Dina é desonrada
34 Certa vez Dina, a filha de Jacó e de Leia, foi fazer uma visita a algumas moças daquele lugar. 2 Hamor, o heveu, que era chefe daquela região, tinha um filho chamado Siquém. Este viu Dina, pegou-a e a forçou a ter relações com ele. 3 E ele a achou tão atraente, que se apaixonou por ela e procurou fazer com que ela o amasse. 4 Depois disse ao seu pai:
— Peça esta moça em casamento para mim.
5 Jacó ficou sabendo que Siquém havia desonrado a sua filha Dina. Porém, como os seus filhos estavam no campo com o gado, não disse nada até que eles voltaram para casa. 6 Enquanto isso, Hamor, o pai de Siquém, foi falar com Jacó. 7 Quando os filhos de Jacó chegaram do campo e souberam do caso, ficaram indignados e furiosos, pois Siquém havia feito uma coisa vergonhosa em Israel, desonrando a filha de Jacó. Isso era uma coisa que não se devia fazer. 8 Mas Hamor lhes disse:
— O meu filho Siquém está apaixonado pela filha de vocês. Eu peço que vocês deixem que ela case com ele. 9 Fiquemos parentes; nós casaremos com as filhas de vocês, e vocês casarão com as nossas. 10 Fiquem aqui com a gente, morando na nossa região. Comprem terras onde quiserem e façam negócios por aqui.
11 Depois Siquém disse ao pai e aos irmãos de Dina:
— Façam este favor para mim, e eu lhes darei o que quiserem. 12 Peçam os presentes que quiserem e digam quanto querem que eu pague pela moça, mas deixem que ela case comigo.
13 Como Siquém havia desonrado a irmã deles, os filhos de Jacó foram falsos na resposta que deram a ele e ao seu pai Hamor. 14 Eles disseram assim:
— Não podemos deixar que a nossa irmã case com um homem que não tenha sido circuncidado, pois isso seria uma vergonha para nós. 15 Só podemos aceitar com esta condição: que vocês fiquem como nós, quer dizer, que todos os seus homens sejam circuncidados. 16 Aí, sim, vocês poderão casar com as nossas filhas, e nós casaremos com as filhas de vocês. Nós viveremos no meio de vocês, e seremos todos um povo só. 17 Mas, se vocês não aceitarem a nossa condição e não quiserem ser circuncidados, nós iremos embora e levaremos a nossa irmã.
18 Hamor e o seu filho Siquém concordaram com a condição. 19 Sem perda de tempo, o moço foi circuncidado, pois estava apaixonado pela filha de Jacó. E Siquém era a pessoa mais respeitada na família do seu pai.
20 Depois Hamor e o seu filho Siquém foram até o portão da cidade, onde eram tratados os negócios, e disseram aos moradores da cidade:
21 — Essa gente é amiga. Vamos deixar que eles fiquem morando e negociando aqui, pois há terras que chegam para eles. Nós poderemos casar com as filhas deles, e eles poderão casar com as nossas. 22 Mas eles só concordam em viver entre nós e se tornar um só povo com a gente se aceitarmos esta condição: todos os nossos homens precisam ser circuncidados, como eles são. 23 E será que não ficaremos com todo o gado deles e com tudo o que eles têm? É só aceitarmos a condição, e eles ficarão morando entre nós.
24 Todos os homens maiores de idade concordaram com Hamor e com o seu filho Siquém e foram circuncidados. 25 Três dias depois, quando os homens sentiam fortes dores, dois filhos de Jacó, Simeão e Levi, irmãos de Dina, pegaram as suas espadas, entraram na cidade sem ninguém notar e mataram todos os homens. 26 E Hamor e Siquém também foram mortos. Em seguida Simeão e Levi tiraram Dina da casa de Siquém e saíram. 27 Depois da matança os outros filhos de Jacó roubaram as coisas de valor que havia na cidade para se vingar da desonra da sua irmã.
28 Eles levaram as ovelhas e as cabras, o gado, os jumentos e tudo o que havia na cidade e no campo. 29 Tiraram das casas todas as coisas de valor e levaram como prisioneiras as mulheres e as crianças. 30 Então Jacó disse a Simeão e a Levi:
— Vocês me puseram numa situação difícil. Agora os cananeus, os perizeus e todos os moradores destas terras vão ficar com ódio de mim. Eu não tenho muitos homens. Se eles se ajuntarem e me atacarem, a minha família inteira será morta.
31 Mas eles responderam:
— Nós não podíamos deixar que a nossa irmã fosse tratada como uma prostituta.

O Conflito entre os Filhos de Jacó e os Siquemitas
34 Certa vez, Diná, a filha que Lia dera a Jacó, saiu para conhecer as mulheres daquela terra. 2 Siquém, filho de Hamor, o heveu, governador daquela região, viu-a, agarrou-a e a violentou. 3 Mas o seu coração foi atraído por Diná, filha de Jacó, e ele amou a moça e falou-lhe com ternura. 4 Por isso Siquém foi dizer a seu pai Hamor: “Consiga-me aquela moça para que seja minha mulher”.
5 Quando Jacó soube que sua filha Diná tinha sido desonrada, seus filhos estavam no campo, com os rebanhos; por isso esperou calado até que regressassem.
6 Então Hamor, pai de Siquém, foi conversar com Jacó. 7 Quando os filhos de Jacó voltaram do campo e souberam de tudo, ficaram profundamente entristecidos e irados, porque Siquém tinha cometido um ato vergonhoso em[a] Israel, ao deitar-se com a filha de Jacó — coisa que não se faz.
8 Mas Hamor lhes disse: “Meu filho Siquém apaixonou-se pela filha de vocês. Por favor, entreguem-na a ele para que seja sua mulher. 9 Casem-se entre nós; dêem-nos suas filhas e tomem para si as nossas. 10 Estabeleçam-se entre nós. A terra está aberta para vocês: habitem-na, façam comércio[b] nela e adquiram propriedades”.
11 Então Siquém disse ao pai e aos irmãos de Diná: “Concedam-me este favor, e eu lhes darei o que me pedirem. 12 Aumentem quanto quiserem o preço e o presente pela noiva, e pagarei o que me pedirem. Tão-somente me dêem a moça por mulher”.
13 Os filhos de Jacó, porém, responderam com falsidade a Siquém e a seu pai Hamor, por ter Siquém desonrado Diná, a irmã deles. 14 Disseram: “Não podemos fazer isso; jamais entregaremos nossa irmã a um homem que não seja circuncidado. Seria uma vergonha para nós. 15 Daremos nosso consentimento a vocês com uma condição: que vocês se tornem como nós, circuncidando todos os do sexo masculino. 16 Só então lhes daremos as nossas filhas e poderemos casar-nos com as suas. Nós nos estabeleceremos entre vocês e seremos um só povo. 17 Mas se não aceitarem circuncidar-se, tomaremos nossa irmã[c] e partiremos”. 18 A proposta deles pareceu boa a Hamor e a seu filho Siquém. 19 O jovem, que era o mais respeitado de todos os da casa de seu pai, não demorou em cumprir o que pediram, porque realmente gostava da filha de Jacó.
20 Assim Hamor e seu filho Siquém dirigiram-se à porta da cidade para conversar com os seus concidadãos. E disseram: 21 “Esses homens são de paz. Permitam que eles habitem em nossa terra e façam comércio entre nós; a terra tem bastante lugar para eles. Poderemos casar com as suas filhas, e eles com as nossas. 22 Mas eles só consentirão em viver conosco como um só povo sob a condição de que todos os nossos homens sejam circuncidados, como eles. 23 Lembrem-se de que os seus rebanhos, os seus bens e todos os seus outros animais passarão a ser nossos. Aceitemos então a condição para que se estabeleçam em nosso meio”.
24 Todos os que saíram para reunir-se à porta da cidade concordaram com Hamor e com seu filho Siquém, e todos os homens e meninos da cidade foram circuncidados.
25 Três dias depois, quando ainda sofriam dores, dois filhos de Jacó, Simeão e Levi, irmãos de Diná, pegaram suas espadas e atacaram a cidade desprevenida, matando todos os homens. 26 Mataram ao fio da espada Hamor e seu filho Siquém, tiraram Diná da casa de Siquém e partiram. 27 Vieram então os outros filhos de Jacó e, passando pelos corpos, saquearam a cidade onde[d] sua irmã tinha sido desonrada. 28 Apoderaram-se das ovelhas, dos bois e dos jumentos, e de tudo o que havia na cidade e no campo. 29 Levaram as mulheres e as crianças, e saquearam todos os bens e tudo o que havia nas casas.
30 Então Jacó disse a Simeão e a Levi: “Vocês me puseram em grandes apuros, atraindo sobre mim o ódio[e] dos cananeus e dos ferezeus, habitantes desta terra. Somos poucos, e se eles juntarem suas forças e nos atacarem, eu e a minha família seremos destruídos”.
31 Mas eles responderam: “Está certo ele tratar nossa irmã como uma prostituta?”

Dinah and the Shechemites
34 Now Dinah,(A) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem(B) son of Hamor(C) the Hivite,(D) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(E) 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah(F) daughter of Jacob;(G) he loved(H) the young woman and spoke tenderly(I) to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(J)
5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(K) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(L) 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(M) and furious,(N) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[a] Israel(O) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(P)
8 But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.(Q) 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.(R) 10 You can settle among us;(S) the land is open to you.(T) Live in it, trade[b] in it,(U) and acquire property in it.(V)”
11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes,(W) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride(X) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”
13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled,(Y) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully(Z) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.(AA) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition(AB) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.(AC) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves.(AD) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.(AE) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”
18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored(AF) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.(AG) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city(AH) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it;(AI) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.(AJ) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised,(AK) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?(AL) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.(AM)”
24 All the men who went out of the city gate(AN) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,(AO) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon(AP) and Levi,(AQ) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords(AR) and attacked the unsuspecting city,(AS) killing every male.(AT) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword(AU) and took Dinah(AV) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city(AW) where[c] their sister had been defiled.(AX) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys(AY) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.(AZ) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children,(BA) taking as plunder(BB) everything in the houses.(BC)
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble(BD) on me by making me obnoxious(BE) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.(BF) We are few in number,(BG) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?(BH)”

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.
8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.
19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their's be our's? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
