17 Then Jacob stood up and put his children and his wives on camels; 18 and he drove away all his livestock and all his property which he had acquired, the livestock he possessed which he had acquired in Paddan-aram, (A)to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. 19 Laban had gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stole the [a](B)household idols that were her father’s. 20 And Jacob [b]deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing. 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he got up and crossed the Euphrates River, and set [c]out for the hill country of (C)Gilead.
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 When Laban was informed on the third day that Jacob had fled, 23 he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him a distance of seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 However, (D)God came to Laban the Aramean in a (E)dream of the night and said to him, “[d](F)Be careful that you do not speak to Jacob either good or bad.”
25 And Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen camped in the hill country of Gilead. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done [e]by deceiving me and carrying away my daughters like captives of the sword? 27 Why did you flee secretly and [f]deceive me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with joy and with songs, with (G)tambourine and with (H)lyre; 28 and did not allow me (I)to kiss my [g]grandchildren and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly. 29 It is in [h]my power to do you harm, but (J)the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘[i](K)Be careful not to speak either good or bad to Jacob.’ 30 Now you have indeed gone away because you longed greatly for your father’s house; but why did you steal (L)my gods?” 31 Then Jacob replied to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. 32 (M)The one with whom you find your gods shall not live; in the presence of our relatives [j]point out what is yours [k]among my belongings and take it for yourself.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two slave women, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the [l]household idols and put them in the camel’s saddlebag, and she sat on them. So Laban searched through all the tent, but did not find them. 35 And she said to her father, “May my lord not be angry that I cannot (N)stand in your presence, because the [m]way of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the [n](O)household idols.
36 Then Jacob became angry and argued with Laban; and Jacob said to Laban, “What is my offense? What is my sin that you have hotly pursued me? 37 Though you have searched through all my property, what have you found of all your household property? Set it here in front of my relatives and your relatives, so that they may decide between the two of us. 38 For these twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flocks. 39 I did not even bring to you that which was torn by wild animals; I took the loss myself. You demanded it of my hand whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 This is how I was: by day the [o]heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. 41 For these twenty years I have been in your house; (P)I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you (Q)changed my wages ten times. 42 If (R)the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the fear of Isaac, had not been for me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. (S)God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, so He (T)rendered judgment last night.”
The Covenant of Mizpah
43 Then Laban replied to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, the [p]children are my [q]grandchildren, (U)the flocks are my flocks, and everything that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these daughters of mine or to their children to whom they have given birth? 44 So now come, let’s (V)make a covenant, [r]you and I, and (W)it shall be a witness between [s]you and me.” 45 Then Jacob took (X)a stone and set it up as a memorial stone. 46 Jacob said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” So they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap. 47 Now Laban (Y)called it [t]Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it [u]Galeed. 48 Laban said, “(Z)This heap is a witness between [v]you and me this day.” Therefore it was named Galeed, 49 and [w](AA)Mizpah, for he said, “May the Lord keep watch between [x]you and me when we are [y]absent one from the other. 50 If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one is with us, see, (AB)God is witness between [z]you and me.” 51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Behold this heap and behold the memorial stone which I have set between [aa]you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and the memorial stone is a witness, that I will not pass by this heap to you for harm, and you will not pass by this heap and this memorial stone to me, for harm. 53 (AC)The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, (AD)judge between us.” So Jacob swore by (AE)the fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob (AF)offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his relatives to [ab]the meal; and they ate [ac]the meal and spent the night on the mountain. 55 [ad]Then early in the morning Laban got up, and (AG)kissed his [ae]grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned to his place.
Jacob’s Fear of Esau
32 Now as Jacob went on his way, (AH)the angels of God met him. 2 And when he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s [af]camp.” So he named that place [ag](AI)Mahanaim.
3 Then Jacob (AJ)sent messengers ahead of himself to his brother Esau in the land of (AK)Seir, the [ah]country of (AL)Edom. 4 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says the following: “I have resided with Laban, and (AM)stayed until now; 5 and (AN)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent messengers to tell my lord, (AO)so that I may find favor in your sight.”’”
6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore (AP)he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” 7 Then Jacob was (AQ)greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies; 8 for he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [ai]attacks it, then the company which is left will escape.”
9 Then Jacob said, “(AR)God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, Lord, who said to me, ‘(AS)Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will [aj]make you prosper,’ 10 [ak]I am unworthy (AT)of all the [al]favor and of all the [am]faithfulness, which You have shown to Your servant; for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies. 11 (AU)Save me, please, (AV)from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and [an]attack me and the (AW)mothers with the children. 12 For You said, ‘(AX)I will assuredly [ao]make you prosper and (AY)make your [ap]descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be counted.’”

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(A) on camels,(B) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(C) in Paddan Aram,[a](D) to go to his father Isaac(E) in the land of Canaan.(F)
19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(G) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(H) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(I) Laban the Aramean(J) by not telling him he was running away.(K) 21 So he fled(L) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(M) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(N)
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 On the third day(O) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(P) 23 Taking his relatives(Q) with him(R), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(S) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(T) in a dream at night and said to him,(U) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(V)
25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(W) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(X) You’ve deceived me,(Y) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(Z) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(AA) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(AB) and harps?(AC) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(AD) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(AE) but last night the God of your father(AF) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(AG) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(AH) But why did you steal(AI) my gods?(AJ)”
31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(AK) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(AL) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(AM)
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(AN) and into the tent of the two female servants,(AO) but he found nothing.(AP) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(AQ) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(AR) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(AS) through everything in the tent but found nothing.
35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(AT) I’m having my period.(AU)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(AV)
36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(AW) you that you hunt me down?(AX) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(AY) Put it here in front of your relatives(AZ) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(BA)
38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(BB) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(BC) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(BD) by day or night.(BE) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(BF) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(BG) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(BH) and six years for your flocks,(BI) and you changed my wages(BJ) ten times.(BK) 42 If the God of my father,(BL) the God of Abraham(BM) and the Fear of Isaac,(BN) had not been with me,(BO) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(BP) and last night he rebuked you.(BQ)”
43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(BR) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(BS) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(BT)
45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(BU) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(BV) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[b](BW)
48 Laban said, “This heap(BX) is a witness between you and me today.”(BY) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[c](BZ) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(CA) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(CB) between you and me.”(CC)
51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(CD) and here is this pillar(CE) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(CF) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(CG) and pillar to my side to harm me.(CH) 53 May the God of Abraham(CI) and the God of Nahor,(CJ) the God of their father, judge between us.”(CK)
So Jacob took an oath(CL) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(CM) 54 He offered a sacrifice(CN) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(CO) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.
55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(CP) and blessed(CQ) them. Then he left and returned home.[d](CR)
Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau
32 [e]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(CS) met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(CT) So he named that place Mahanaim.[f](CU)
3 Jacob sent messengers(CV) ahead of him to his brother Esau(CW) in the land of Seir,(CX) the country of Edom.(CY) 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(CZ) Esau: ‘Your servant(DA) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(DB) and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(DC) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(DD) that I may find favor in your eyes.(DE)’”
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(DF)
7 In great fear(DG) and distress(DH) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[g](DI) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[h] the group[i] that is left may escape.”
9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(DJ) God of my father Isaac,(DK) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(DL) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(DM) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(DN) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(DO) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(DP) he will come and attack me,(DQ) and also the mothers with their children.(DR) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(DS) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(DT)’”

34 “(O)Do not think that I came to [g]bring peace on the earth; I did not come to [h]bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to (P)turn a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and (Q)a person’s enemies will be the members of his household.
37 “(R)The one who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And (S)the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 (T)The one who has found his [i]life will lose it, and the one who has lost his [j]life on My account will find it.
The Reward for Service
40 “(U)The one who [k]receives you [l]receives Me, and (V)the one who [m]receives Me [n]receives Him who sent Me. 41 (W)The one who [o]receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and the one who [p]receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person shall receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And (X)whoever gives one of these [q]little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
