¹⁷ “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners,^(A) doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!^(B)

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

6 What shall we say, then?^(A) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?^{(B) 2} By no means! We are those who have died to sin;^(C) how can we live in it any longer?

⁸ The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,^(A) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God^(B) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.^{(C) 9} No one who is born of God^(D) will continue to sin,^(E) because God’s seed^(F) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. ¹⁰ This is how we know who the children of God^(G) are and who the children of the devil^(H) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love^(I) their brother and sister.^(J)

⁵ But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.^(A) And in him is no sin.^(B)

¹⁵ “We who are Jews by birth^(A) and not sinful Gentiles^(B)

⁷ What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.^(A) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,^(B)

Israel’s Unbelief

³⁰ What then shall we say?^(A) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;^{(B) 31} but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,^(C) have not attained their goal.^{(D) 32} Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.^{(E) 33} As it is written:

² and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle^(A) set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

²⁴ but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.^{(A) 25} Therefore he is able to save^(B) completely^[a] those who come to God^(C) through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.^(D)

²⁶ Such a high priest^(E) truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,^(F) exalted above the heavens.^{(G) 27} Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices^(H) day after day, first for his own sins,^(I) and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all^(J) when he offered himself.^{(K) 28} For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;^(L) but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,^(M) who has been made perfect^(N) forever.
