Jacó chega a Padã-Arã
29 Jacó seguiu viagem e, por fim, chegou à terra do leste. 2 Viu um poço ao longe e, junto ao poço, no campo, três rebanhos de ovelhas, à espera de que lhes dessem água. Uma pedra pesada cobria a boca do poço.
3 Era costume naquele lugar esperar que todos os rebanhos chegassem para, então, remover a pedra e dar água aos animais. Depois, a pedra era recolocada na boca do poço. 4 Jacó se aproximou dos pastores e perguntou: “De onde vocês são, amigos?”.
“Somos de Harã”, disseram eles.
5 “Conhecem um homem chamado Labão, neto de Naor?”, perguntou Jacó.
“Sim, conhecemos”, responderam eles.
6 “Ele vai bem?”, perguntou Jacó.
“Sim, vai bem”, disseram. “Olhe, ali vem Raquel, filha dele, com o rebanho.”
7 Jacó disse: “Ainda é dia claro, cedo demais para recolher os animais. Por que vocês não dão de beber às ovelhas, para que elas possam voltar a pastar?”.
8 “Não podemos dar de beber aos animais enquanto não chegarem todos os rebanhos”, responderam. “Só então os pastores removem a pedra da boca do poço e damos de beber a todas as ovelhas.”
9 Jacó ainda conversava com eles quando Raquel chegou com o rebanho de seu pai, pois era pastora. 10 Uma vez que Raquel era sua prima, filha de Labão, irmão de sua mãe, e as ovelhas pertenciam a seu tio Labão, Jacó foi até o poço, removeu a pedra que o cobria e deu de beber ao rebanho de seu tio. 11 Então Jacó beijou Raquel e chorou em alta voz. 12 Explicou para Raquel que era seu primo por parte do pai dela e filho de Rebeca, tia dela. Raquel foi correndo contar a seu pai, Labão.
13 Assim que Labão soube que seu sobrinho Jacó havia chegado, correu ao seu encontro. Ele o abraçou, o beijou e o levou para casa. Depois que Jacó lhe contou sua história, 14 Labão exclamou: “Você é, de fato, sangue do meu sangue!”.
Jacó se casa com Lia e Raquel
Quando Jacó estava na casa de Labão havia cerca de um mês, 15 Labão lhe disse: “Você não deve trabalhar de graça para mim só porque somos parentes. Diga-me qual deve ser o seu salário”.
16 Labão tinha duas filhas. A mais velha se chamava Lia, e a mais nova, Raquel. 17 Os olhos de Lia eram sem brilho,[a] mas Raquel tinha bela aparência e rosto atraente. 18 Visto que Jacó estava apaixonado por Raquel, disse a Labão: “Trabalharei para o senhor por sete anos se me der Raquel, sua filha mais nova, para ser minha esposa”.
19 “Melhor entregá-la a você do que a qualquer outro”, respondeu Labão. “Fique aqui e trabalhe comigo.” 20 Então Jacó trabalhou sete anos por Raquel. Ele a amava tanto que lhe pareceram apenas alguns dias.
21 Chegada a hora, Jacó disse a Labão. “Cumpri minha parte do acordo. Agora, dê-me minha esposa, para que eu me deite com ela.”
22 Labão convidou toda a vizinhança e preparou uma grande festa de casamento. 23 À noite, porém, quando estava escuro, Labão tomou Lia e a entregou a Jacó, e Jacó se deitou com ela. 24 (Labão deu sua serva Zilpa a Lia para servi-la.)
25 Na manhã seguinte, quando Jacó acordou, viu que era Lia. Então Jacó perguntou a Labão: “O que o senhor fez comigo? Trabalhei sete anos por Raquel! Por que o senhor me enganou?”.
26 Labão respondeu: “Aqui não é costume casar a filha mais nova antes da mais velha. 27 Espere, contudo, até terminar a semana de núpcias, e eu também lhe entregarei Raquel, desde que você prometa trabalhar mais sete anos para mim”.
28 Jacó concordou em trabalhar mais sete anos. Uma semana depois de Jacó ter se casado com Lia, Labão lhe entregou Raquel. 29 (Labão deu sua serva Bila a Raquel para servi-la.) 30 Jacó se deitou também com Raquel, a quem ele amava muito mais que a Lia. Então permaneceu ali e trabalhou mais sete anos para Labão.
Os filhos de Jacó
31 Quando o Senhor viu que Lia não era amada, permitiu que ela tivesse filhos; Raquel, porém, era estéril. 32 Lia engravidou e deu à luz um filho. Chamou-o de Rúben,[b] pois disse: “O Senhor viu minha infelicidade, e agora meu marido me amará”.
33 Pouco tempo depois, Lia engravidou novamente e deu à luz outro filho. Chamou-o de Simeão,[c] pois disse: “O Senhor ouviu que eu não era amada e me deu outro filho”.
34 Lia engravidou pela terceira vez e deu à luz outro filho. Chamou-o de Levi,[d] pois disse: “Certamente, desta vez meu marido terá afeição por mim, pois lhe dei três filhos!”.
35 Lia engravidou mais uma vez e deu à luz outro filho. Chamou-o de Judá,[e] pois disse: “Agora louvarei ao Senhor!”. Então, parou de ter filhos.

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram
29 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.(A) 2 There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well.(B) The stone(C) over the mouth of the well was large. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone(D) away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep.(E) Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.
4 Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”(F)
“We’re from Harran,(G)” they replied.
5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”(H)
“Yes, we know him,” they answered.
6 Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”
“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel(I) with the sheep.(J)”
7 “Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”
8 “We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone(K) has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water(L) the sheep.”
9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep,(M) for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel(N) daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone(O) away from the mouth of the well and watered(P) his uncle’s sheep.(Q) 11 Then Jacob kissed(R) Rachel and began to weep aloud.(S) 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative(T) of her father and a son of Rebekah.(U) So she ran and told her father.(V)
13 As soon as Laban(W) heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him(X) and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”(Y)
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative(Z) of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages(AA) should be.”
16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah,(AB) and the name of the younger was Rachel.(AC) 17 Leah had weak[a] eyes, but Rachel(AD) had a lovely figure and was beautiful.(AE) 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel(AF) and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”(AG)
19 Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel,(AH) but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.(AI)
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.(AJ)”
22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.(AK) 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah(AL) and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah(AM) to his daughter as her attendant.(AN)
25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me?(AO) I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?(AP)”
26 Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.(AQ) 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week;(AR) then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.(AS)”
28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.(AT) 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah(AU) to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.(AV) 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.(AW) And he worked for Laban another seven years.(AX)
Jacob’s Children
31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,(AY) he enabled her to conceive,(AZ) but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(BA) She named him Reuben,[b](BB) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.(BC) Surely my husband will love me now.”
33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(BD) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[c](BE)
34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(BF) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[d](BG)
35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[e](BH) Then she stopped having children.(BI)

29 Then Ya’akov went on his journey, and came into the eretz of the bnei kedem.
2 And he looked, and hinei a be’er in the sadeh, and, hinei, there were shloshah edrei tzon lying by it; for out of that be’er they watered the edarim: and a great even (stone) was upon the mouth of the be’er.
3 And to there were all the edarim gathered: and they rolled the even (stone) from the mouth of the be’er, and watered the tzon, and put the even (stone) again upon the mouth of the be’er in its place.
4 And Ya’akov said unto them, My brethren, where are you from? And they said, Of Charan are we.
5 And he said unto them, Know ye Lavan ben Nachor? And they said, We know him.
6 And he said unto them, Is the shalom with him? And they said, Shalom; and, hinei, Rachel his bat cometh with the tzon.
7 And he said, Look, the sun is still high, neither is it time that the flock should be gathered together; water ye the tzon, and go and feed them.
8 And they said, We cannot, until all the edarim be gathered together, and till they roll the even (stone) from the mouth of the be’er; then we water the tzon.
9 And while he yet spoke with them, Rachel came with the tzon of her av; for she was a ro’ah (shepherdess).
10 And it came to pass, when Ya’akov saw Rachel bat Lavan achi immo, and the tzon of Lavan achi immo, that Ya’akov went near, and rolled the even (stone) from the mouth of the be’er, and watered the tzon of Lavan achi immo.
11 And Ya’akov kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
12 And Ya’akov told Rachel that he was the relative of her av, and that he was ben Rivkah; and she ran and told her av.
13 And it came to pass, when Lavan heard the news of Ya’akov ben achoto, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his bais. And he told Lavan all these things.
14 And Lavan said to him, Surely thou art my etzem (bone) and my basar. And he abode with him the space of a chodesh (month).
15 And Lavan said unto Ya’akov, Because thou art my relative, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall thy maskoret (wages) be?
16 And Lavan had two banot: the shem of the elder was Leah, and the shem of the younger was Rachel.
17 Leah had weak eyes; but Rachel was yafeh and lovely in form.
18 And Ya’akov loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee sheva shanim for Rachel thy bat haketannah (younger daughter).
19 And Lavan said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another ish; abide with me.
20 And Ya’akov served sheva shanim for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few yamim, because of the ahavah he had for her.
21 And Ya’akov said unto Lavan, Give me my isha, for my yamim are completed, that I may go in unto her.
22 And Lavan gathered together all the anshei hamakom, and made a mishteh (feast).
23 And it came to pass in the erev, that he took Leah his bat, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
24 And Lavan gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah shifchato (his maid) for a shifchah.
25 And it came to pass, that in the boker, hinei, it was Leah! And he said to Lavan, What is this thou hast done unto me? Did not I serve with thee for Rachel? So why then hast thou deceived me?
26 And Lavan said, It must not be so done in our land, to give the younger before the bechirah.
27 Finish her shvu’a (week), and we will give thee this also for the avodah (service, work) which thou shalt do for me yet sheva shanim acherot.
28 And Ya’akov did so, and fulfilled her shvu’a; and he gave him Rachel his bat to be his isha also.
29 And Lavan gave to his bat Rachel Bilhah his shifchah to be her shifchah.
30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served him yet sheva shanim acherot.
31 And when Hashem saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb but Rachel was barren.
32 And Leah conceived, and bore a ben, and she called shmo Reuven: for she said, Surely Hashem hath looked upon my misery; now therefore my ish will love me.
33 And she conceived again, and bore ben; and said, Because Hashem hath heard I was hated, He hath therefore given me this also; and she called shmo Shimon.
34 And she conceived again, and bore ben; and said, Now this time will my ish yillaveh (become attached) unto me, because I have born him shloshah banim: therefore was shmo called Levi.
35 And she conceived again, and bore ben; and she said, Now will odeh (I praise) Hashem; therefore she called shmo Yehudah; and stopped giving birth.
