²⁴ Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be reckoned as righteous^[a] by faith.^(A)

⁴ For Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.^(A)

¹⁶ yet we know that a person is justified^[a] not by the works of the law but through the faith of Jesus Christ.^[b] And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by the faith of Christ^[c] and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law.^(A)

¹⁷ These are only a shadow of what is to come, but the body belongs to Christ.

²⁴ Wretched person that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? ²⁵ Thanks be to God^[a] through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with my mind I am enslaved to the law of God, but with my flesh I am enslaved to the law of sin.

³⁸ Let it be known to you therefore, brothers and sisters,^[a] that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you;^{(A) 39} by this Jesus^[b] everyone who believes is set free from all those sins^[c] from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.^(B)

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the true form of these realities, it^[a] can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered year after year, make perfect those who approach.^{(A) 2} Otherwise, would they not have ceased being offered, since the worshipers, cleansed once for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sin? ³ But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sin year after year.^{(B) 4} For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.^{(C) 5} Consequently, when Christ^[b] came into the world, he said,

⁸ When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), ⁹ then he added, “See, I have come to do your will.” He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. ¹⁰ And it is by God’s will^[d] that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.^(F)

¹¹ And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.^{(G) 12} But when Christ^[e] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” ¹³ and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.”^{(H) 14} For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

² but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. ³ So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental principles^[a] of the world.^(A)

The Law and the Prophets

¹⁷ “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.^{(A) 18} For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter,^[a] not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.^(B)
