47 José fue a dar la noticia al faraón, y le dijo:
— Mi padre y mis hermanos han venido desde Canaán con sus ovejas, sus vacas y con todo cuanto tienen; en este momento ya se encuentran en la región de Gosen.
2 José había llevado consigo a cinco de sus hermanos y se los presentó al faraón 3 que les preguntó:
— ¿A qué se dedican ustedes?
Ellos respondieron:
— Nosotros, tus siervos, somos pastores de ovejas, igual que lo fueron nuestros antepasados.
4 Y añadieron:
— Hemos venido a vivir en este país porque en Canaán aprieta el hambre y ya no hay pastos para los rebaños de tus siervos. Por eso te rogamos que permitas a tus siervos establecerse en la región de Gosen.
5 Entonces el faraón dijo a José:
— Tu padre y tus hermanos han venido a reunirse contigo. 6 El país de Egipto está a tu disposición. Haz que tu padre y tus hermanos se asienten en la mejor zona del país; que se queden en la región de Gosen. Y si sabes que entre ellos hay algunos con experiencia, ponlos a cargo de mi ganado.
7 Después José presentó a su padre Jacob al faraón. Jacob saludó al faraón con reverencia 8 y este le preguntó:
— ¿Cuántos años tienes?
9 Jacob respondió:
— Ciento treinta años llevo de aquí para allá. Pocos y desgraciados han sido los años de mi vida, y no llegan a sumar los años que mis antepasados vivieron como inmigrantes.
10 Jacob volvió a saludar al faraón, y se retiró de su presencia.
11 José instaló a su padre y a sus hermanos dándoles terrenos en la mejor región de Egipto, en el distrito de Ramsés, tal como lo había ordenado el faraón. 12 José proporcionó alimentos a su padre, a sus hermanos y a toda su familia, según las necesidades de cada uno.
La administración de José
13 En ninguna parte del país había qué comer, y la carestía era tan severa que la gente, tanto en Egipto como en Canaán, se moría de hambre. 14 José, mientras tanto, iba acumulando todo el dinero que los de Egipto y los de Canaán pagaban a cambio del grano que le compraban, e ingresaba este dinero en las arcas reales. 15 Pero cuando se agotó el dinero en Egipto y Canaán, todos los egipcios fueron a decirle a José:
— Danos pan. O ¿vas a permitir que muramos, porque ya no nos queda dinero?
16 José les respondió:
— Si ya se less acabó el dinero, traigan sus ganados y se los cambiaré por alimento.
17 Ellos traían el ganado a José que les daba alimento a cambio de caballos, ovejas, vacas y asnos. Durante un año les estuvo proveyendo de alimento a cambio de todo su ganado. 18 Pero pasó ese año, y al año siguiente fueron a decirle a José:
— Señor, no podemos ocultarte que el dinero se nos acabó y que el ganado es ya de nuestro señor. No tenemos otra cosa que ofrecer a nuestro señor que nuestros cuerpos y nuestras tierras. 19 ¿Vas a permitir que nosotros muramos y nuestras tierras queden yermas? Cómpranos a nosotros y a nuestras tierras, a cambio de alimento. Nosotros, con nuestras tierras, seremos esclavos del faraón; pero danos semilla para que la tierra no quede desolada y nosotros podamos sobrevivir.
20 De esta manera José adquirió para el faraón todas las tierras de Egipto, pues los egipcios, obligados por el hambre, tuvieron que venderle sus tierras; y así el país pasó a ser propiedad exclusiva del faraón, 21 y todos en Egipto, de uno a otro confín, acabaron siendo esclavos. 22 Los únicos terrenos que José no compró fueron los que pertenecían a los sacerdotes, porque a ellos les había asignado el faraón una ración de alimento; y como vivían de esa asignación que les daba el faraón, no tuvieron que vender sus propiedades.
23 José dijo después al pueblo:
— Hoy los he comprado a ustedes y sus tierras para el faraón. Aquí tienen semilla para que siembren las tierras; 24 pero habrán de entregar al faraón la quinta parte de la cosecha; las otras cuatro partes servirán para sembrar los campos y para alimentarse ustedes, sus familias y sus hijos.
25 Ellos respondieron:
— Señor, aceptamos ser esclavos del faraón, porque hemos contado con tu favor y nos has salvado la vida.
26 Y José promulgó una ley, vigente hasta el día de hoy en toda la tierra de Egipto, según la cual debía entregarse al faraón una quinta parte de las cosechas. Solamente las tierras de los sacerdotes no pasaron a ser propiedad del faraón.
Últimos días de Jacob
27 Los israelitas se asentaron en Egipto, en la región de Gosen. Adquirieron propiedades allí, prosperaron y llegaron a ser muy numerosos. 28 Jacob vivió diecisiete años en Egipto, y la duración total de su vida fue de ciento cuarenta y siete años.
29 Vivía ya Israel sus últimos días, cuando mandó llamar a su hijo José y le dijo:
— Si de verdad me quieres, pon tu mano debajo de mi muslo y júrame que harás lo que te voy a pedir: ¡Por favor, no me entierres en Egipto! 30 Cuando vaya a reunirme con mis antepasados, sácame de Egipto y entiérrame en su sepulcro.
José respondió:
— Haré lo que me pides.
31 Insistió Jacob:
— Júramelo.
José se lo juró, y a continuación Israel se reclinó sobre la cabecera de la cama.

2 Además, José había elegido a cinco de sus hermanos para presentárselos al faraón. 3 Y este les preguntó:
—¿En qué trabajan ustedes?
—Nosotros, sus siervos, somos pastores, al igual que nuestros antepasados —respondieron ellos—. 4 Hemos venido a vivir en este país porque en Canaán ya no hay pastos para nuestros rebaños. ¡Es terrible el hambre que acosa a ese país! Por eso le rogamos a usted que nos permita vivir en la región de Gosén.
5 Entonces el faraón dijo a José:
—Tu padre y tus hermanos han venido a estar contigo. 6 La tierra de Egipto está a tu disposición. Haz que se asienten en lo mejor de la tierra; que residan en la región de Gosén. Y si sabes que hay entre ellos hombres capaces, ponlos a cargo de mi propio ganado.
7 Luego José llevó a Jacob, su padre, y se lo presentó al faraón. Jacob saludó al faraón y lo bendijo; 8 entonces el faraón preguntó:
—¿Cuántos años tienes?
9 —Ya tengo ciento treinta años —respondió Jacob—. Mis años de andar peregrinando de un lado a otro han sido pocos y difíciles, pero no se comparan con los años de peregrinaje de mis antepasados.
10 Luego Jacob se despidió del faraón, lo bendijo y se retiró de su presencia.
11 José instaló a su padre y a sus hermanos, y les entregó terrenos en la mejor región de Egipto, es decir, en el distrito de Ramsés, tal como lo había ordenado el faraón. 12 José también proveyó de alimentos a su padre y a sus hermanos, y a todos sus familiares, según las necesidades de cada uno.

13 El hambre en Egipto y en Canaán era terrible. No había alimento en ninguna parte y la gente estaba a punto de morir. 14 Todo el dinero que los habitantes de Egipto y de Canaán habían pagado por el alimento, José lo recaudó para depositarlo en el palacio del faraón. 15 Cuando a egipcios y cananeos se les acabó el dinero, los egipcios fueron a ver a José y reclamaron:
—¡Denos de comer! ¿Hemos de morir en su presencia solo porque no tenemos más dinero?
16 Y José contestó:
—Si ya se les acabó el dinero, traigan su ganado y, a cambio, les daré alimento.
17 Los egipcios llevaron a José su ganado, es decir, sus caballos, vacas, ovejas y asnos. A cambio de ellos, José les dio alimento durante todo ese año. 18 Al año siguiente fueron a decirle a José:
—Señor, no podemos ocultar el hecho de que ya no tenemos más dinero y de que todo nuestro ganado ya es suyo. Ya no tenemos nada que ofrecerle, de no ser nuestros propios cuerpos y nuestras tierras. 19 ¿Va usted a permitir que nos muramos junto con nuestras tierras? Cómprenos usted a nosotros y a nuestras tierras, a cambio de alimento. Así seremos esclavos del faraón junto con nuestras tierras. ¡Pero denos usted semilla, para que podamos vivir y la tierra no quede desolada!
20 De esta manera José adquirió para el faraón todas las tierras de Egipto, porque los egipcios, obligados por el hambre, le vendieron todos sus terrenos. Fue así como todo el país llegó a ser propiedad del faraón, 21 y todos quedaron reducidos a esclavitud, de un extremo a otro de Egipto.[a] 22 Los únicos terrenos que José no compró fueron los que pertenecían a los sacerdotes. Estos no tuvieron que vender sus terrenos porque recibían una ración de alimento de parte del faraón.
23 Luego José informó al pueblo:
—Desde ahora ustedes y sus tierras pertenecen al faraón, porque yo los he comprado. Aquí tienen semilla. Siembren la tierra. 24 Cuando llegue la cosecha, deberán entregarle al faraón la quinta parte de lo cosechado. Las otras cuatro partes serán para la siembra de los campos y para alimentarlos a ustedes, a sus hijos y a sus familiares.
25 —¡Usted nos ha salvado la vida y hemos contado con su favor! —respondieron ellos—. ¡Seremos esclavos del faraón!
26 José estableció esta ley en toda la tierra de Egipto, que hasta el día de hoy sigue vigente: la quinta parte de la cosecha pertenece al faraón. Solo las tierras de los sacerdotes no llegaron a ser del faraón.
27 Los israelitas se asentaron en Egipto, en la región de Gosén. Allí adquirieron propiedades, fueron fecundos y llegaron a ser muy numerosos.
28 Jacob residió diecisiete años en Egipto y llegó a vivir un total de ciento cuarenta y siete años. 29 Cuando Israel estaba a punto de morir, mandó llamar a su hijo José y dijo:
—Si de veras me quieres, pon tu mano debajo de mi muslo y prométeme amor y lealtad. ¡Por favor, no me entierres en Egipto! 30 Cuando vaya a descansar junto a mis antepasados, sácame de Egipto y entiérrame en el sepulcro de ellos.
—Haré lo que me pides —contestó José.
31 —¡Júramelo! —insistió su padre.

47 Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, My father and my brothers, with their flocks and their herds and all that they own, have come from the land of Canaan, and they are in the land of Goshen.
2 And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them to Pharaoh.
3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, What is your occupation? And they said to Pharaoh, Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers before us.
4 Moreover, they said to Pharaoh, We have come to sojourn in the land, for your servants have no pasture for our flocks, for the famine is very severe in Canaan. So now, we pray you, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.
5 And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, Your father and your brothers have come to you.
6 The land of Egypt is before you; make your father and your brothers dwell in the best of the land. Let them live in the land of Goshen. And if you know of any men of ability among them, put them in charge of my cattle.
7 Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father and presented him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8 And Pharaoh asked Jacob, How old are you?
9 Jacob said to Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are 130 years; few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and they have [a]not attained to those of the life of my fathers in their pilgrimage.
10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from his presence.
11 Joseph settled his father and brethren and gave them a possession in Egypt in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses (Goshen), as Pharaoh commanded.
12 And Joseph supplied his father and his brethren and all his father’s household with food, according to [the needs of] their families.
13 [In the course of time] there was no food in all the land, for the famine was distressingly severe, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan hung in doubt and wavered by reason of the hunger (destitution, starvation) of the famine.
14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan [in payment] for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.
15 And when the money was exhausted in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, Give us food! Why should we die before your very eyes? For we have no money left.
16 Joseph said, Give up your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for [them] if your money is gone.
17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and [he] gave them food in exchange for the horses, flocks, cattle of the herds, and the donkeys; and he supplied them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.
18 When that year was ended, they came to [Joseph] the second year and said to him, We will not hide from my lord [the fact] that our money is spent; my lord also has our herds of livestock; there is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands.
19 Why should we perish before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed [to plant], that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.
20 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field because of the overwhelming severity of the famine upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s,
21 And as for the people, he removed them to cities and practically made slaves of them [at their own request], from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other.
22 Only the priests’ land he did not buy, for the priests had a fixed pension from Pharaoh and lived on the amount Pharaoh gave them. So they did not sell their land.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Now here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.
24 At [harvest time when you reap] the increase, you shall give one-fifth of it to Pharaoh, and four-fifths shall be your own to use for seed for the field and as food for you and those of your households and for your little ones.
25 And they said, You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord; and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.
26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt—to this day—that Pharaoh should have the fifth part [of the crops]; it was the priests’ land only which did not become Pharaoh’s.
27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they gained possessions there and grew and multiplied exceedingly.
28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so Jacob reached the age of 147 years.
29 When the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, If now I have found favor in your sight, [b]put your hand under my thigh and [promise to] deal loyally and faithfully with me. Do not bury me, I beg of you, in Egypt,
30 But let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place. And [Joseph] said, I will do as you have directed.
31 Then Jacob said, Swear to me [that you will do it]. And he swore to him. And Israel bowed himself upon the head of the bed.

- Genesis 47:9 Abraham, Jacob’s grandfather, had lived to be 175 years old; Isaac, his father, lived to be 180. Jacob lived seventeen years after making this statement to Pharaoh, in which time he had an opportunity to get a much more optimistic view of God’s treatment of him. He died at 147, having said, “The redeeming Angel... has redeemed me continually from every evil” (Gen. 48:16).
- Genesis 47:29 This was a customary manner of taking a solemn oath. The gesture was a reference to the mark of circumcision, the sign of God’s covenant, which is equivalent to our laying our hand upon the Bible. (Adam Clarke, The Holy Bible with A Commentary).

47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(A) and are now in Goshen.”(B) 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them(C) before Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(D)
“Your servants(E) are shepherds,(F)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(G) because the famine is severe in Canaan(H) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(I) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(J)
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(K) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(L) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(M) put them in charge of my own livestock.(N)”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(O) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[a] Pharaoh,(P) 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(Q) My years have been few and difficult,(R) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(S)” 10 Then Jacob blessed[b] Pharaoh(T) and went out from his presence.
11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(U) the district of Rameses,(V) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(W)
Joseph and the Famine
13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(X) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(Y) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(Z) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(AA) all Egypt came to Joseph(AB) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(AC) Our money is all gone.”
16 “Then bring your livestock,(AD)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(AE)” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(AF) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(AG) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(AH) and our livestock belongs to you,(AI) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(AJ)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(AK) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(AL) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(AM) and that the land may not become desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(AN) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[c](AO) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(AP) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(AQ) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(AR) for you so you can plant the ground.(AS) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(AT) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(AU) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(AV)
26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(AW) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(AX)
27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(AY) They acquired property there(AZ) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(BA)
28 Jacob lived in Egypt(BB) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(BC) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(BD) to die,(BE) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(BF) put your hand under my thigh(BG) and promise that you will show me kindness(BH) and faithfulness.(BI) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(BJ) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(BK)
“I will do as you say,” he said.
31 “Swear to me,”(BL) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(BM) and Israel(BN) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[d](BO)
