For (A)those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, (B)the things of the Spirit. For (C)to be [a]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because (D)the [b]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, (E)nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Pressing Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already (A)attained,[a] or am already (B)perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have [b]apprehended; but one thing I do, (C)forgetting those things which are behind and (D)reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 (E)I press toward the goal for the prize of (F)the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Therefore let us, as many as are (G)mature, (H)have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, (I)God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already [c]attained, (J)let us walk (K)by the same [d]rule, let us be of the same mind.

Sin’s Advantage in the Law

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, (A)I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, (B)“You shall not covet.” But (C)sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For (D)apart from the law sin was dead.

A Prayer of Repentance

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David (A)when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

51 Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies,
(B)Blot out my transgressions.
(C)Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.
(D)Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil (E)in Your sight—
(F)That You may be found just [a]when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.

(G)Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.

10 And the commandment, (A)which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. 12 Therefore (B)the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Law Cannot Save from Sin

13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, (C)sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. (D)For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that (E)in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I (F)delight in the law of God according to (G)the inward man. 23 But (H)I see another law in (I)my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me (J)from this body of death? 25 (K)I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(A)

54 (B)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (C)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (D)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”

57 But he denied [a]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

58 (E)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”

But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

59 (F)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (G)Galilean.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”

Immediately, while he was still speaking, [b]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (H)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (I)“Before the rooster [c]crows, you will deny Me three times.”
