Paul Accepted by the Apostles

2 Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem,(A) this time with Barnabas.(B) I took Titus(C) along also. 2 I went in response to a revelation(D) and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles.(E) I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race(F) in vain. 3 Yet not even Titus,(G) who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.(H) 4 This matter arose because some false believers(I) had infiltrated our ranks to spy on(J) the freedom(K) we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. 5 We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel(L) might be preserved for you.

6 As for those who were held in high esteem(M)—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism(N)—they added nothing to my message.(O) 7 On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task(P) of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised,[a](Q) just as Peter(R) had been to the circumcised.[b] 8 For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle(S) to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle(T) to the Gentiles. 9 James,(U) Cephas[c](V) and John, those esteemed as pillars,(W) gave me and Barnabas(X) the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me.(Y) They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles,(Z) and they to the circumcised. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor,(AA) the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

Paul Opposes Cephas

11 When Cephas(AB) came to Antioch,(AC) I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James,(AD) he used to eat with the Gentiles.(AE) But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.(AF) 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas(AG) was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel,(AH) I said to Cephas(AI) in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew.(AJ) How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?(AK)

15 “We who are Jews by birth(AL) and not sinful Gentiles(AM) 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,(AN) but by faith in Jesus Christ.(AO) So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in[d] Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.(AP)

17 “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners,(AQ) doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!(AR) 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

19 “For through the law I died to the law(AS) so that I might live for God.(AT) 20 I have been crucified with Christ(AU) and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.(AV) The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God,(AW) who loved me(AX) and gave himself for me.(AY) 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law,(AZ) Christ died for nothing!”[e]

2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)

9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Paul Opposes Peter (Cephas)

11 But when (AC)Cephas came to (AD)Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he [j]stood condemned. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from (AE)James, he used to (AF)eat with the Gentiles, but when they came, he began to shrink back and separate himself, (AG)fearing [k]the party of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even (AH)Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they (AI)were not [l]straightforward about (AJ)the truth of the gospel, I said to (AK)Cephas before everyone, “If you, being a Jew, (AL)live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?[m]

15 “We are (AM)Jews by nature and not (AN)sinners from among the Gentiles; 16 nevertheless [n]knowing that (AO)a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by (AP)faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since (AQ)by the works of [o]the Law no [p]flesh will be justified. 17 But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found (AR)sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? Mötet med de ansedda i Jerusalem

2 (A) Efter fjorton år kom jag upp till Jerusalem igen, nu med Barnabas[a]. Även Titus[b] hade jag med mig. 2 (B) Jag reste dit efter en uppenbarelse och lade fram – enskilt[c], för de ansedda – det evangelium som jag predikar bland hedningarna. Det var väl inte så att jag kämpade eller hade kämpat förgäves?

3 (C) Men inte ens min följeslagare Titus, som är grek, blev tvingad till omskärelse. 4 (D) Det ville annars de falska bröder som hade nästlat sig in. De hade smugit sig in för att spionera på den frihet vi har i Kristus Jesus och göra oss till slavar. 5 Men vi gav inte efter för dem ens ett ögonblick eller underkastade oss. Vi ville att evangeliets sanning skulle bevaras hos er[d].

6 (E) Och de som ansågs betydelsefulla – hurdana de nu[e] var gör ingen skillnad för mig, Gud ser inte till personens yttre – dessa ansedda ville inte ålägga mig något mer[f]. 7 (F) Tvärtom, de insåg att jag hade blivit betrodd med evangeliet till de oomskurna liksom Petrus till de omskurna. 8 Han som hade gett Petrus kraft att vara apostel för de omskurna har också gett mig kraft att vara det för hedningarna.

9 Och när Jakob, Kefas och Johannes, de som ansågs vara pelarna, förstod vilken nåd jag hade fått, räckte de mig och Barnabas handen till gemenskap. Vi skulle gå till hedningarna, de till de omskurna. 10 Det enda var att vi skulle tänka på de fattiga[g], och det har jag också varit noga med att göra.

Paulus tillrättavisar Kefas

11 Men när Kefas kom till Antiokia[h] gick jag öppet emot honom, eftersom han stod där dömd. 12 (G) Innan det kom några från Jakob[i] brukade han nämligen äta tillsammans med hedningarna, men när de hade kommit drog han sig undan och höll sig avskild av rädsla för de omskurna. 13 Även de andra judarna hycklade på samma sätt, så att till och med Barnabas drogs med i deras hyckleri.

14 (H) Men när jag såg att de inte var på rätt väg[j] efter evangeliets sanning, sade jag till Kefas inför alla: "Om du som är jude kan leva som hedning och inte som jude, varför tvingar du då hedningarna att leva som judar?"

Rättfärdig genom tro, inte gärningar

15 Vi är visserligen judar till födseln och inte hedniska syndare. 16 (I) Men vi vet att människan inte förklaras rättfärdig genom laggärningar utan genom tro på Jesus Kristus. Därför har också vi satt vår tro till Kristus Jesus, för att stå som rättfärdiga genom tro på Kristus[k] och inte genom laggärningar. Genom laggärningar blir ingen människa rättfärdig.

17 Men om vi som söker rättfärdigheten i Kristus visar oss vara syndare, står Kristus då i syndens tjänst? Verkligen inte! 18 Bara om jag bygger upp igen det jag rev ner gör jag mig till överträdare. 19 (J) Jag har genom lagen dött bort från lagen för att leva för Gud. Jag är korsfäst med Kristus, 20 (K) och nu lever inte längre jag, utan Kristus lever i mig. Och det liv jag nu lever i min kropp, det lever jag i tron på Guds Son som har älskat mig och utgett sig för mig. 21 (L) Jag förkastar inte Guds nåd. För om rättfärdighet kunde nås genom lagen, då hade Kristus dött förgäves.
