²² For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman^(A) and the other by the free woman.^(B)

¹⁵ So Hagar^(A) bore Abram a son,^(B) and Abram gave the name Ishmael^(C) to the son she had borne.

¹⁰ and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman^(A) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”^(B)

The Birth of Isaac

21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah^(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.^{(B) 2} Sarah became pregnant and bore a son^(C) to Abraham in his old age,^(D) at the very time God had promised him.^(E)

² so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.^(A) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”^(B)

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. ³ So after Abram had been living in Canaan^(C) ten years,^(D) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. ⁴ He slept with Hagar,^(E) and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.^(F)
