Jacob bendice a los hijos de José

48 Y después de estas cosas, le dijeron a José[a]: «Su padre está enfermo». Y él tomó consigo a sus dos hijos, Manasés y Efraín(A). 2 Cuando se le avisó a Jacob: «Su hijo José ha venido a usted»; entonces Israel hizo un esfuerzo[b] y se sentó en la cama.

3 Y Jacob dijo a José: «El Dios Todopoderoso[c](B) se me apareció en Luz(C), en la tierra de Canaán. Me bendijo, 4 y me dijo: “Yo te haré fecundo y te multiplicaré. Y haré de ti multitud de pueblos y daré esta tierra a tu descendencia[d] después de ti en posesión perpetua(D)”.

5 »Ahora pues, tus dos hijos que te nacieron en la tierra de Egipto, antes de que yo viniera a ti a Egipto, míos son. Efraín y Manasés(E) serán míos, como lo son Rubén(F) y Simeón. 6 Pero los hijos[e] que has tenido después de ellos, serán tuyos. Serán llamados por el nombre de sus hermanos en su heredad. 7 En cuanto a mí, cuando vine de Padán(G), Raquel se me murió[f] en la tierra de Canaán, en el camino, cuando faltaba todavía cierta distancia para llegar a Efrata, y la sepulté allí en el camino a Efrata, esto es Belén(H)».

8 Cuando Israel vio a los hijos de José(I), dijo: «¿Quiénes son estos?». 9 Y José respondió a su padre: «Son mis hijos, los que Dios me ha dado aquí(J)». «Acércalos a mí, te ruego, para que yo los bendiga(K)», le dijo. 10 Los ojos de Israel estaban tan débiles por la vejez que no podía ver(L). Entonces José se los acercó, y él los besó(M) y los abrazó. 11 Israel dijo a José: «Nunca esperaba[g] ver tu rostro, y mira, Dios me ha permitido ver también a tus hijos[h]».

12 Entonces José los tomó de las[i] rodillas de Jacob, y se inclinó con su rostro en tierra(N). 13 José tomó a los dos, a Efraín con la derecha, hacia la izquierda de Israel, y a Manasés con la izquierda, hacia la derecha de Israel, y se los acercó. 14 Pero Israel extendió su derecha y la puso sobre la cabeza de Efraín, que era el menor, y su izquierda sobre la cabeza de Manasés, cruzando a propósito sus manos, aunque[j] Manasés era el primogénito(O). 15 Israel bendijo a José, y dijo:

«El Dios delante de quien anduvieron mis padres Abraham e Isaac(P),
El Dios que ha sido mi pastor(Q) toda mi vida[k] hasta este día,
16 El ángel que me ha rescatado de todo mal(R),
Bendiga a estos muchachos(S);
Y viva[l] en ellos mi nombre,
Y el nombre de mis padres Abraham e Isaac;
Y crezcan para ser multitud en medio de la tierra(T)».

17 Cuando José vio que su padre había puesto su mano derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín(U), esto le desagradó. Y tomó la mano de su padre para cambiarla de la cabeza de Efraín a la cabeza de Manasés. 18 Y José dijo a su padre: «No sea así, padre mío, pues este es el primogénito. Pon tu mano derecha sobre su cabeza».

19 Pero su padre rehusó y dijo: «Lo sé, hijo mío, lo sé. Él también llegará a ser un pueblo, y él también será grande. Sin embargo, su hermano menor será más grande que él, y su descendencia[m] llegará a ser multitud[n] de naciones(V)». 20 Y los bendijo aquel día(W), diciendo:

«Por ti[o] bendecirá Israel, diciendo:
“Que Dios te haga como Efraín y Manasés”».

Así puso a Efraín antes de Manasés.

21 Entonces Israel dijo a José: «Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero Dios estará con ustedes(X) y los hará volver a la tierra de sus padres(Y). 22 Yo te doy una parte[p] más que a tus hermanos, la cual tomé de mano del amorreo(Z) con mi espada y con mi arco».

Bendición de Efraín y Manasés

48 Poco tiempo después informaron a José que su padre estaba enfermo. Entonces fue a visitarlo y llevó consigo a sus dos hijos, Manasés y Efraín. 2 Cuando avisaron a Jacob que su hijo venía a verlo, Israel hizo un esfuerzo, se sentó en la cama 3 y dijo a José:

—El Dios Todopoderoso se me apareció en Luz, en la tierra de Canaán, y me bendijo 4 con esta promesa: “Te haré fecundo, te multiplicaré, y haré que tus descendientes formen una comunidad de naciones. Además, a tu descendencia daré esta tierra como su posesión perpetua”.

5 Ahora bien, los dos hijos que te nacieron aquí en Egipto, antes de que me reuniera contigo, serán considerados míos. Efraín y Manasés serán tan míos como lo son Rubén y Simeón. 6 Los hijos que tengas después de ellos serán tuyos y a través de sus hermanos recibirán su herencia. 7 Cuando yo regresaba de Padán,[a] se me murió Raquel cerca de Efrata, en tierra de Canaán, y allí la sepulté junto al camino de Efrata, es decir, Belén.

8 Al ver a los hijos de José, Israel preguntó:

—Y estos chicos, ¿quiénes son?

9 —Son los hijos que Dios me ha concedido aquí —respondió José a su padre.

Entonces Israel dijo:

—Acércalos, por favor, para que les dé mi bendición.

10 Israel ya era muy anciano y por su avanzada edad casi no podía ver; por eso José los acercó y su padre los besó y abrazó. 11 Luego dijo a José:

—Ya había perdido la esperanza de volver a verte, ¡y ahora Dios me ha concedido ver también a tus hijos!

12 José los retiró de las rodillas de Israel y se postró rostro en tierra. 13 Luego tomó a sus dos hijos, a Efraín con la derecha y a Manasés con la izquierda, y se los presentó a su padre. De esta manera Efraín quedó a la izquierda de Israel y Manasés a su derecha. 14 Pero Israel, al extender las manos, las entrecruzó y puso su derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín, aunque era el menor, y su izquierda sobre la cabeza de Manasés, aunque era el mayor.

15 Y los bendijo con estas palabras:

«Que el Dios en cuya presencia
    caminaron mis padres, Abraham e Isaac,
el Dios que ha sido mi pastor
    desde el día en que nací hasta hoy,
16 el ángel que me ha rescatado de todo mal,
    bendiga a estos jóvenes.
Que por medio de ellos sea recordado mi nombre
    y el de mis padres, Abraham e Isaac.
Que crezcan y se multipliquen
    sobre la tierra».

17 A José no le agradó ver que su padre pusiera su mano derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín, así que tomando la mano de su padre, la pasó de la cabeza de Efraín a la de Manasés, 18 mientras reclamaba:

—¡Así no, padre mío! ¡Pon tu mano derecha sobre la cabeza de este, que es el primogénito!

19 Pero su padre se resistió y contestó:

—¡Ya lo sé, hijo, ya lo sé! También él gestará a un pueblo y llegará a ser importante. Pero su hermano menor será aún más importante y su descendencia dará origen a muchas naciones.

20 Aquel día Jacob los bendijo así:

«Esta será la bendición que en Israel se habrá de pronunciar:
    “Que Dios haga contigo como a Efraín y a Manasés”».

De este modo Israel dio a Efraín la primacía sobre Manasés.

21 Finalmente, Israel dijo a José:

—Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero Dios estará con ustedes y los hará volver a la tierra de sus antepasados. 22 Y a ti, que estás por encima de tus hermanos, te doy Siquén,[b] tierra que arrebaté a los amorreos con mi espada y con mi arco.

Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

48 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2 And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. 3 And Jacob said to Joseph, (A)“God Almighty[a] appeared to me at (B)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you (C)for an everlasting possession.’ 5 And now your (D)two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, (E)are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow (F)Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance[b] to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

8 When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 Joseph said to his father, (G)“They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that (H)I may bless them.” 10 Now (I)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, (J)and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (K)“I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.” 12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him. 14 (L)And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, (M)crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 15 And he blessed Joseph and said,

“The God (N)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
    the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
16 (O)the angel who has (P)redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys;
    and in them let (Q)my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
    and let them (R)grow into a multitude[c] in the midst of the earth.”

17 When Joseph saw that his father (S)laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, (T)“I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, (U)his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude[d] of nations.” 20 So he blessed them that day, saying,

“By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying,
(V)‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.’”

Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but (W)God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover, I have given to (X)you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope[e] that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.”

Manasseh and Ephraim

48 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim(A) along with him. 2 When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(B) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[a](C) appeared to me at Luz(D) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(E) 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(F) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(G) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(H)

5 “Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(I) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(J) just as Reuben(K) and Simeon(L) are mine. 6 Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. 7 As I was returning from Paddan,[b](M) to my sorrow(N) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(O)

8 When Israel(P) saw the sons of Joseph,(Q) he asked, “Who are these?”

9 “They are the sons God has given me here,”(R) Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless(S) them.”

10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.(T) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them(U) and embraced them.(V)

11 Israel(W) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,(X) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”(Y)

12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees(Z) and bowed down with his face to the ground.(AA) 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,(AB) and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel(AC) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,(AD) though he was the younger,(AE) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.(AF)

15 Then he blessed(AG) Joseph and said,

“May the God before whom my fathers
    Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,(AH)
the God who has been my shepherd(AI)
    all my life to this day,
16 the Angel(AJ) who has delivered me from all harm(AK)
    —may he bless(AL) these boys.(AM)
May they be called by my name
    and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,(AN)
and may they increase greatly
    on the earth.”(AO)

17 When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand(AP) on Ephraim’s head(AQ) he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”(AR)

19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great.(AS) Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he,(AT) and his descendants will become a group of nations.(AU)” 20 He blessed(AV) them that day(AW) and said,

“In your[c] name will Israel(AX) pronounce this blessing:(AY)
    ‘May God make you like Ephraim(AZ) and Manasseh.(BA)’”

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you[d](BB) and take you[e] back to the land of your[f] fathers.(BC) 22 And to you I give one more ridge of land[g](BD) than to your brothers,(BE) the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword(BF) and my bow.”
