A torre de Babel
11 Naquele tempo toda a humanidade falava uma só língua. 2 Deslocando-se e espalhando-se em direção ao oriente, os homens descobriram uma planície na terra de Sinar e depressa a povoaram. 3 E começaram a falar em construir uma grande cidade, para o que fizeram tijolos de terra bem cozida, para servir de pedra de construção e usaram alcatrão em vez de argamassa. 4 Depois eles disseram: “Vamos construir uma cidade com uma torre altíssima, que chegue até aos céus; dessa forma, o nosso nome será honrado por todos e jamais seremos dispersos pela face da Terra!”
5 O Senhor desceu para ver a cidade e a torre que estavam a levantar. 6 “Vejamos se isto é o que eles já são capazes de fazer; sendo um só povo, com uma só língua, não haverá limites para tudo o que ousarem fazer. 7 Vamos descer e fazer com que a língua deles comece a diferenciar-se, de forma que uns não entendam os outros.”
8 E foi dessa forma que o Senhor os espalhou sobre toda a face da Terra, tendo cessado a construção daquela cidade. 9 Por isso, ficou a chamar-se Babel,[a] porque foi ali que o Senhor confundiu a língua dos homens e espalhou-os por toda a Terra.
Desde Sem a Abrão
(1 Cr 1.24-27)
10 A linha de descendentes de Sem incluía Arfaxade, nascido dois anos após o dilúvio, quando Sem tinha 100 anos de idade. 11 E depois ainda viveu mais 500 anos e teve muitos filhos e filhas.
12 Arfaxade tinha 35 anos, quando lhe nasceu Sala. 13 Viveu ainda 403 anos e teve muitos filhos e filhas.
14 Sala tinha 30 anos, quando Eber nasceu. 15 E viveu depois 403 anos, tendo tido muitos filhos e filhas.
16 Aos 34 anos Eber teve Pelegue. 17 Viveu mais 430 anos com muitos filhos e filhas.
18 Pelegue contava 30 anos, ao nascer-lhe Reu. 19 Viveu ainda 209 anos com muitos filhos e filhas.
20 Reu, aos 32 anos, teve Serugue. 21 Viveu depois disso 207 anos, tendo tido muitos filhos e filhas.
22 Serugue, quando contava 30 anos, teve Naor. 23 Viveu, com muitos filhos e filhas, 200 anos depois disso.
24 Com 29 anos Naor foi pai de Tera. 25 Depois viveu ainda 119 anos, tendo tido muitos filhos e filhas.
26 Tera, aos 70 anos, tinha três filhos: Abrão, Naor e Harã.
27 Esta é a lista de descendentes de Tera.
Tera foi pai de Abrão, Naor e Harã. Harã tinha, por sua vez, um filho chamado Lot. 28 Harã morreu ainda novo, na terra onde tinha nascido, em Ur da Caldeia, e o seu pai Tera ainda era vivo. 29 Entretanto, Abrão casou com Sarai, enquanto Naor casou-se com Milca, que era filha de Harã e irmã de Isca. 30 Mas Sarai era estéril, não tinha filhos.
31 Então Tera pegou em Abrão, seu filho, e em Lot, seu neto, mais a sua nora Sarai e deixou Ur da Caldeia, para ir para a terra de Canaã. Contudo, ficaram-se pela cidade de Harã e estabeleceram-se ali, 32 até que Tera morreu aos 205 anos.

A dispersão dos povos
11 Naquele tempo, todas as pessoas falavam uma só língua. 2 Mas as pessoas foram em direção ao Oriente.[a] Quando elas chegaram numa planície na Suméria, 3 disseram umas às outras:
—Vamos fazer tijolos e queimá-los no fogo para ficarem duros.
E começaram a utilizar tijolos em vez de pedras e betume em vez de argamassa. 4 Depois disseram:
—Vamos construir uma cidade, com um templo e uma torre[b] que chegue até o céu. Dessa maneira seremos famosos e não seremos espalhados pelo mundo inteiro.
5 O SENHOR desceu para ver a cidade e a torre que os seres humanos estavam construindo 6 e o SENHOR disse:
—Eles são um só povo, todos falam a mesma língua, e isto é só o princípio do que podem fazer. Logo eles serão capazes de fazer tudo o que quiserem. 7 Portanto, vamos descer e confundir a sua língua para que um não entenda o que o outro fala.
8 Assim o SENHOR dispersou as pessoas por toda a terra e elas pararam de construir a cidade. 9 Por isso, a cidade foi chamada Babel[c], porque foi ali que o SENHOR confundiu a língua das pessoas e foi dali que o SENHOR dispersou as pessoas pelo mundo inteiro.
A família de Sem
10 Esta é a história da família de Sem:
Depois do dilúvio, quando Sem tinha 100 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Arfaxade. 11 Depois do nascimento de Arfaxade, Sem viveu mais 500 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
12 Quando Arfaxade tinha 35 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Salá. 13 Depois do nascimento de Salá, Arfaxade viveu mais 403 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
14 Quando Salá tinha 30 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Héber. 15 Depois do nascimento de Héber, Salá viveu mais 403 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
16 Quando Héber tinha 34 anos, nasceu o seu filho Pelegue. 17 Depois do nascimento de Pelegue, Héber viveu mais 430 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
18 Quando Pelegue tinha 30 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Reú. 19 Depois do nascimento de Reú, Pelegue viveu mais 209 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
20 Quando Reú tinha 32 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Serugue. 21 Depois do nascimento de Serugue, Reú viveu mais 207 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
22 Quando Serugue tinha 30 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Naor. 23 Depois do nascimento de Naor, Serugue viveu mais 200 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
24 Quando Naor tinha 29 anos de idade, nasceu o seu filho Tera. 25 Depois do nascimento de Tera, Naor viveu mais 119 anos, e durante esse tempo teve mais filhos e filhas.
26 Depois de ter 70 anos de idade, Tera teve os seus três filhos: Abrão, Naor e Harã.
A família de Tera
27 Esta é a história da família de Tera, o pai de Abrão, de Naor e de Harã:
Harã foi o pai de Ló. 28 Harã morreu em Ur, na cidade onde também tinha nascido, na terra onde viviam os caldeus. Quando ele morreu, o seu pai ainda vivia. 29 Abrão e Naor casaram-se. Abrão casou-se com Sarai, e Naor casou-se com Milca. Harã era o pai de Milca e de Iscá. 30 Sarai não podia ter filhos porque era estéril.
31 Tera tomou o seu filho Abrão, o seu neto Ló, que era filho de Harã, e a sua nora Sarai, esposa do seu filho Abrão, para saírem juntos de Ur e irem viver em Canaã. Mas, quando chegaram numa cidade chamada Harã, ficaram vivendo lá. 32 Tera viveu 205 anos e morreu em Harã.

- 11.2 Oriente Geralmente se refere à área entre os rios Tigre e Eufrates, perto do Golfo da Pérsia.
- 11.4 uma cidade (…) uma torre Literalmente, “uma cidade com uma torre”. A “torre” se refere aos altos templos (zigurates) que eram feitos naquele tempo para mostrar o poder do homem e facilitar a adoração dos deuses.
- 11.9 Babel Ou “Babilônia”. Em hebraico esta palavra é semelhante à palavra “confusão”. Mas a palavra significava no início “Porta do Deus”.

Toda a terra com uma mesma língua
11 E era toda a terra de uma mesma língua e de uma mesma fala. 2 E aconteceu que, partindo eles do Oriente, acharam um vale na terra de Sinar; e habitaram ali. 3 E disseram uns aos outros: Eia, façamos tijolos e queimemo-los bem. E foi-lhes o tijolo por pedra, e o betume, por cal. 4 E disseram: Eia, edifiquemos nós uma cidade e uma torre cujo cume toque nos céus e façamo-nos um nome, para que não sejamos espalhados sobre a face de toda a terra. 5 Então, desceu o Senhor para ver a cidade e a torre que os filhos dos homens edificavam; 6 e o Senhor disse: Eis que o povo é um, e todos têm uma mesma língua; e isto é o que começam a fazer; e, agora, não haverá restrição para tudo o que eles intentarem fazer.
A confusão das línguas
7 Eia, desçamos e confundamos ali a sua língua, para que não entenda um a língua do outro. 8 Assim, o Senhor os espalhou dali sobre a face de toda a terra; e cessaram de edificar a cidade. 9 Por isso, se chamou o seu nome Babel, porquanto ali confundiu o Senhor a língua de toda a terra e dali os espalhou o Senhor sobre a face de toda a terra.
10 Estas são as gerações de Sem: Sem era da idade de cem anos e gerou a Arfaxade, dois anos depois do dilúvio. 11 E viveu Sem, depois que gerou a Arfaxade, quinhentos anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
12 E viveu Arfaxade trinta e cinco anos e gerou a Salá. 13 E viveu Arfaxade, depois que gerou a Salá, quatrocentos e três anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
14 E viveu Salá trinta anos e gerou a Éber. 15 E viveu Salá, depois que gerou a Éber, quatrocentos e três anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
16 E viveu Éber trinta e quatro anos e gerou a Pelegue. 17 E viveu Éber, depois que gerou a Pelegue, quatrocentos e trinta anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
18 E viveu Pelegue trinta anos e gerou a Reú. 19 E viveu Pelegue, depois que gerou a Reú, duzentos e nove anos; e gerou filhos e filhas. 20 E viveu Reú trinta e dois anos e gerou a Serugue. 21 E viveu Reú, depois que gerou a Serugue, duzentos e sete anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
22 E viveu Serugue trinta anos e gerou a Naor. 23 E viveu Serugue, depois que gerou a Naor, duzentos anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
24 E viveu Naor vinte e nove anos e gerou a Tera. 25 E viveu Naor, depois que gerou a Tera, cento e dezenove anos; e gerou filhos e filhas.
26 E viveu Tera setenta anos e gerou a Abrão, a Naor e a Harã. 27 E estas são as gerações de Tera: Tera gerou a Abrão, a Naor e a Harã; e Harã gerou a Ló. 28 E morreu Harã, estando seu pai Tera ainda vivo, na terra do seu nascimento, em Ur dos caldeus. 29 E tomaram Abrão e Naor mulheres para si; o nome da mulher de Abrão era Sarai, e o nome da mulher de Naor era Milca, filha de Harã, pai de Milca e pai de Iscá. 30 E Sarai foi estéril e não tinha filhos.
31 E tomou Tera a Abrão, seu filho, e a Ló, filho de Harã, filho de seu filho, e a Sarai, sua nora, mulher de seu filho Abrão, e saiu com eles de Ur dos caldeus, para ir à terra de Canaã; e vieram até Harã e habitaram ali. 32 E foram os dias de Tera duzentos e cinco anos; e morreu Tera em Harã.

The Tower of Babel
11 Now the whole world had one language(A) and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b](B) and settled there.
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks(C) and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone,(D) and tar(E) for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,(F) so that we may make a name(G) for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered(H) over the face of the whole earth.”(I)
5 But the Lord came down(J) to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language(K) they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us(L) go down(M) and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”(N)
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,(O) and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[c](P)—because there the Lord confused the language(Q) of the whole world.(R) From there the Lord scattered(S) them over the face of the whole earth.
From Shem to Abram(T)
10 This is the account(U) of Shem’s family line.
Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father[d] of Arphaxad.(V) 11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.(W) 13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.[e]
14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.(X) 15 And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.(Y) 17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
18 When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.(Z) 19 And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
20 When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.(AA) 21 And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
22 When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.(AB) 23 And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.(AC) 25 And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
26 After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram,(AD) Nahor(AE) and Haran.(AF)
Abram’s Family
27 This is the account(AG) of Terah’s family line.
Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor(AH) and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.(AI) 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans,(AJ) in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor(AK) both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai,(AL) and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah;(AM) she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. 30 Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.(AN)
31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot(AO) son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law(AP) Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans(AQ) to go to Canaan.(AR) But when they came to Harran,(AS) they settled there.
32 Terah(AT) lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.

3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:

27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
