Deus prova a fé de Abraão
22 Algum tempo depois Deus pôs à prova a fé de Abraão, chamando-o:
—Abraão!
E ele respondeu:
—Estou aqui!
2 E Deus lhe disse:
—Leve com você o seu filho, o seu único filho, o seu filho amado, Isaque, e vá para a região de Moriá. Quando chegar lá, ofereça-o como sacrifício queimado num dos montes que eu lhe indicar.
3 Na manhã seguinte Abraão levantou-se cedo e preparou o seu jumento. Depois de cortar a lenha para o sacrifício, partiu para o lugar que Deus tinha lhe indicado, levando com ele dois dos seus servos e Isaque. 4 No terceiro dia, Abraão viu de longe o lugar para onde iam. 5 E Abraão disse aos seus servos:
—Fiquem aqui com o jumento. Eu e o meu filho vamos um pouco mais adiante para adorar a Deus. Depois disso, voltaremos aqui.
6 Abraão então pegou na lenha que tinha para o sacrifício e a colocou nos ombros do seu filho Isaque. Ele mesmo levava o fogo e a faca, e os dois foram caminhando juntos. 7 Enquanto caminhavam, Isaque disse ao seu pai Abraão:
—Pai!
Abraão respondeu:
—Sim, meu filho.
Isaque perguntou:
—Temos aqui a lenha e o fogo, mas onde está o cordeiro que vamos sacrificar?
8 Abraão respondeu:
—É o próprio Deus quem vai nos dar o cordeiro para o sacrifício, meu filho.
Então os dois continuaram no seu caminho. 9 Quando chegaram ao lugar que Deus tinha indicado, Abraão fez um altar e colocou a lenha sobre ele. Depois amarrou o seu filho e o colocou em cima da lenha do altar. 10 Então Abraão estendeu a mão e agarrou a faca para matar o seu filho. 11 Mas o anjo do SENHOR o chamou do céu:
—Abraão! Abraão!
E Abraão respondeu:
—Estou aqui.
12 E o anjo disse:
—Não levante a mão contra o seu filho, não lhe faça mal. Agora eu sei que você honra a Deus,[a] pois não poupou o seu filho, o seu único filho.
13 Abraão levantou os olhos e viu um carneiro preso pelos chifres num arbusto. Então foi apanhá-lo e ofereceu-o em sacrifício, no lugar do seu filho. 14 Abraão chamou a esse lugar: “O SENHOR é quem vai providenciar”. Por isso, ainda hoje se diz: “No monte o SENHOR vai providenciar”.
15 Pela segunda vez o anjo do SENHOR chamou do céu a Abraão 16 e disse:
—Eu, o SENHOR, juro por mim mesmo que por você ter feito isto, não me negando o seu filho, o seu único filho, 17 eu certamente abençoarei você e lhe darei muitos descendentes. Os seus descendentes serão tantos como as estrelas do céu e como a areia da praia do mar. Eles irão possuir as cidades dos seus inimigos. 18 Também juro que todas as nações do mundo serão abençoadas através da sua descendência, porque você me obedeceu.
19 Abraão voltou ao lugar onde estavam os seus servos e juntos partiram para Berseba, onde Abraão ficou vivendo.
20 Algum tempo depois, alguém disse a Abraão:
—Milca também deu filhos ao seu irmão Naor: 21 Uz é o mais velho, Buz é o seu irmão. Depois ainda há: Quemuel (o pai de Aram), 22 Quésede, Hazo, Pildas, Jidlaf e Betuel. 23 Betuel foi pai de Rebeca. Milca teve esses oito filhos de Naor, o irmão de Abraão. 24 Naor também teve outros filhos pela sua outra esposa[b] Reumá: Tebá, Gaã, Taás e Maaca.

22 Enige tijd later stelde God Abraham op de proef. ‘Abraham!’ zei God. ‘Ja Here, hier ben ik,’ antwoordde Abraham. 2 ‘Neem uw zoon, uw enige, van wie u zoveel houdt, Isaak, ga naar het land Moria en offer hem daar als een brandoffer aan Mij. De plaats waar u dat moet doen, zal Ik u wijzen.’
3 De volgende morgen stond Abraham vroeg op, zadelde zijn ezel, nam twee knechten mee en zijn zoon Isaak. Hij hakte hout voor het offer en ging op weg naar de plaats die God had genoemd. 4 Na drie dagen reizen zag Abraham in de verte de plaats die God hem had gezegd. 5 ‘Jullie blijven hier bij de ezel,’ beval hij de twee dienaren, ‘ik en de jongen gaan daarheen om te aanbidden. Daarna komen wij hier terug.’ 6 Abraham liet Isaak het hout voor het offervuur dragen en nam zelf het mes en het vuur. Zo liepen zij samen verder.
7 ‘Vader,’ zei Isaak. ‘Wat is er, mijn jongen?’ vroeg Abraham. ‘We hebben hout en het vuur,’ zei Isaak, ‘maar waar is het lam dat wij moeten offeren?’ 8 ‘God zal Zelf voor een offerlam zorgen, jongen,’ antwoordde Abraham. En weer gingen zij samen verder. 9 Toen zij aankwamen op de plaats die God Abraham had aangewezen, bouwde Abraham een altaar en stapelde het hout erop. Toen bond hij Isaak vast en legde hem op het altaar, op het hout. 10 Hij pakte het mes en hief zijn arm op om zijn zoon te doden. 11 Op dat moment riep de Engel van de Here uit de hemel: ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ ‘Ik luister,’ antwoordde Abraham. 12 ‘Leg het mes weg en laat de jongen ongemoeid,’ zei de Engel. ‘Ik weet nu dat God de belangrijkste is in uw leven. Zelfs uw eigen zoon, uw enige, van wie u zoveel houdt, wilde u Mij geven.’
13 Abraham keek rond en zag vlakbij een ram, die met zijn horens in de struiken vastzat. In plaats van zijn zoon offerde hij die ram als een brandoffer op het altaar. 14 Abraham noemde die plaats ‘De Here voorziet erin.’ Daarom wordt ook nu nog gezegd: ‘Op de berg van de Here zal Hij voorzien.’
15 Toen sprak de Engel van de Here opnieuw tegen Abraham vanuit de hemel. 16,17 ‘Ik, de Here, heb Mijzelf gezworen dat Ik u en uw nageslacht rijk zal zegenen, omdat u Mij hebt gehoorzaamd en Mij zelfs uw enige zoon wilde geven. Uw nakomelingen zullen net zo talrijk zijn als de sterren aan de hemel en het zand langs de zee. 18 Zij zullen hun vijanden overwinnen en een zegen zijn voor alle volken van de wereld en dat alles, omdat u Mij hebt gehoorzaamd.’ 19 Abraham keerde terug naar zijn twee dienaren en samen gingen ze terug naar Berseba, hun woonplaats.
20 Enige tijd later kreeg Abraham bericht dat Milka, de vrouw van zijn broer Nachor, haar man acht zonen had gegeven. Us, de oudste, Buz, de op een na oudste, Kemuël (de vader van Aram), Kesed, Chazo, 21-24 Pildas, Jidlaf en Betuël (de vader van Rebekka). Nachor kreeg ook nog vier zonen van zijn bijvrouw Reüma: Tebach, Gacham, Tachas en Maächa.

Abraham Tested
22 Some time later God tested(A) Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am,”(B) he replied.
2 Then God said, “Take your son(C), your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah.(D) Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering(E) on a mountain I will show you.(F)”
3 Early the next morning(G) Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.(H)”
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac,(I) and he himself carried the fire and the knife.(J) As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb(K) for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide(L) the lamb(M) for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
9 When they reached the place God had told him about,(N) Abraham built an altar(O) there and arranged the wood(P) on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar,(Q) on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife(R) to slay his son.(S) 11 But the angel of the Lord(T) called out to him from heaven,(U) “Abraham! Abraham!”(V)
“Here I am,”(W) he replied.
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,(X) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.(Y)”
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns.(Z) He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.(AA) 14 So Abraham called(AB) that place The Lord(AC) Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.(AD)”
15 The angel of the Lord(AE) called to Abraham from heaven(AF) a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself,(AG) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,(AH) 17 I will surely bless you(AI) and make your descendants(AJ) as numerous as the stars in the sky(AK) and as the sand on the seashore.(AL) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,(AM) 18 and through your offspring[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,[c](AN) because you have obeyed me.”(AO)
19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba.(AP) And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s Sons
20 Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:(AQ) 21 Uz(AR) the firstborn, Buz(AS) his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.(AT)” 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.(AU) Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AV) 24 His concubine,(AW) whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
