Jacó em Betel

35 Deus disse a Jacó:

—Vá para Betel[a] e fique vivendo lá. Faça lá um altar ao Deus que lhe apareceu[b] quando você estava fugindo do seu irmão Esaú.

2 Então Jacó disse à sua família e a todos os que estavam com ele:

—Destruam todos os deuses estranhos que vocês têm, purifiquem-se e mudem de roupa. 3 Vamos sair daqui e ir para Betel. Em Betel vou edificar um altar ao Deus que me ouviu quando eu tive problemas. Ele tem estado sempre comigo em todos os lugares.

4 Então entregaram a Jacó todos os deuses estranhos que tinham e todos os brincos que usavam nas orelhas. E Jacó enterrou tudo ao lado de uma grande árvore que fica perto de Siquém. 5 Então se puseram a caminho, passando por várias cidades. Deus fez com que os habitantes dessas cidades tivessem um medo terrível deles. Por isso, ninguém os perseguiu. 6 Jacó e todas as pessoas que estavam com ele chegaram a Luz, que agora se chama Betel e fica na terra de Canaã. 7 Ali Jacó edificou um altar e chamou aquele lugar de El-Betel[c], porque foi ali que Deus tinha lhe aparecido quando ele estava fugindo do seu irmão.

8 Débora, serva de Rebeca, morreu ali e foi enterrada ao lado do carvalho que ficava perto de Betel. Jacó chamou essa árvore de “Carvalho das Lágrimas”[d].

O novo nome de Jacó

9 Quando Jacó regressou de Padã-Arã, Deus voltou a lhe aparecer e o abençoou. 10 Deus lhe disse:

—O seu nome é Jacó, mas de agora em diante o seu nome não será mais Jacó, senão Israel[e].

Foi assim que Deus lhe deu o nome de Israel.

11 E Deus também lhe disse:

—Eu sou o Deus Todo-Poderoso. Tenha muitos filhos e que eles se tornem uma nação. Que você dê origem a uma multidão de nações. Dos seus descendentes, alguns chegarão a ser reis. 12 A terra que dei a Abraão e a Isaque, também a darei a você, e aos seus descendentes depois de você.

13 Depois Deus subiu e foi embora do lugar de onde tinha falado com ele. 14 Então Jacó levantou ali uma pedra para comemorar o lugar onde Deus tinha lhe falado e derramou sobre ela vinho e azeite para consagrá-la. 15 Jacó chamou Betel ao lugar onde Deus tinha lhe falado.

Raquel morre ao dar à luz

16 Depois saíram de Betel. Quando ainda estavam longe de Efrata, Raquel começou a dar à luz e a sofrer dores de parto terríveis. 17 Ao vê-la sofrendo tanto, a parteira lhe disse:

—Não tenha medo, você vai dar à luz outro filho.

18 Raquel morreu dando à luz. Antes de morrer, deu ao filho o nome de Benoni[f], mas o seu pai o chamou de Benjamim[g].

19 Assim morreu Raquel e foi enterrada no caminho para Efrata, que é também Belém. 20 Jacó levantou uma pedra sobre seu túmulo. Até o dia de hoje ainda é conhecida como a “Pedra do Túmulo de Raquel”. 21 Depois Israel continuou no seu caminho e foi acampar ao sul da “Torre do Rebanho”[h].

22 Enquanto Israel estava vivendo naquela região, Rúben se deitou com Bila, a outra esposa de seu pai. Quando Israel soube disso, ficou furioso.[i]

A família de Israel

Jacó teve doze filhos.

23 Estes foram os filhos que ele teve com Lia: Rúben, o filho mais velho; Simeão, Levi, Judá, Issacar e Zebulom.

24 Estes foram os filhos que teve com Raquel: José e Benjamim.

25 Estes foram os filhos que teve com Bila, a serva de Raquel: Dã e Naftali.

26 Estes foram os filhos que teve com Zilpa, a serva de Lia: Gade e Aser.

Estes foram os filhos de Jacó que nasceram em Padã-Arã.

A morte de Isaque

27 Depois Jacó foi ver o seu pai, Isaque, em Mamre, de Quiriate-Arbá, que é também chamado de Hebrom, onde Abraão e Isaque tinham vivido. 28 Aos cento e oitenta anos, 29 Isaque deu o seu último suspiro, morreu e juntou-se aos seus antepassados. Ele teve uma vida longa. Os seus filhos, Esaú e Jacó, o enterraram.

O Retorno de Jacó a Betel

35 Deus disse a Jacó: “Suba a Betel[a] e estabeleça-se lá, e faça um altar ao Deus que lhe apareceu quando você fugia do seu irmão Esaú”.

2 Disse, pois, Jacó aos de sua casa e a todos os que estavam com ele: “Livrem-se dos deuses estrangeiros que estão entre vocês, purifiquem-se e troquem de roupa. 3 Venham! Vamos subir a Betel, onde farei um altar ao Deus que me ouviu no dia da minha angústia e que tem estado comigo por onde tenho andado”. 4 Então entregaram a Jacó todos os deuses estrangeiros que possuíam e os brincos que usavam nas orelhas, e Jacó os enterrou ao pé da grande árvore, próximo a Siquém. 5 Quando eles partiram, o terror de Deus caiu de tal maneira sobre as cidades ao redor que ninguém ousou perseguir os filhos de Jacó.

6 Jacó e todos os que com ele estavam chegaram a Luz, que é Betel, na terra de Canaã. 7 Nesse lugar construiu um altar e lhe deu o nome de El-Betel[b], porque ali Deus havia se revelado[c] a ele, quando fugia do seu irmão.

8 Débora, ama de Rebeca, morreu e foi sepultada perto de Betel, ao pé do Carvalho, que por isso foi chamado Alom-Bacute[d].

9 Depois que Jacó retornou de Padã-Arã, Deus lhe apareceu de novo e o abençoou, 10 dizendo: “Seu nome é Jacó, mas você não será mais chamado Jacó; seu nome será Israel”. Assim lhe deu o nome de Israel.

11 E Deus ainda lhe disse: “Eu sou o Deus todo-poderoso[e]; seja prolífero e multiplique-se. De você procederão uma nação e uma comunidade de nações, e reis estarão entre os seus descendentes. 12 A terra que dei a Abraão e a Isaque, dou a você; e também aos seus futuros descendentes darei esta terra”. 13 A seguir, Deus elevou-se do lugar onde estivera falando com Jacó.

14 Jacó levantou uma coluna de pedra no lugar em que Deus lhe falara, e derramou sobre ela uma oferta de bebidas[f] e a ungiu com óleo. 15 Jacó deu o nome de Betel ao lugar onde Deus tinha falado com ele.

A Morte de Isaque e de Raquel

16 Eles partiram de Betel, e quando ainda estavam a certa distância de Efrata, Raquel começou a dar à luz com grande dificuldade. 17 E, enquanto padecia muito, tentando dar à luz, a parteira lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, pois você ainda terá outro menino”. 18 Já a ponto de sair-lhe a vida, quando estava morrendo, deu ao filho o nome de Benoni[g]. Mas o pai deu-lhe o nome de Benjamim[h].

19 Assim morreu Raquel e foi sepultada junto do caminho de Efrata, que é Belém. 20 Sobre a sua sepultura Jacó levantou uma coluna, e até o dia de hoje aquela coluna marca o túmulo de Raquel.

21 Israel partiu novamente e armou acampamento adiante de Migdal-Éder[i]. 22 Na época em que Israel vivia naquela região, Rúben deitou-se com Bila, concubina de seu pai. E Israel ficou sabendo disso.

Jacó teve doze filhos:

23 Estes foram seus filhos com Lia:

Rúben, o filho mais velho de Jacó,

Simeão, Levi, Judá, Issacar e Zebulom.

24 Estes foram seus filhos com Raquel:

José e Benjamim.

25 Estes foram seus filhos com Bila, serva de Raquel:

Dã e Naftali.

26 Estes foram seus filhos com Zilpa, serva de Lia:

Gade e Aser.

Foram esses os filhos de Jacó, nascidos em Padã-Arã.

27 Depois Jacó foi visitar seu pai Isaque em Manre, perto de Quiriate-Arba, que é Hebrom, onde Abraão e Isaque tinham morado. 28 Isaque viveu cento e oitenta anos. 29 Morreu em idade bem avançada e foi reunido aos seus antepassados. E seus filhos Esaú e Jacó o sepultaram.

Jacob Returns to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel(A) and settle there, and build an altar(B) there to God,(C) who appeared to you(D) when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”(E)

2 So Jacob said to his household(F) and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods(G) you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.(H) 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,(I) who answered me in the day of my distress(J) and who has been with me wherever I have gone.(K)” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,(L) and Jacob buried them under the oak(M) at Shechem.(N) 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God(O) fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.(P)

6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz(Q) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.(R) 7 There he built an altar,(S) and he called the place El Bethel,[a](T) because it was there that God revealed himself to him(U) when he was fleeing from his brother.(V)

8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse,(W) died and was buried under the oak(X) outside Bethel.(Y) So it was named Allon Bakuth.[b]

9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c](Z) God appeared to him again and blessed him.(AA) 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e]”(AB) So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f];(AC) be fruitful and increase in number.(AD) A nation(AE) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.(AF) 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.(AG)”(AH) 13 Then God went up from him(AI) at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar(AJ) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering(AK) on it; he also poured oil on it.(AL) 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.[g](AM)

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac(AN)

16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath,(AO) Rachel(AP) began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife(AQ) said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”(AR) 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.[h](AS) But his father named him Benjamin.[i](AT)

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath(AU) (that is, Bethlehem(AV)). 20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day(AW) that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.(AX)

21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.(AY) 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine(AZ) Bilhah,(BA) and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

23 The sons of Leah:(BB)

Reuben the firstborn(BC) of Jacob,

Simeon, Levi, Judah,(BD) Issachar and Zebulun.(BE)

24 The sons of Rachel:

Joseph(BF) and Benjamin.(BG)

25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:(BH)

Dan and Naphtali.(BI)

26 The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:(BJ)

Gad(BK) and Asher.(BL)

These were the sons of Jacob,(BM) who were born to him in Paddan Aram.(BN)

27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac(BO) in Mamre,(BP) near Kiriath Arba(BQ) (that is, Hebron),(BR) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.(BS) 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.(BT) 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,(BU) old and full of years.(BV) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.(BW)

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (A)Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, (B)who appeared to you (C)when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

2 And Jacob said to his (D)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (E)the foreign gods that are among you, (F)purify yourselves, and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, (G)who answered me in the day of my distress (H)and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign [a]gods which were in their hands, and the (I)earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under (J)the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.

5 And they journeyed, and (K)the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to (L)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7 And he (M)built an altar there and called the place [b]El Bethel, because (N)there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

8 Now (O)Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called [c]Allon Bachuth.

9 Then (P)God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and (Q)blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (R)your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, (S)but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. 11 Also God said to him: (T)“I am God Almighty. (U)Be fruitful and multiply; (V)a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The (W)land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” 13 Then God (X)went[d] up from him in the place where He talked with him. 14 So Jacob (Y)set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, (Z)Bethel.

Death of Rachel

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; (AA)you will have this son also.” 18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name [e]Ben-Oni; but his father called him [f]Benjamin. 19 So (AB)Rachel died and was buried on the way to (AC)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave (AD)to this day.

21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond (AE)the tower of Eder. 22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and (AF)lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were (AG)Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

Death of Isaac

27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at (AH)Mamre, or (AI)Kirjath Arba[g] (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and (AJ)was [h]gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And (AK)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
