17 But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found (A)sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? [a](B)Far from it! 18 For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I (C)prove myself to be a wrongdoer. 19 For through [b]the Law I (D)died to [c]the Law, so that I might live for God. 20 I have been (E)crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but (F)Christ lives in me; and [d]the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in (G)the Son of God, who (H)loved me and (I)gave Himself up for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for (J)if righteousness comes through [e]the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

Faith Brings Righteousness

[f]You foolish (K)Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ (L)was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by works of [g]the Law, or by (M)hearing [h]with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun [i]by the Spirit, are you now [j]being perfected by the flesh? Did you [k]suffer so many things in vain—(N)if indeed it was in vain? So then, does He who (O)provides you with the Spirit and (P)works [l]miracles among you, do it by works of [m]the Law, or by (Q)hearing [n]with faith?

Just as (R)Abraham (S)believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. Therefore, recognize that (T)it is those who are of faith who are (U)sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God [o]would justify the [p]Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “(V)All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then, (W)those who are of faith are blessed with [q]Abraham, the believer.

17 But suppose we seek to be made right with God through faith in Christ and then we are found guilty because we have abandoned the law. Would that mean Christ has led us into sin? Absolutely not! 18 Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. 19 For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God. 20 My old self has been crucified with Christ.[a] It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

The Law and Faith in Christ

Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? Have you experienced[b] so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it?

I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.

In the same way, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”[c] The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.

What’s more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would make the Gentiles right in his sight because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, “All nations will be blessed through you.”[d] So all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.
