José y la esposa de Potifar
39 Llevado, pues, José a Egipto, Potifar, un egipcio oficial del faraón, capitán de la guardia, lo compró de los ismaelitas que lo habían llevado allá. 2 Pero Jehová estaba con José, quien llegó a ser un hombre próspero, y vivía en la casa del egipcio, su amo. 3 Vio su amo que Jehová estaba con él, que Jehová lo hacía prosperar en todas sus empresas. 4 Así halló José gracia a sus ojos, y lo servía; lo hizo mayordomo de su casa y entregó en su poder todo lo que tenía. 5 Desde el momento en que le dio el encargo de su casa y de todo lo que tenía, Jehová bendijo la casa del egipcio a causa de José, y la bendición de Jehová estaba sobre todo lo que tenía, tanto en la casa como en el campo. 6 Él mismo dejó todo lo que tenía en manos de José, y con él no se preocupaba de cosa alguna sino del pan que comía.
José era de hermoso semblante y bella presencia, 7 y aconteció después de esto, que la mujer de su amo puso sus ojos en José, y le dijo:
—Duerme conmigo.
8 Pero él no quiso, y dijo a la mujer de su amo:
—Mi señor no se preocupa conmigo de lo que hay en casa, y ha puesto en mis manos todo lo que tiene. 9 No hay otro mayor que yo en esta casa, y ninguna cosa me ha reservado sino a ti, por cuanto tú eres su mujer. ¿Cómo, pues, haría yo este gran mal, y pecaría contra Dios?
10 Hablaba ella a José cada día, pero él no la escuchaba para acostarse al lado de ella, para estar con ella. 11 Pero aconteció un día, cuando entró él en casa a hacer su oficio, que no había nadie de los de casa allí. 12 Entonces ella lo asió por la ropa, diciendo:
—Duerme conmigo.
Pero él, dejando su ropa en las manos de ella, huyó y salió. 13 Cuando ella vio que le había dejado la ropa en sus manos y había huido fuera, 14 llamó a los de casa, y les dijo:
—Mirad, nos ha traído un hebreo para que hiciera burla de nosotros. Ha venido a mí para dormir conmigo, y yo di grandes voces. 15 Al ver que yo alzaba la voz y gritaba, dejó junto a mí su ropa, y salió huyendo.
16 Puso ella junto a sí la ropa de José, hasta que llegó su señor a la casa. 17 Entonces le repitió las mismas palabras, diciendo:
—El siervo hebreo que nos trajiste, vino a mí para deshonrarme. 18 Y cuando yo alcé mi voz y grité, él dejó su ropa junto a mí y huyó fuera.
19 Al oír el amo de José las palabras de su mujer, que decía: «Así me ha tratado tu siervo», se encendió su furor. 20 Tomó su amo a José y lo puso en la cárcel, donde estaban los presos del rey; y allí lo mantuvo. 21 Pero Jehová estaba con José y extendió a él su misericordia, pues hizo que se ganara el favor del jefe de la cárcel. 22 El jefe de la cárcel puso en manos de José el cuidado de todos los presos que había en aquella prisión; todo lo que se hacía allí, él lo hacía. 23 No necesitaba atender el jefe de la cárcel cosa alguna de las que estaban al cuidado de José, porque Jehová estaba con José, y lo que él hacía, Jehová lo prosperaba.

39 1 Joseph sold to Potiphar. 2 God prospereth him. 7 Potiphar’s wife tempteth him. 13, 20 He is accused and cast in prison. 23 God showeth him favor.
1 Now Joseph was brought down into Egypt: and Potiphar [a]an Eunuch of Pharaoh’s (and his chief steward an Egyptian) bought him at the hand of the Ishmaelites, which had brought him thither.
2 And the [b]Lord was with Joseph, and he was a man that prospered and was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him: and made him [c]ruler of his house, and put all that he had in his hand.
5 And from that time that he had made him ruler over his house and over all that he had, the Lord [d]blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake: and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 Therefore he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, [e]and took account of nothing, that was with him, save only of the bread, which he did eat. And Joseph was a fair person, and well favored.
7 Now therefore after these things, his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, [f]Lie with me.
8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what he hath in the house with me, but hath committed all that he had to mine hand.
9 There is no man greater in this house than I: neither hath he kept anything from me, but only thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness and so sin against [g]God?
10 And albeit she spake to Joseph day by day, yet he hearkened not unto her, to lie with her, or to be in her company.
11 Then on a certain day Joseph entered into the house to do his business: and there was no man of the household in the house.
12 Therefore she caught him by his garment, saying, Sleep with me: but he left his garment in her hand and fled, and got him out.
13 Now when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled out,
14 She called unto the men of her house, and told them, saying, Behold, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us [h]to mock us: who came in to me for to have slept with me: but I [i]cried with a loud voice.
15 And when he heard that I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garments with me, and fled away, and got him out.
16 So she laid up his garment by her, until her lord came home.
17 Then she told him [j]according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came into me, to mock me.
18 But as soon as I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19 Then when his master heard the words of his wife, which she told him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me, his anger was kindled.
20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him in [k][l]prison, in the place, where the king’s prisoners lay bound: and there he was in prison.
21 ¶ But the Lord was with Joseph, and [m]showed him mercy, and got him favor in the sight of the [n]master of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison, and [o]whatsoever they did there, that did he.
23 And the keeper of the prison looked unto nothing that was under his hand, seeing that the Lord was with him: for whatsoever he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
39 Now Joseph(A) had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard,(B) bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.(C)
2 The Lord was with Joseph(D) so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him(E) and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,(F) 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes(G) and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,(H) and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.(I) 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household(J) of the Egyptian because of Joseph.(K) The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.(L) 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;(M) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,(N) 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”(O)
8 But he refused.(P) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.(Q) 9 No one is greater in this house than I am.(R) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(S) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(T) to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(U) and none of the household servants(V) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(W) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(X) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(Y)
13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(Z) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(AA) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(AB) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(AC) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(AD)
16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story:(AE) “That Hebrew(AF) slave(AG) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.(AH) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,(AI) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him;(AJ) he showed him kindness(AK) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(AL) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.(AM) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s(AN) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.(AO)
