10 For am I now (A)seeking the favor of people, or of God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a (B)bond-servant of Christ.

Paul Defends His Ministry

11 For (C)I would have you know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel which was preached by me is (D)not [a]of human invention. 12 For (E)I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a (F)revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For you have heard of (G)my former way of life in Judaism, how I (H)used to persecute (I)the church of God beyond measure and (J)tried to destroy it; 14 and I (K)was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my [b]countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my (L)ancestral traditions. 15 But when [c]He who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and (M)called me through His grace was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might (N)preach Him among the Gentiles, (O)I did not immediately consult with [d](P)flesh and blood, 17 (Q)nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to (R)Damascus.

18 Then (S)three years later I went up (T)to Jerusalem to [e]become acquainted with [f](U)Cephas, and stayed with him for fifteen days. 19 But I did not see another one of the apostles except [g](V)James, the Lord’s brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, [h]I assure you (W)before God that I am not lying.) 21 Then (X)I went into the regions of (Y)Syria and (Z)Cilicia. 22 I was still unknown by [i]sight to (AA)the churches of Judea which are (AB)in Christ; 23 but they only kept hearing, “The man who once persecuted us is now preaching (AC)the faith which he once (AD)tried to destroy.” 24 And they (AE)were glorifying God [j]because of me.

The Council at Jerusalem

Then after an interval of fourteen years I (AF)went up again to Jerusalem with (AG)Barnabas, taking (AH)Titus along also. [k]It was because of a (AI)revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the (AJ)gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that somehow I might be (AK)running, or had run, in vain. But not even (AL)Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was (AM)compelled to be circumcised. Yet it was a concern because of the (AN)false brothers secretly brought in, who (AO)had sneaked in to spy on our (AP)freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to (AQ)enslave us. But we did not yield in subjection to them, even for an hour, so that (AR)the truth of the gospel would remain with you. But from those who [l]were of considerable (AS)repute (what they were makes no difference to me; (AT)God shows no favoritism)—well, those who were of repute contributed nothing to me. But on the contrary, seeing that I had been (AU)entrusted with the (AV)gospel [m]to the uncircumcised, just as (AW)Peter had been [n]to the circumcised (for He who was at work for Peter in his (AX)apostleship [o]to the circumcised was at work for me also to the Gentiles), and recognizing (AY)the grace that had been given to me, [p](AZ)James and [q](BA)Cephas and John, who were (BB)reputed to be (BC)pillars, gave to me and (BD)Barnabas the (BE)right [r]hand of fellowship, so that we might (BF)go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. 10 They only asked us to remember the poor—(BG)the very thing I also was eager to do.

10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people?(A) If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul Called by God

11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters,(B) that the gospel I preached(C) is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man,(D) nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation(E) from Jesus Christ.(F)

13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism,(G) how intensely I persecuted the church of God(H) and tried to destroy it.(I) 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous(J) for the traditions of my fathers.(K) 15 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb(L) and called me(M) by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles,(N) my immediate response was not to consult any human being.(O) 17 I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.(P)

18 Then after three years,(Q) I went up to Jerusalem(R) to get acquainted with Cephas[a] and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 I saw none of the other apostles—only James,(S) the Lord’s brother. 20 I assure you before God(T) that what I am writing you is no lie.(U)

21 Then I went to Syria(V) and Cilicia.(W) 22 I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea(X) that are in Christ.(Y) 23 They only heard the report: “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith(Z) he once tried to destroy.”(AA) 24 And they praised God(AB) because of me.

Paul Accepted by the Apostles

Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem,(AC) this time with Barnabas.(AD) I took Titus(AE) along also. I went in response to a revelation(AF) and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles.(AG) I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race(AH) in vain. Yet not even Titus,(AI) who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.(AJ) This matter arose because some false believers(AK) had infiltrated our ranks to spy on(AL) the freedom(AM) we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel(AN) might be preserved for you.

As for those who were held in high esteem(AO)—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism(AP)—they added nothing to my message.(AQ) On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task(AR) of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised,[b](AS) just as Peter(AT) had been to the circumcised.[c] For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle(AU) to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle(AV) to the Gentiles. James,(AW) Cephas[d](AX) and John, those esteemed as pillars,(AY) gave me and Barnabas(AZ) the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me.(BA) They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles,(BB) and they to the circumcised. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor,(BC) the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:

14 And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.

18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother.

20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.

21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;

22 And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ:

23 But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.

24 And they glorified God in me.

Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.

And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)

And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
