)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? For (A)one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but (B)even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

Now, brothers,[a] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some (C)revelation or knowledge or prophecy or (D)teaching? If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? And (E)if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be (F)speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be (G)a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.

For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a](A) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;(B) they utter mysteries(C) by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,(D) encouraging(E) and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue(F) edifies(G) themselves, but the one who prophesies(H) edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[b] but I would rather have you prophesy.(I) The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[c] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.(J)

Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation(K) or knowledge(L) or prophecy or word of instruction?(M) Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?(N) So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.(O)
