34 Salió Dina la hija de Lea, la cual esta había dado a luz a Jacob, a ver a las hijas del país. 2 Y la vio Siquem hijo de Hamor heveo, príncipe de aquella tierra, y la tomó, y se acostó con ella, y la deshonró. 3 Pero su alma se apegó a Dina la hija de Lea, y se enamoró de la joven, y habló al corazón de ella. 4 Y habló Siquem a Hamor su padre, diciendo: Tómame por mujer a esta joven. 5 Pero oyó Jacob que Siquem había amancillado a Dina su hija; y estando sus hijos con su ganado en el campo, calló Jacob hasta que ellos viniesen.

13 Pero respondieron los hijos de Jacob a Siquem y a Hamor su padre con palabras engañosas, por cuanto había amancillado a Dina su hermana. 14 Y les dijeron: No podemos hacer esto de dar nuestra hermana a hombre incircunciso, porque entre nosotros es abominación. 15 Mas con esta condición os complaceremos: si habéis de ser como nosotros, que se circuncide entre vosotros todo varón. 16 Entonces os daremos nuestras hijas, y tomaremos nosotros las vuestras; y habitaremos con vosotros, y seremos un pueblo. 17 Mas si no nos prestareis oído para circuncidaros, tomaremos nuestra hija y nos iremos. 18 Y parecieron bien sus palabras a Hamor, y a Siquem hijo de Hamor. 19 Y no tardó el joven en hacer aquello, porque la hija de Jacob le había agradado; y él era el más distinguido de toda la casa de su padre.

—Ve a pedir la mano de esta muchacha. Quiero casarme con ella.

5 Jacob supo que Siquem había deshonrado a su hija Dina, pero como sus hijos estaban en el campo con sus animales, no dijo nada hasta que ellos regresaron. 6 Mientras tanto, Hamor, el padre de Siquem, fue a ver a Jacob para hablar con él.

—Yo les ruego que acepten. Les daré lo que me pidan. 12 No importa que sea una compensación más alta de lo acostumbrado y muchos regalos, yo se los daré; pero dejen que la muchacha se case conmigo.

13 Sin embargo, como Siquem había deshonrado a Dina, los hijos de Jacob les contestaron a él y a su padre Hamor con engaños, 14 y les dijeron:

—No podemos darle nuestra hermana a un hombre que no está circuncidado, porque eso sería una vergüenza para nosotros. 15 Sólo podemos aceptar con esta condición: que ustedes sean como nosotros; es decir, que se circunciden todos los varones entre ustedes. 16 Entonces sí, ustedes se casarán con nuestras hijas y nosotros nos casaremos con las de ustedes; viviremos entre ustedes y seremos un solo pueblo. 17 Pero si no aceptan nuestra condición de circuncidarse, nos iremos de aquí y nos llevaremos a nuestra hermana.

18 Hamor y su hijo Siquem estuvieron de acuerdo con lo que ellos propusieron. 19 Sin perder más tiempo, el joven se circuncidó, porque la hija de Jacob le había gustado. Como Siquem era el más respetado en la familia de su padre, 20 fueron él y su padre Hamor a la entrada de la ciudad, donde se trataban los negocios, y allí dijeron a los habitantes:

21 —Estos hombres son nuestros amigos, y van a vivir y hacer negocios en este lugar, pues hay suficiente terreno para ellos; nosotros podremos casarnos con sus hijas, y ellos podrán casarse con las nuestras. 22 Pero, para que seamos un solo pueblo, ellos aceptan vivir con nosotros sólo con esta condición: que todos nuestros varones se circunciden, tal como ellos lo acostumbran. 23 Todas sus pertenencias y todos sus animales serán nuestros. Sólo tenemos que decir que sí, y ellos se quedarán a vivir con nosotros.

24 Todos los hombres de la ciudad que estaban en edad militar estuvieron de acuerdo con Hamor y con su hijo Siquem, y fueron circuncidados. 25 Pero Simeón y Leví, hijos de Jacob y hermanos de Dina, fueron a la ciudad al tercer día, cuando los hombres todavía tenían los dolores de la circuncisión, y espada en mano los mataron a todos, pues no encontraron resistencia. 26 A filo de espada mataron a Hamor y a su hijo Siquem; luego sacaron a Dina de la casa de Siquem y se fueron. 27 Llegaron también los otros hijos de Jacob, y pasando sobre los muertos saquearon el pueblo para vengar la deshonra de su hermana. 28 Se llevaron ovejas, vacas, asnos y todo lo que había en la ciudad y en el campo; 29 robaron todo lo que había en las casas, y se llevaron prisioneros a todos los niños y mujeres. 30 Entonces Jacob les dijo a Simeón y Leví:

—Ustedes me han puesto en aprietos. Ahora los habitantes de este lugar, los cananeos y ferezeos, me van a odiar. Se juntarán contra mí y me atacarán, y como tengo muy pocos hombres, nos matarán a mí y a mi familia.

31 Pero ellos contestaron:

—¿Acaso tenía él que tratar a nuestra hermana como a una prostituta?

34 Now Dinah, Leah’s daughter whom she bore to Jacob, went to meet[a] the young women[b] of the land. 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, who ruled that area, saw her, he grabbed her, forced himself on her,[c] and sexually assaulted her.[d] 3 Then he became very attached[e] to Dinah, Jacob’s daughter. He fell in love with the young woman and spoke romantically to her.[f] 4 Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Acquire this young girl as my wife.”[g] 5 When[h] Jacob heard that Shechem[i] had violated his daughter Dinah, his sons were with the livestock in the field. So Jacob remained silent[j] until they came in.

6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah.[k] 7 Now Jacob’s sons had come in from the field when they heard the news.[l] They[m] were offended[n] and very angry because Shechem[o] had disgraced Israel[p] by sexually assaulting[q] Jacob’s daughter, a crime that should not be committed.[r]

8 But Hamor made this appeal to them: “My son Shechem is in love with your daughter.[s] Please give her to him as his wife. 9 Intermarry with us.[t] Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves.[u] 10 You may live[v] among us, and the land will be open to you.[w] Live in it, travel freely in it,[x] and acquire property in it.”

11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s[y] father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you require of me[z] I’ll give.[aa] 12 You can make the bride price and the gift I must bring very expensive,[ab] and I’ll give[ac] whatever you ask[ad] of me. Just give me the young woman as my wife!”

13 Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem[ae] had violated their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, “We cannot give[af] our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for it would be a disgrace[ag] to us. 15 We will give you our consent on this one condition: You must become[ah] like us by circumcising[ai] all your males. 16 Then we will give[aj] you our daughters to marry,[ak] and we will take your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people. 17 But if you do not agree to our terms[al] by being circumcised, then we will take[am] our sister[an] and depart.”

18 Their offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.[ao] 19 The young man did not delay in doing what they asked[ap] because he wanted Jacob’s daughter Dinah[aq] badly. (Now he was more important[ar] than anyone in his father’s household.)[as] 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate[at] of their city and spoke to the men of their city, 21 “These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough[au] for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry.[av] 22 Only on this one condition will these men consent to live with us and become one people: They demand[aw] that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised. 23 If we do so,[ax] won’t their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? 24 All the men who assembled at the city gate[ay] agreed with[az] Hamor and his son Shechem. Every male who assembled at the city gate[ba] was circumcised. 25 In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword[bb] and went to the unsuspecting city[bc] and slaughtered every male. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left. 27 Jacob’s sons killed them[bd] and looted the city because their sister had been violated.[be] 28 They took their flocks, herds, and donkeys, as well as everything in the city and in the surrounding fields.[bf] 29 They captured as plunder[bg] all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, including everything in the houses.

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought ruin on[bh] me by making me a foul odor[bi] among the inhabitants of the land—among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I[bj] am few in number; they will join forces against me and attack me, and both I and my family will be destroyed!” 31 But Simeon and Levi replied,[bk] “Should he treat our sister like a common prostitute?”

This third category develops from the second by metonymy. In certain contexts emotional pain leads to embarrassment and/or anger. The third category fits best in Gen 34:7 because Jacob’s sons were not merely wounded emotionally. On the contrary, Shechem’s action prompted them to strike out in judgment against the source of their distress.

  44. Genesis 34:19 tn The Hebrew verb כָּבֵד (kaved), translated “was…important,” has the primary meaning “to be heavy,” but here carries a secondary sense of “to be important” (that is, “heavy” in honor or respect).

  60. Genesis 34:30 tn The traditional translation is “troubled me” (KJV, ASV), but the verb refers to personal or national disaster and suggests complete ruin (see Josh 7:25, Judg 11:35, Prov 11:17). The remainder of the verse describes the “trouble” Simeon and Levi had caused.

Genesis 34:30 tn In the causative stem the Hebrew verb בָּאַשׁ (baʾash) means “to cause to stink, to have a foul smell.” In the contexts in which it is used it describes foul smells, stenches, or things that are odious.   62. Genesis 34:30 tn Jacob speaks in the first person as the head and representative of the entire family.
  63. Genesis 34:31 tn Heb “but they said.” The referent of “they” (Simeon and Levi) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
