Just as (A)Abraham (B)believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. Therefore, recognize that (C)it is those who are of faith who are (D)sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God [a]would justify the [b]Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “(E)All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then, (F)those who are of faith are blessed with [c]Abraham, the believer.

10 For all who are of works of [d]the Law are under a curse; for it is written: “(G)Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the Law, to do them.” 11 Now, that (H)no one is justified [e]by [f]the Law before God is evident; for, “[g](I)the righteous one will live by faith.” 12 [h]However, the Law is not [i]of faith; on the contrary, “(J)The person who performs [j]them will live by [k]them.” 13 Christ (K)redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “(L)Cursed is everyone who hangs on (M)a [l]tree”— 14 in order that (N)in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we (O)would receive (P)the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Intent of the Law

15 (Q)Brothers and sisters, (R)I speak [m]in terms of human relations: (S)even though it is only a man’s [n]covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds [o]conditions to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken (T)to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as one would in referring to many, but rather as in referring to one, “(U)And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came (V)430 years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For (W)if the inheritance is [p]based on law, it is no longer [q]based on a promise; but (X)God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.

19 (Y)Why the Law then? It was added on account of the [r]violations, having been (Z)ordered through angels (AA)at the hand of a [s]mediator, until (AB)the Seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now (AC)a mediator is not [t]for one party only; but God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? [u](AD)Far from it! For (AE)if a law had been given that was able to impart life, then righteousness [v]would indeed have been [w]based on law. 22 But the Scripture has (AF)confined [x]everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, [y]we were kept in custody under the Law, (AG)being confined for the faith that was destined to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our [z](AH)guardian to lead us to Christ, so that (AI)we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a [aa](AJ)guardian. 26 For you are all (AK)sons and daughters of God through faith in (AL)Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were (AM)baptized into Christ have (AN)clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 (AO)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is [ab]neither male nor female; for (AP)you are all one in (AQ)Christ Jesus. 29 And if (AR)you [ac]belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s [ad]descendants, heirs according to (AS)promise.

So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[a](A)

Understand, then, that those who have faith(B) are children of Abraham.(C) Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[b](D) So those who rely on faith(E) are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.(F)

10 For all who rely on the works of the law(G) are under a curse,(H) as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”[c](I) 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God,(J) because “the righteous will live by faith.”[d](K) 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”[e](L) 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law(M) by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”[f](N) 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,(O) so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.(P)

The Law and the Promise

15 Brothers and sisters,(Q) let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.(R) Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”[g](S) meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years(T) later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise;(U) but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

19 Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions(V) until the Seed(W) to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels(X) and entrusted to a mediator.(Y) 20 A mediator,(Z) however, implies more than one party; but God is one.

21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not!(AA) For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.(AB) 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin,(AC) so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

Children of God

23 Before the coming of this faith,[h] we were held in custody(AD) under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.(AE) 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came(AF) that we might be justified by faith.(AG) 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.(AH)

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God(AI) through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ(AJ) have clothed yourselves with Christ.(AK) 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free,(AL) nor is there male and female,(AM) for you are all one in Christ Jesus.(AN) 29 If you belong to Christ,(AO) then you are Abraham’s seed,(AP) and heirs(AQ) according to the promise.(AR)
