Isaque abençoa Jacó
27 Isaque já estava bem velho e havia ficado cego. Um dia ele chamou Esaú, o seu filho mais velho, e disse:
— Meu filho!
— Estou aqui, pai — respondeu ele.
2 O pai lhe disse:
— Você está vendo que estou velho e um dia desses vou morrer. 3 Pegue o seu arco e as suas flechas, vá até o campo e cace um animal. 4 Prepare uma comida saborosa, como eu gosto, e traga aqui para mim. Depois de comer, eu lhe darei a minha bênção, antes de morrer.
5 Acontece que Rebeca escutou o que Isaque disse a Esaú. Por isso, quando ele saiu para caçar, 6 ela disse a Jacó:
— Escutei agora mesmo uma conversa do seu pai com o seu irmão Esaú. O seu pai disse assim: 7 “Vá caçar um animal e prepare uma comida saborosa para mim. Depois de comer, eu lhe darei a minha bênção na presença de Deus, o Senhor, antes de morrer.” 8 Agora, meu filho — continuou Rebeca — escute bem e faça o que eu vou dizer. 9 Vá ao lugar onde estão os nossos animais e traga dois cabritos dos melhores. Eu vou preparar uma comida saborosa, como o seu pai gosta, 10 e você vai levá-la para ele comer. Depois o seu pai vai abençoar você, antes que ele morra.
11 Aí Jacó disse à mãe:
— O meu irmão é muito peludo, e eu não. 12 Se o meu pai me apalpar e descobrir que sou eu, ele vai saber que eu estou tentando enganá-lo. Então ele vai me amaldiçoar em vez de me abençoar.
13 Mas a mãe respondeu:
— Nesse caso, que a maldição caia sobre mim, meu filho. Faça exatamente o que eu disse: vá e traga os cabritos para mim.
14 Jacó foi, pegou os cabritos e os levou à mãe, e ela preparou uma comida saborosa, como Isaque gostava. 15 Depois ela pegou a melhor roupa de Esaú, que estava guardada em casa, e com ela vestiu Jacó. 16 Com a pele dos cabritos ela cobriu as mãos e o pescoço de Jacó, que não tinha pelos. 17 Depois entregou a Jacó a comida gostosa e o pão que ela havia feito.
18 Então Jacó foi até onde o pai estava e disse:
— Pai!
— Aqui estou — respondeu ele. — Quem é você, meu filho?
19 — Eu sou Esaú, o seu filho mais velho — disse Jacó. — Já fiz o que o senhor mandou. Levante-se, por favor; sente-se, coma da carne do animal que cacei e depois me abençoe.
20 Aí Isaque perguntou:
— Mas como foi que você achou a caça tão depressa, meu filho?
Jacó respondeu:
— O Senhor, seu Deus, me ajudou.
21 Então Isaque disse a Jacó:
— Chegue mais perto para que eu possa apalpar você. Assim vou saber se você é Esaú mesmo ou não.
22 Jacó chegou perto de Isaque, e ele o apalpou e disse:
— A sua voz é a voz de Jacó, mas as mãos parecem as mãos de Esaú.
23 Assim, Isaque não reconheceu que era Jacó, pois as suas mãos estavam peludas como as de Esaú, e por isso ele o abençoou. 24 Mas, antes de abençoá-lo, perguntou mais uma vez:
— Você é mesmo o meu filho Esaú?
— Sou, sim — respondeu Jacó.
25 Então o pai disse:
— Traga a carne da caça para que eu coma. Depois eu o abençoarei.
Jacó serviu a comida ao seu pai e também trouxe vinho. Isaque comeu, e bebeu, 26 e depois disse:
— Venha cá, meu filho, e me dê um beijo.
27 Jacó chegou perto e beijou o pai. Quando sentiu o cheiro da roupa que Jacó estava usando, Isaque o abençoou e disse assim:
“Ah! O cheiro do meu filho
é como o cheiro de um campo
que o Senhor Deus abençoou.
28 Meu filho, que Deus lhe dê
o orvalho do céu;
que os seus campos produzam
boas colheitas
e fartura de trigo e vinho.
29 Que nações sejam dominadas por você,
e que você seja respeitado pelos povos.
Que você mande nos seus parentes,
e que os descendentes da sua mãe
o tratem com respeito.
Malditos sejam aqueles
que o amaldiçoarem,
e que sejam abençoados
os que o abençoarem!”
Esaú pede a bênção do pai
30 Isaque acabou de dar a bênção, e Jacó ia saindo, quando Esaú chegou, vindo da caçada. 31 Ele também fez uma comida gostosa e levou para o pai. Aí disse:
— Levante-se, por favor, coma da caça que eu matei e depois me abençoe.
32 Então Isaque perguntou:
— Quem é você?
— Eu sou Esaú, o seu filho mais velho.
33 Isaque ficou agitado e começou a tremer muito. E disse:
— Então quem foi que caçou um animal e trouxe para mim? Eu comi antes que você chegasse e dei àquele homem a minha bênção. Ele é quem será abençoado.
34 Quando Esaú ouviu isso, deu um grito cheio de amargura e disse:
— Meu pai, dê a sua bênção para mim também!
35 Porém Isaque respondeu:
— O seu irmão veio, me enganou e ficou com a bênção que era sua.
36 Esaú disse:
— Esta é a segunda vez que ele me engana. Foi com razão que puseram nele o nome de Jacó. Primeiro ele me tirou os direitos de filho mais velho e agora tirou a bênção que era minha. Pai, será que o senhor não guardou nenhuma bênção para mim?
37 Isaque respondeu:
— Eu já dei a Jacó autoridade sobre você e fiz com que todos os parentes de Jacó sejam escravos dele. Também disse que ele terá muito trigo e muito vinho. Agora não posso fazer nada por você, meu filho.
38 Porém Esaú insistiu:
— Será que o senhor tem só uma bênção? Abençoe também a mim, meu pai.
E começou a chorar alto.
39 Então Isaque disse:
“Você viverá longe de terras boas
e longe do orvalho que cai do céu.
40 Você viverá pela sua espada
e será empregado do seu irmão.
Porém, quando você se revoltar,
se livrará dele.”
Jacó vai para a Mesopotâmia
41 Esaú ficou com ódio de Jacó porque o seu pai tinha dado a ele a bênção. Então pensou assim: “O meu pai vai morrer logo. Quando acabarem os dias de luto, vou matar o meu irmão.”
42 Rebeca ficou sabendo do plano de Esaú e mandou chamar Jacó. Ela disse:
— Escute aqui! O seu irmão Esaú está planejando se vingar de você; ele quer matá-lo. 43 Por isso, meu filho, preste atenção. Vá agora mesmo para a casa de Labão, o meu irmão, que mora em Harã. 44 Fique algum tempo lá com ele, até que passe o ódio do seu irmão, 45 e ele esqueça aquilo que você lhe fez. Nessa ocasião eu mandarei alguém para trazer você de volta. Não quero perder os meus dois filhos num dia só!
46 Depois Rebeca foi falar com Isaque e disse:
— Estou aborrecida da vida por causa dessas mulheres heteias com quem Esaú casou. Se Jacó também casar com uma dessas heteias, será melhor que eu morra.

27 And when Isaac was old and his eyes were dim (so that he could not see), he called Esau, his eldest son, and said to him, “My son.” And he answered him, “I am here.”
2 Then he said, “Behold, I am now old and do not know the day of my death.
3 “Therefore, now, please take your instruments — your quiver and your bow — and get to the field, so that you may hunt food.
4 “Then make me savory meat (such as I love) and bring it to me so that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”
5 Now, Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau, his son. And Esau went into the field to hunt for food, and to bring it.
6 Then, Rebekah spoke to Jacob, her son, saying, “Behold, I have heard your father talking with Esau, your brother, saying,
7 “‘Bring me food, and make me savory meat, so that I may eat and bless you before the LORD before my death.’
8 “Now, therefore, my son, hear my voice in that which I command you.
9 “Get to the flock now and bring me two good kids from the goats there, so that I may make pleasant meat from them for your father (such as he loves).
10 “Then you shall bring it to your father; and he shall eat, to the intent that he may bless you before his death.”
11 But Jacob said to Rebekah, his mother, “Behold, Esau, my brother, is rough; and I am smooth.
12 “My father may possibly feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver. So shall I bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.”
13 But his mother said to him, “May your curse be upon me, my son. Only hear my voice; and go and bring them to me.”
14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother. And his mother made pleasant meat, such as his father loved.
15 And Rebekah took fair clothes of her elder son, Esau, which were in her house, and clothed Jacob, her younger son.
16 And she covered his hands and the smooth of his neck with the skins of the kids of the goats.
17 Afterward, she put the pleasant meat and bread which she had prepared in the hand of her son, Jacob.
18 And when he came to his father, he said, “My father.” Who answered, “I am here. Who are you, my son?”
19 And Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you bid me. Please rise. Sit up and eat my food, so that your soul may bless me.”
20 Then Isaac said to his son, “How have you found it so quickly, my son?” Who said, “Because the LORD your God brought it to my hand.”
21 Again, Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near now, so that I may feel you, my son, whether you are my son, Esau, or not.”
22 Then Jacob came near to Isaac, his father. And he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
23 (For he did not know him because his hands were rough, as his brother Esau’s hands. Therefore, he blessed him.)
24 Again he said, “Are you my son, Esau?” Who answered, “Yes.”
25 Then he said, “Bring it here to me and I will eat of my son’s food, so that my soul may bless you.” And he brought it to him; and he ate. Also, he brought him wine; and he drank.
26 Afterward, his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.”
27 And he came near and kissed him. Then he smelled the savor of his garments and blessed him, and said, “Behold, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD has blessed.
28 “Therefore, God give you of the dew of Heaven, and the fatness of the Earth, and plenty of wheat and wine.
29 “Let people be your servants and nations bow down to you. Be Lord over your brothers and let your mother’s children honor you. Cursed be he who curses you; and blessed be he who blesses you.”
30 And when Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob and Jacob had barely gone out from the presence of Isaac, his father, then Esau, his brother, came from his hunting.
31 And he also prepared savory meat and brought it to his father, and said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s food, so that your soul may bless me.”
32 But his father, Isaac, said to him, “Who are you?” And he answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33 Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who and where is he who hunted food and brought it to me; and I have eaten of all before you came? And I have blessed him; therefore, he shall be blessed.”
34 When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with a great cry and bitter, out of measure, and said to his father, “Bless me, me also, my father.”
35 Who answered, “Your brother came with subtlety and has taken away your blessing.”
36 Then he said, “Was he not justly called “Jacob”? For he has deceived me these two times. He took my birthright; and lo, now has he taken my blessing.” Also, he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
37 Then Isaac answered, and said to Esau, “Behold, I have made him your lord; and I have made all his brothers his servants. And I have furnished him with wheat and wine. And what now shall I do for you, my son?”
38 Then Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me; me, also, my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.
39 Then Isaac, his father, answered, and said to him, “Behold, the fatness of the Earth shall be your dwelling place, and you shall have of the dew of Heaven from above.
40 “And by your word you shall live and shall be your brother’s servant. But it shall come to pass, when you shall get restless, that you shall break his yoke from your neck.”
41 Therefore Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. And Esau thought in his mind, “The days of mourning for my father will come shortly. Then I will kill my brother, Jacob.”
42 And the words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah. And she sent and called Jacob, her younger son, and said to him, “Behold, your brother, Esau, is comforting himself by plotting to kill you.
43 “Now therefore my son, hear my voice. Arise and flee to Haran, to my brother Laban,
44 “and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fierceness is assuaged,
45 “and until your brother’s wrath turns away from you and he forget the things which you have done to him. Then I will send and take you from there. Why should I be deprived of you both in one day?”
46 Also, Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth like these of the daughters of the land, what good will my life be?”

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(A) he called for Esau his older son(B) and said to him, “My son.”
“Here I am,” he answered.
2 Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(C) 3 Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(D) to hunt some wild game for me. 4 Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(E) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(F) before I die.”(G)
5 Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(H) to hunt game and bring it back, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(I) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(J) 8 Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(K) 9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(L) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(M) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(N) before he dies.”
11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(O) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(P) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(Q) on myself rather than a blessing.”
13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(R) Just do what I say;(S) go and get them for me.”
14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(T) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(U) of Esau her older son,(V) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(W) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.
18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”
“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(X)
19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(Y) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(Z) so that you may give me your blessing.”(AA)
20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”
“The Lord your God gave me success,(AB)” he replied.
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(AC) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”
22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(AD) who touched(AE) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(AF) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.
“I am,” he replied.
25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(AG)
Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”
27 So he went to him and kissed(AH) him(AI). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(AJ) he blessed him and said,
“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
that the Lord has blessed.(AK)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(AL)
and earth’s richness(AM)—
an abundance of grain(AN) and new wine.(AO)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(AP)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(AQ)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(AR)”
30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(AS)
32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(AT)
“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(AU)”
33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(AV) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(AW)”
34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(AX) and said to his father, “Bless(AY) me—me too, my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(AZ) and took your blessing.”(BA)
36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[a]?(BB) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(BC) me: He took my birthright,(BD) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(BE) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”
37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(BF) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”
38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(BG)
39 His father Isaac answered him,(BH)
“Your dwelling will be
away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(BI) of heaven above.(BJ)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(BK) your brother.(BL)
But when you grow restless,
you will throw his yoke
from off your neck.(BM)”
41 Esau held a grudge(BN) against Jacob(BO) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(BP) for my father are near; then I will kill(BQ) my brother Jacob.”(BR)
42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(BS) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(BT) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(BU) Flee at once to my brother Laban(BV) in Harran.(BW) 44 Stay with him for a while(BX) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(BY) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(BZ) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(CA) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(CB) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(CC)
