27 When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a [a]civilized man, (A)living in tents. 28 Now Isaac loved Esau because [b]he had (B)a taste for game; (C)but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 When Jacob had cooked a (D)stew one day, Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted; 30 and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a mouthful of [c]that red stuff there, for I am exhausted.” Therefore he was called [d]Edom by name. 31 But Jacob said, “[e]First sell me your (E)birthright.” 32 Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “[f]First swear to me”; so he swore an oath to him, and (F)sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and got up and went on his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

Isaac Settles in Gerar

26 Now there was (G)a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to (H)Abimelech king of the Philistines. And the Lord (I)appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; (J)stay in the land of which I shall tell you. Live for a time in this land and (K)I will be with you and (L)bless you, for (M)to you and to your [g]descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish (N)the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. (O)I will multiply your [h]descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your [i]descendants all these lands; and (P)by your [j]descendants all the nations of the earth [k]shall be blessed, because Abraham [l](Q)obeyed Me and fulfilled his duty to Me, and kept My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

So Isaac lived in Gerar. When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “(R)She is my sister,” for he was (S)afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “[m]the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, since she is (T)beautiful.” Now it came about, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down through a window, and saw them, and behold, Isaac was caressing his wife Rebekah. Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she certainly is your wife! So how is it that you said, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘otherwise I might be killed on account of her.’” 10 And (U)Abimelech said, “What is this that you have done to us? One of the people might easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who (V)touches this man or his wife will certainly be put to death.”

12 Now Isaac sowed in that land and [n]reaped in the same year a hundred times as much. And (W)the Lord blessed him, 13 and the man (X)became rich, and continued to grow [o]richer until he became very [p]wealthy; 14 for (Y)he had possessions of flocks [q]and herds, and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him. 15 Now (Z)all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up [r]by filling them with dirt. 16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are [s](AA)too powerful for us.” 17 So Isaac departed from there and camped in the Valley of Gerar, and [t]settled there.

Argument over the Wells

18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which [u]had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he [v]gave them the same names which his father had [w]given them. 19 But when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of [x]flowing water, 20 the herdsmen of Gerar (AB)quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well [y]Esek, because they argued with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over it too, so he named it [z]Sitnah. 22 Then he moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he named it [aa]Rehoboth, for he said, “[ab](AC)At last the Lord has made [ac]room for us, and we will be (AD)fruitful in the land.”

23 And he went up from there to (AE)Beersheba. 24 And the Lord (AF)appeared to him the same night and said,

(AG)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(AH)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (AI)will bless you and multiply your [ad]descendants,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”

25 So he built an (AJ)altar there and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

Covenant with Abimelech

26 Then (AK)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [ae]with his adviser Ahuzzath, and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 Isaac said to them, “(AL)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We have seen plainly (AM)that the Lord has been with you; so we said, ‘An oath must now be taken [af]by us,’ that is, [ag]by you and us. So let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [ah]and have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (AN)blessed of the Lord.” 30 Then (AO)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they got up early and [ai](AP)exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away, and they left him in peace. 32 Now it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it [aj]Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (AQ)Beersheba to this day.

34 When Esau was forty years old (AR)he [ak]married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and (AS)they [al]brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

Jacob’s Deception

27 Now it came about, when Isaac was old and (AT)his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his (AU)older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” Then [am](AV)Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death. Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and (AW)hunt game for me; and prepare a delicious meal for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that (AX)my soul may bless you before I die.”

Now Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home, (AY)Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying, ‘Bring me some game and prepare a delicious meal for me, so that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’ So now, my son, (AZ)listen to [an]me [ao]as I command you. Go now to the flock and [ap]bring me two choice [aq]young goats from there, so that I may prepare them as a delicious meal for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.” 11 But Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, “Behold, my brother Esau is a (BA)hairy man and I am a smooth man. 12 (BB)Perhaps my father will touch me, then I will be like a [ar]deceiver in his sight, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.” 13 But his mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son; only (BC)obey my voice, and go, get the goats for me.” 14 So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made a delicious meal such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the [as]best (BD)garments of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 And she put the skins of the [at]young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 She also gave the delicious meal and the bread which she had made [au]to her son Jacob.

18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. (BE)Come now, sit and eat of my game, so that [av](BF)you may bless me.” 20 Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “(BG)Because the Lord your God made it [aw]come to me.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, so that (BH)I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, and he touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were (BI)hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 25 So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that [ax](BJ)I may bless you.” And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he (BK)blessed him and said,

“See, (BL)the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field (BM)which the Lord has blessed;
28 Now may (BN)God give you of the dew of heaven,
And of the (BO)fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;
29 (BP)May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
(BQ)Be master of your brothers,
(BR)And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
(BS)Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”

The Stolen Blessing

30 Now it came about, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had hardly gone out from the presence of his father Isaac, that his brother Esau came in from his hunting. 31 Then he also made a delicious meal, and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, “(BT)Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that [ay](BU)you may bless me.” 32 His father Isaac said to him, “(BV)Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, (BW)your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Then Isaac [az]trembled violently, and said, “(BX)Who then was he who hunted game and brought it to me, so that I ate from all of it before you came, and blessed him? (BY)Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 When Esau heard the words of his father, (BZ)he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, me as well, my father!” 35 And he said, “(CA)Your brother came deceitfully and has taken away your blessing.” 36 Then Esau said, “[ba]Is he not rightly named (CB)[bb]Jacob, for he has betrayed me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 37 But Isaac replied to Esau, “Behold, I have made him (CC)your master, and I have given to him all his relatives [bc]as servants; and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?” 38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, me as well, my father.” So Esau raised his voice and (CD)wept.

39 Then (CE)his father Isaac answered and said to him,

“Behold, [bd](CF)away from the [be]fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling,
And [bf]away from the dew of heaven from above.
40 And by your sword you shall live,
And (CG)you shall serve your brother;
But it shall come about (CH)when you become restless,
That you will [bg]break his yoke from your neck.”

41 So Esau (CI)held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said [bh]to himself, “(CJ)The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 Now when the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent word and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “Behold your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you. 43 Now then, my son, (CK)obey my voice, and arise, [bi]flee to (CL)Haran, to my brother (CM)Laban! 44 Stay with him (CN)a few days, until your brother’s fury [bj]subsides, 45 until your brother’s anger [bk]against you subsides and he forgets (CO)what you did to him. Then I will send word and get you from there. Why should I lose you both in one day?”

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of [bl]living because of (CP)the daughters of Heth; (CQ)if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Jacob Is Sent Away

28 So Isaac called Jacob and (CR)blessed him and commanded him, [bm]saying to him, “(CS)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of (CT)Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. May [bn](CU)God Almighty (CV)bless you and (CW)make you fruitful and (CX)multiply you, so that you may become a (CY)multitude of peoples. May He also give you the (CZ)blessing of Abraham, to you and to your [bo]descendants with you, so that you may (DA)possess the land where you (DB)live as a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.” Then (DC)Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,(A) a man of the open country,(B) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,(C) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(D)

29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(E) Esau came in from the open country,(F) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(G) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[a])(H)

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(I)

32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

33 But Jacob said, “Swear(J) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(K) to Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(L) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.

So Esau despised his birthright.

Isaac and Abimelek(M)

26 Now there was a famine in the land(N)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(O) in Gerar.(P) The Lord appeared(Q) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(R) live in the land where I tell you to live.(S) Stay in this land for a while,(T) and I will be with you(U) and will bless you.(V) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(W) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(X) I will make your descendants(Y) as numerous as the stars in the sky(Z) and will give them all these lands,(AA) and through your offspring[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,[c](AB) because Abraham obeyed me(AC) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(AD) and my instructions.(AE) So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(AF)

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(AG)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(AH) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(AI)

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(AJ) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(AK) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(AL)

12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AM) because the Lord blessed him.(AN) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AO) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AP) that the Philistines envied him.(AQ) 15 So all the wells(AR) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AS) filling them with earth.

16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AT) you have become too powerful for us.(AU)

17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AV) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AW) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AX) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AY) So he named the well Esek,[d] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AZ) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[e] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[f](BA) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(BB) and we will flourish(BC) in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(BD) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(BE) Do not be afraid,(BF) for I am with you;(BG) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(BH) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(BI)

25 Isaac built an altar(BJ) there and called on the name of the Lord.(BK) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(BL)

26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BM) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BN)

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BO) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BP) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BQ) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BR)

30 Isaac then made a feast(BS) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BT) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BU) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[g] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[h](BV)

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

34 When Esau was forty years old,(BW) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BX) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BY)

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(BZ) he called for Esau his older son(CA) and said to him, “My son.”

“Here I am,” he answered.

Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(CB) Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(CC) to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(CD) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(CE) before I die.”(CF)

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(CG) to hunt game and bring it back, Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(CH) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(CI) Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(CJ) Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(CK) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(CL) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(CM) before he dies.”

11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(CN) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(CO) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(CP) on myself rather than a blessing.”

13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(CQ) Just do what I say;(CR) go and get them for me.”

14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(CS) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(CT) of Esau her older son,(CU) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(CV) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”

“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(CW)

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(CX) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(CY) so that you may give me your blessing.”(CZ)

20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,(DA)” he replied.

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(DB) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(DC) who touched(DD) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(DE) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.

“I am,” he replied.

25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(DF)

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

27 So he went to him and kissed(DG) him(DH). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(DI) he blessed him and said,

“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
    that the Lord has blessed.(DJ)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(DK)
    and earth’s richness(DL)
an abundance of grain(DM) and new wine.(DN)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(DO)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(DP)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(DQ)

30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(DR)

32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(DS)

“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(DT)

33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(DU) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(DV)

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(DW) and said to his father, “Bless(DX) me—me too, my father!”

35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(DY) and took your blessing.”(DZ)

36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[i]?(EA) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(EB) me: He took my birthright,(EC) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(ED) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”

37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(EE) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(EF)

39 His father Isaac answered him,(EG)

“Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(EH) of heaven above.(EI)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(EJ) your brother.(EK)
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck.(EL)

41 Esau held a grudge(EM) against Jacob(EN) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(EO) for my father are near; then I will kill(EP) my brother Jacob.”(EQ)

42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(ER) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(ES) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(ET) Flee at once to my brother Laban(EU) in Harran.(EV) 44 Stay with him for a while(EW) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(EX) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(EY) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(EZ) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(FA) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(FB)

28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(FC) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(FD) Go at once to Paddan Aram,[j](FE) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(FF) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(FG) May God Almighty[k](FH) bless(FI) you and make you fruitful(FJ) and increase your numbers(FK) until you become a community of peoples. May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(FL) so that you may take possession of the land(FM) where you now reside as a foreigner,(FN) the land God gave to Abraham.” Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way,(FO) and he went to Paddan Aram,(FP) to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean,(FQ) the brother of Rebekah,(FR) who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
