Caín y Abel
4 El hombre tuvo relaciones sexuales con Eva, su mujer, y ella quedó embarazada y dio a luz a Caín.[a] Y dijo: «¡Con la ayuda del Señor, he tenido un varón!». 2 Después dio a luz a Abel, hermano de Caín.
Abel se dedicó a pastorear ovejas, mientras que Caín se dedicó a trabajar la tierra. 3 Tiempo después, Caín presentó al Señor una ofrenda del fruto de la tierra. 4 Abel también presentó al Señor lo mejor de su rebaño, es decir, los primogénitos con su grasa. Y el Señor miró con agrado a Abel y a su ofrenda, 5 pero no miró así a Caín ni a su ofrenda. Por eso Caín se enfureció y andaba cabizbajo.
6 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué estás tan enojado? ¿Por qué andas cabizbajo? 7 Si hicieras lo bueno, podrías andar con la frente en alto. Pero si haces lo malo, el pecado está a la puerta para dominarte. No obstante, tú puedes dominarlo».
8 Caín habló con su hermano Abel.[b] Y cuando estaban en el campo, Caín atacó a su hermano y lo asesinó.
9 El Señor preguntó a Caín:
—¿Dónde está tu hermano Abel?
—No lo sé —respondió—. ¿Acaso soy yo el que debe cuidar a mi hermano?
10 —¡Qué has hecho! —exclamó el Señor—. Desde la tierra, la sangre de tu hermano me reclama justicia. 11 Por eso, ahora quedarás bajo la maldición de la tierra, la cual ha abierto sus fauces para recibir la sangre de tu hermano, que tú has derramado. 12 Cuando cultives la tierra, no te dará sus frutos y en el mundo serás un fugitivo errante.
13 —Este castigo es más de lo que puedo soportar —dijo Caín al Señor—. 14 Hoy me condenas al destierro y nunca más podré estar en tu presencia. Andaré por el mundo errante como un fugitivo y cualquiera que me encuentre me matará.
15 —No, al contrario[c] —respondió el Señor—, el que mate a Caín será castigado siete veces.
Entonces el Señor puso una marca a Caín para que no lo matara cualquiera que lo encontrara. 16 Así Caín se alejó de la presencia del Señor y se fue a vivir a la región llamada Nod,[d] al este del Edén.
17 Caín tuvo relaciones sexuales con su mujer, la cual quedó embarazada y dio a luz a Enoc. Caín construyó una ciudad y le puso el nombre de su hijo Enoc. 18 Enoc tuvo un hijo llamado Irad, que fue el padre de Mejuyael. Este a su vez fue el padre de Metusael, y Metusael fue el padre de Lamec.
19 Lamec tuvo dos mujeres. Una de ellas se llamaba Ada y la otra, Zila. 20 Ada dio a luz a Jabal, quien a su vez fue el antepasado de los que viven en tiendas de campaña y crían ganado. 21 Jabal tuvo un hermano llamado Jubal, quien fue el antepasado de los que tocan el arpa y la flauta. 22 Por su parte, Zila dio a luz a Tubal Caín, que fue herrero y forjador de toda clase de herramientas de bronce y de hierro. Tubal Caín tuvo una hermana que se llamaba Naamá.
23 Lamec dijo a sus mujeres Ada y Zila:
«¡Escuchen bien, mujeres de Lamec!
¡Escuchen mis palabras!
Maté a un hombre por haberme agredido
y a un muchacho por golpearme.
24 Si Caín será vengado siete veces,
setenta y siete veces será vengado Lamec».
25 Adán volvió a tener relaciones sexuales con su mujer y ella tuvo un hijo al que llamó Set,[e] porque dijo: «Dios me ha concedido otro descendiente en lugar de Abel, al que mató Caín». 26 También Set tuvo un hijo, a quien llamó Enós.
Desde entonces se comenzó a invocar el nombre del Señor.

4 El hombre se unió con su esposa Eva. Ella quedó embarazada y dio a luz a su hijo Caín, y dijo: «Ya tengo un hijo varón. El Señor me lo ha dado.» 2 Después dio a luz a Abel, hermano de Caín. Abel se dedicó a criar ovejas, y Caín se dedicó a cultivar la tierra.
3 Pasó el tiempo, y un día Caín llevó al Señor una ofrenda del producto de su cosecha. 4 También Abel llevó al Señor las primeras y mejores crías de sus ovejas. El Señor miró con agrado a Abel y a su ofrenda, 5 pero no miró así a Caín ni a su ofrenda, por lo que Caín se enojó muchísimo y puso muy mala cara. 6 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué te enojas y pones tan mala cara? 7 Si hicieras lo bueno, podrías levantar la cara; pero como no lo haces, el pecado está esperando el momento de dominarte. Sin embargo, tú puedes dominarlo a él.»
8 Un día, Caín invitó a su hermano Abel a dar un paseo, y cuando los dos estaban ya en el campo, Caín atacó a su hermano Abel y lo mató. 9 Entonces el Señor le preguntó a Caín:
—¿Dónde está tu hermano Abel?
Y Caín contestó:
—No lo sé. ¿Acaso es mi obligación cuidar de él?
10 El Señor le dijo:
—¿Por qué has hecho esto? La sangre de tu hermano, que has derramado en la tierra, me pide a gritos que yo haga justicia. 11 Por eso, quedarás maldito y expulsado de la tierra que se ha bebido la sangre de tu hermano, a quien tú mataste. 12 Aunque trabajes la tierra, no volverá a darte sus frutos. Andarás vagando por el mundo, sin poder descansar jamás.
13 Entonces Caín respondió al Señor:
—Yo no puedo soportar un castigo tan grande. 14 Hoy me has echado fuera de esta tierra, y tendré que vagar por el mundo lejos de tu presencia, sin poder descansar jamás. Y así, cualquiera que me encuentre me matará.
15 Pero el Señor le contestó:
—Pues si alguien te mata, será castigado siete veces.
Entonces el Señor le puso una señal a Caín, para que el que lo encontrara no lo matara. 16 Caín se fue del lugar donde había estado hablando con el Señor, y se quedó a vivir en la región de Nod, que está al oriente de Edén.
Los descendientes de Caín
17 Caín se unió con su mujer, y ella quedó embarazada y dio a luz a Henoc. Luego Caín fundó una ciudad, a la que le puso por nombre Henoc, como a su hijo. 18 Henoc fue el padre de Irad, Irad fue el padre de Mehujael, Mehujael fue el padre de Metusael, y Metusael fue el padre de Lámec. 19 Lámec tuvo dos esposas: una de ellas se llamaba Adá, y la otra se llamaba Silá. 20 Adá dio a luz a Jabal, de quien descienden los que viven en tiendas de campaña y crían ganado. 21 Jabal tuvo un hermano llamado Jubal, de quien descienden todos los que tocan el arpa y la flauta. 22 Por su parte, Silá dio a luz a Tubal-caín, que fue herrero y hacía objetos de bronce y de hierro. Tubal-caín tuvo una hermana que se llamaba Naamá.
23 Un día, Lámec les dijo a sus esposas Adá y Silá:
«Escuchen bien lo que les digo:
he matado a un hombre por herirme,
a un muchacho por golpearme.
24 Si a Caín lo vengarán siete veces,
a mí tendrán que vengarme
setenta y siete veces.»
El tercer hijo de Adán y Eva
25 Adán volvió a unirse con su esposa, y ella tuvo un hijo al que llamó Set, pues dijo: «Dios me ha dado otro hijo en lugar de Abel, al que Caín mató.»
26 También Set tuvo un hijo, al que llamó Enós. Desde entonces se comenzó a invocar el nombre del Señor.

4 Y el hombre se unió a Eva, su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Caín[a], y dijo: «He adquirido varón[b] con la ayuda del Señor». 2 Después dio a luz a Abel su hermano. Y Abel(A) fue pastor(B) de ovejas y Caín fue labrador de la tierra. 3 Al transcurrir el tiempo[c], Caín trajo al Señor una ofrenda del fruto de la tierra. 4 También Abel(C), por su parte, trajo de los primogénitos de sus ovejas y de la grasa de los mismos. El Señor miró con agrado a Abel y su ofrenda(D), 5 pero no miró con agrado(E) a Caín y su ofrenda. Caín se enojó mucho(F) y su semblante se demudó. 6 Entonces el Señor dijo a Caín: «¿Por qué estás enojado(G), y por qué se ha demudado tu semblante? 7 Si haces bien, ¿no serás aceptado?[d](H) Pero si no haces bien, el pecado(I) yace a la puerta y te codicia[e], pero tú debes dominarlo(J)». 8 Caín dijo a su hermano Abel: «Vayamos al campo[f]». Y aconteció que cuando estaban en el campo, Caín se levantó contra su hermano Abel y lo mató(K).
La maldición de Caín
9 Entonces el Señor dijo a Caín: «¿Dónde está tu hermano Abel(L)?». Y él respondió: «No sé. ¿Soy yo acaso guardián de mi hermano?». 10 Y el Señor le dijo: «¿Qué has hecho? La voz de la sangre de tu hermano clama a Mí desde la tierra(M). 11 Ahora pues, maldito(N) eres de la tierra, que ha abierto su boca para recibir de tu mano la sangre de tu hermano. 12 Cuando cultives el suelo, no te dará más su vigor(O). Vagabundo y errante serás en la tierra(P)».
13 Y Caín dijo al Señor: «Mi castigo[g] es demasiado grande para soportarlo. 14 Hoy me has arrojado(Q) de la superficie de la tierra, y de Tu presencia[h] me esconderé, y seré vagabundo y errante en la tierra(R). Y sucederá que cualquiera que me halle me matará(S)». 15 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «No será así[i], pues cualquiera que mate a Caín, siete veces sufrirá venganza(T)». Y el Señor puso una señal[j] sobre Caín, para que cualquiera que lo hallara no lo matara(U).

16 Y salió Caín de la presencia del Señor(V), y se estableció[k] en la tierra de Nod[l], al oriente del Edén. 17 Y conoció Caín a su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Enoc. Caín edificó una ciudad y la llamó[m] Enoc, como el nombre de su hijo. 18 A Enoc le nació Irad. Irad fue padre de Mehujael, Mehujael fue padre de Metusael, y Metusael fue padre de Lamec. 19 Lamec tomó para sí dos mujeres(W). El nombre de una era Ada, y el nombre de la otra, Zila. 20 Y Ada dio a luz a Jabal, el cual fue padre de los que habitan en tiendas y tienen ganado. 21 Su hermano se llamaba Jubal, el cual fue padre de todos los que tocan la lira[n] y la flauta. 22 Zila a su vez dio a luz a Tubal Caín, forjador de todo utensilio[o] de bronce y de hierro. Y la hermana de Tubal Caín era Naama. 23 Lamec dijo a sus mujeres:
«Ada y Zila, oigan mi voz;
Mujeres de Lamec,
Presten oído a mis palabras,
Pues he dado muerte[p](X) a un hombre por haberme herido,
Y a un muchacho por haberme pegado.
24 -»Si siete veces(Y) es vengado Caín,
Entonces Lamec lo será setenta veces siete[q]».
Nacimiento de Set
25 Adán se unió otra vez a su mujer(Z); y ella dio a luz un hijo y le puso por nombre Set[r], porque, dijo ella: «Dios me ha dado[s] otro hijo[t] en lugar de Abel, pues Caín lo mató(AA)». 26 A Set le nació también un hijo y le puso por nombre Enós(AB). Por ese tiempo comenzaron los hombres a invocar[u] el nombre del Señor(AC).

4 Now Adam and Eve discovered the pleasures of lovemaking, and soon Eve conceived and gave birth to a son whom they named Cain.
Eve (excited): Look, I have created a new human, a male child, with the help of the Eternal.
One of the first things Adam and Eve do after being banished from the garden of Eden is to make a baby. Despite the pain of childbirth, Eve speaks with joy of the birth of her son. She certainly suffers and could have easily died in childbirth, but the desire to reproduce and the joy of joining with God in the creative process brings great reward. Every parent knows the risks and rewards of bringing forth the next generation.
2 Eve went on to give birth to Cain’s brother, Abel. Abel grew up to become a shepherd, and Cain grew up to become a farmer. 3 After he had learned how to produce food from the fields, Cain gave the Eternal One an offering—some of the crops he had grown from the ground. 4 For his part of the offering, Abel gave God some tender lamb meat—the choicest cuts from the firstborn of his flock. The Eternal One accepted Abel and his gift of lamb, 5 while He had no regard for Cain and what he presented. Because of this, Cain became extremely angry and his face fell.
God notices Cain’s reaction and confronts him.
Eternal One (to Cain): 6 Why are you angry? And why do you look so despondent? 7 Don’t you know that as long as you do what is right, then I accept you? But if you do not do what is right, watch out, because sin is crouching at the door, ready to pounce on you! You must master it before it masters you.
Jealousy is eating at Cain’s heart. Left unattended, it consumes him.
8 Cain spoke to his brother Abel. When they were in the field, Cain’s envy of his brother got the better of him, and he attacked and killed Abel.
Eternal One (to Cain): 9 Where’s your brother Abel?
Cain: I have no idea. Am I supposed to be responsible for where he goes and what he does?
Eternal One: 10 What have you done? Listen! I can hear the voice of your brother’s blood crying out to Me from the ground! 11 And now you are cursed, cut off from the ground—the ground that opened up and received your brother’s innocent blood, spilled by your own murderous hand! 12 From now on, when you till the ground, it will no longer yield for you its strength and nourishment. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.
Cain: 13 My punishment is more than I can bear! 14 Today You have banned me from the soil and hidden me from Your presence! I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and anyone who meets me will want to kill me!
Eternal One: 15 That’s not the case! Whoever kills you will suffer My vengeance and pay the penalty seven times!
Then God put a special mark on Cain, so that no one who came in contact with him would try to kill him.
16 Then Cain went away from the Eternal’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, a place for wanderers, to the east of Eden. 17 Cain made love to his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city there and named it Enoch after his son. 18 And this is how their family progressed: Enoch’s son was Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael. Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 Now Lamech married two wives, Adah and Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal. His descendants are those who make their homes in tents and keep livestock. 21 Jabal’s brother’s name was Jubal, and his descendants are musicians who play instruments such as the lyre and the pipe. 22 Zillah, Lamech’s other wife, gave birth to Tubal-cain. Now he was a bronze- and ironsmith, and his sister was Naamah.
23 One day, Lamech announced to his wives:
Lamech: Adah and Zillah, listen to me!
Wives of Lamech, I need to tell you something!
I killed a man who struck me.
He was a young man who wounded me first.
24 Here’s how I see it:
if Cain is avenged seven times,
then surely Lamech must be avenged seventy-seven times!
25 Meanwhile, Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to another son and named him Seth.
Eve (to herself): God has given me another child to replace Abel, since Cain killed him.
26 After many years passed, Seth became the father of a son and named him Enosh. This was about the time when people began to worship and call on the name of the Eternal One.

Cain and Abel
4 Adam[a] made love to his wife(A) Eve,(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.(D)
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.(E) 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering(F) to the Lord.(G) 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions(H) from some of the firstborn of his flock.(I) The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,(J) 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?(K) Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;(L) it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.(M)”
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(N)
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”(O)
“I don’t know,(P)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.(Q) 11 Now you are under a curse(R) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.(S) You will be a restless wanderer(T) on the earth.(U)”
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;(V) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,(W) and whoever finds me will kill me.”(X)
15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain(Y) will suffer vengeance(Z) seven times over.(AA)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence(AB) and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.(AC)
17 Cain made love to his wife,(AD) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,(AE) and he named it after his son(AF) Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 Lamech married(AG) two women,(AH) one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments(AI) and pipes.(AJ) 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged(AK) all kinds of tools out of[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed(AL) a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged(AM) seven times,(AN)
then Lamech seventy-seven times.(AO)”
25 Adam made love to his wife(AP) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[h](AQ) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(AR) 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.(AS)
At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.(AT)
