Isaque vai a Gerar por causa da fome
26 E havia fome na terra, além da primeira fome, que foi nos dias de Abraão; por isso, foi-se Isaque a Abimeleque, rei dos filisteus, em Gerar. 2 E apareceu-lhe o Senhor e disse: Não desças ao Egito. Habita na terra que eu te disser; 3 peregrina nesta terra, e serei contigo e te abençoarei; porque a ti e à tua semente darei todas estas terras e confirmarei o juramento que tenho jurado a Abraão, teu pai. 4 E multiplicarei a tua semente como as estrelas dos céus e darei à tua semente todas estas terras. E em tua semente serão benditas todas as nações da terra, 5 porquanto Abraão obedeceu à minha voz e guardou o meu mandado, os meus preceitos, os meus estatutos e as minhas leis. 6 Assim, habitou Isaque em Gerar. 7 E, perguntando-lhe os varões daquele lugar acerca de sua mulher, disse: É minha irmã; porque temia dizer: É minha mulher; para que porventura (dizia ele) me não matem os varões daquele lugar por amor de Rebeca; porque era formosa à vista.
8 E aconteceu que, como ele esteve ali muito tempo, Abimeleque, rei dos filisteus, olhou por uma janela e viu, e eis que Isaque estava brincando com Rebeca, sua mulher. 9 Então, chamou Abimeleque a Isaque e disse: Eis que, na verdade, é tua mulher; como, pois, disseste: É minha irmã? E disse-lhe Isaque: Porque eu dizia: Para que eu porventura não morra por causa dela. 10 E disse Abimeleque: Que é isto que nos fizeste? Facilmente se teria deitado alguém deste povo com a tua mulher, e tu terias trazido sobre nós um delito. 11 E mandou Abimeleque a todo o povo, dizendo: Qualquer que tocar neste varão ou em sua mulher certamente morrerá.
12 E semeou Isaque naquela mesma terra e colheu, naquele mesmo ano, cem medidas, porque o Senhor o abençoava. 13 E engrandeceu-se o varão e ia-se engrandecendo, até que se tornou mui grande; 14 e tinha possessão de ovelhas, e possessão de vacas, e muita gente de serviço, de maneira que os filisteus o invejavam. 15 E todos os poços que os servos de seu pai tinham cavado nos dias de Abraão, seu pai, os filisteus entulharam e encheram de terra. 16 Disse também Abimeleque a Isaque: Aparta-te de nós, porque muito mais poderoso te tens feito do que nós.
17 Então, Isaque foi-se dali, e fez o seu assento no vale de Gerar, e habitou lá. 18 E tornou Isaque, e cavou os poços de água que cavaram nos dias de Abraão, seu pai, e que os filisteus taparam depois da morte de Abraão, e chamou-os pelos nomes que os chamara seu pai. 19 Cavaram, pois, os servos de Isaque naquele vale e acharam ali um poço de águas vivas. 20 E os pastores de Gerar porfiaram com os pastores de Isaque, dizendo: Esta água é nossa. Por isso, chamou o nome daquele poço Eseque, porque contenderam com ele. 21 Então, cavaram outro poço e também porfiaram sobre ele. Por isso, chamou o seu nome Sitna. 22 E partiu dali e cavou outro poço; e não porfiaram sobre ele. Por isso, chamou o seu nome Reobote e disse: Porque agora nos alargou o Senhor, e crescemos nesta terra. 23 Depois, subiu dali a Berseba, 24 e apareceu-lhe o Senhor naquela mesma noite e disse: Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, teu pai. Não temas, porque eu sou contigo, e abençoar-te-ei, e multiplicarei a tua semente por amor de Abraão, meu servo. 25 Então, edificou ali um altar, e invocou o nome do Senhor, e armou ali a sua tenda; e os servos de Isaque cavaram ali um poço.
Abimeleque faz um pacto com Isaque
26 E Abimeleque veio a ele de Gerar, com Ausate, seu amigo, e Ficol, príncipe do seu exército. 27 E disse-lhe Isaque: Por que viestes a mim, pois que vós me aborreceis e me enviastes de vós? 28 E eles disseram: Havemos visto, na verdade, que o Senhor é contigo; pelo que dissemos: Haja, agora, juramento entre nós, entre nós e ti; e façamos concerto contigo. 29 Que nos não faças mal, como nós te não temos tocado, e como te fizemos somente bem, e te deixamos ir em paz. Agora, tu és o bendito do Senhor. 30 Então, lhes fez um banquete, e comeram e beberam. 31 E levantaram-se de madrugada e juraram um ao outro; depois, os despediu Isaque, e despediram-se dele, em paz. 32 E aconteceu, naquele mesmo dia, que vieram os servos de Isaque, e anunciaram-lhe acerca do negócio do poço, que tinham cavado, e disseram-lhe: Temos achado água. 33 E chamou-o Seba. Por isso, é o nome daquela cidade Berseba até o dia de hoje.
34 Ora, sendo Esaú da idade de quarenta anos, tomou por mulher a Judite, filha de Beeri, heteu, e a Basemate, filha de Elom, heteu. 35 E estas foram para Isaque e Rebeca uma amargura de espírito.

Isaque mente para Abimeleque
26 Houve muita fome naquela região, como tinha acontecido no tempo de Abraão. Por isso Isaque foi para Gerar, onde vivia Abimeleque, rei dos filisteus. 2 Ali o SENHOR apareceu a Isaque e lhe disse:
—Não vá para o Egito, mas fique na terra que eu vou dizer para você ir. 3 Por enquanto permaneça nesta terra como imigrante. Eu irei ajudar e abençoar você. Vou dar todas estas terras a você e aos seus descendentes. Assim vou cumprir a aliança que fiz com Abraão, o seu pai. 4 Os seus filhos serão tão numerosos, como as estrelas do céu. A eles darei estas terras, e todas as nações do mundo serão abençoadas através da sua descendência. 5 Faço isto porque o seu pai Abraão me obedeceu e fez tudo o que eu lhe ordenei. Abraão obedeceu às minhas ordens, mandamentos, regras e leis.
6 Isaque ficou vivendo em Gerar 7 e, quando os homens desse lugar faziam perguntas a Isaque sobre a sua esposa, ele respondia:
—Ela é minha irmã.
(Ele tinha medo de dizer que ela era sua esposa porque pensava: “Se disser que é minha esposa, os homens deste lugar podem me matar para ficarem com Rebeca, porque ela é muito linda”.)
8 Isaque viveu nesse lugar durante muito tempo. Um dia Abimeleque, rei dos filisteus, estava na janela e viu Isaque acariciando a sua esposa Rebeca. 9 Então Abimeleque chamou Isaque e disse:
—Essa mulher é sua esposa! Porque é que disse que era sua irmã?
Isaque respondeu:
—Porque pensei que vocês me matariam para ficarem com ela.
10 Abimeleque disse:
—Por que você fez isso? Qualquer homem poderia ter dormido com a sua mulher, e seria culpado de nos fazer pecar.
11 Depois Abimeleque deu a seguinte ordem ao seu povo:
—Quem tocar neste homem ou na sua esposa, será morto.
Isaque fica rico
12 Isaque semeou um campo e, nesse mesmo ano, a colheita lhe rendeu cem vezes mais do que plantou. O SENHOR o abençoou 13 e ele se tornou um homem rico. A sua riqueza continuou aumentando, até ficar riquíssimo. 14 Possuía tantas ovelhas, bois e escravos que os filisteus começaram a ter inveja dele. 15 Eles taparam todos os poços que os servos de Abraão, pai de Isaque, tinham cavado naquele tempo. Os filisteus taparam esses poços enchendo-os de terra. 16 Então Abimeleque disse a Isaque:
—Saia desta terra, é poderoso demais para ficar conosco.
17 Então Isaque saiu dali e foi acampar no vale de Gerar e ficou vivendo ali. 18 Isaque reabriu todos os poços que o seu pai tinha construído quando ainda estava vivo, pois os filisteus tinham enchido os poços de terra depois de Abraão ter morrido. Aos seus poços, ele deu os mesmos nomes que o seu pai, Abraão, tinha lhes dado. 19 Os escravos de Isaque abriram outro buraco no vale e encontraram uma nascente de água fresca. 20 Mas os pastores de Gerar entraram em conflito com os pastores de Isaque. Eles diziam:
—Esta água nos pertence.
Por isso Isaque chamou aquela fonte de “Conflito”[a]. Deu-lhe esse nome porque foi nesse lugar que entraram em conflito com ele. 21 Depois os servos de Isaque abriram outro poço, mas eles também discutiram por causa dele. Por isso, Isaque lhe deu o nome de “Discussão”[b]. 22 Isaque saiu dali e voltou a abrir outro poço e desta vez ninguém discutiu com ele. Por isso, a esse poço, ele deu o nome de “Lugar Espaçoso”[c]. E disse também:
—Agora o SENHOR nos deu espaço para crescer. Aqui iremos prosperar.
23 Dali Isaque foi para Berseba. 24 Naquela noite, o SENHOR apareceu a ele e disse:
—Eu sou o Deus do seu pai Abraão. Não tenha medo porque estou com você. Por causa do meu servo Abraão, irei abençoá-lo e dar a você muitos descendentes.
25 Isaque construiu ali um altar e adorou o SENHOR. Também estabeleceu ali o seu acampamento e os seus servos abriram um poço.
26 Um dia Abimeleque chegou de Gerar para ver Isaque. Trazia com ele Auzate, o seu conselheiro, e Ficol, o chefe do seu exército.
27 Isaque lhes perguntou:
—Por que é que vieram me ver? Vocês não gostam de mim e me expulsaram das suas terras.
28 Eles responderam:
—Agora estamos convencidos de que o SENHOR está com você. Por isso queremos fazer uma aliança com você. 29 Prometa que não nos fará mal, assim como nós sempre o tratamos bem. Fizemos que você saísse das nossas terras, mas deixamos que fosse em paz. Agora sabemos que é abençoado pelo SENHOR.
30 Então Isaque fez um banquete para eles e todos comeram e beberam. 31 Na manhã seguinte se levantaram cedo e fizeram promessas entre eles. Depois Isaque se despediu deles e eles partiram em paz.
32 Nesse dia, os escravos de Isaque vieram e lhe contaram que tinham construído um poço. Disseram-lhe:
—Encontramos água!
33 Isaque chamou esse poço de Seba[d] e, por isso, essa cidade ainda se chama Berseba[e].
34 Quando Esaú tinha quarenta anos de idade, casou-se com duas mulheres. Uma era Judite, filha do heteu Beeri, e a outra era Basemate, filha do heteu Elom. 35 Essas mulheres amarguraram a vida de Isaque e Rebeca.

Isaac and Abimelek(A)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) 2 The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) 4 I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)
25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)
30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
24 And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
