Encuentro de Jacob con Esaú
33 A la distancia, Jacob vio a Esaú que llegaba con cuatrocientos hombres. Entonces repartió a sus hijos entre Lea, Raquel y las dos siervas. 2 Al frente de todos puso a las dos siervas junto con sus hijos, luego a Lea y sus hijos, y finalmente a Raquel y su hijo José. 3 Luego Jacob pasó al frente. Cuando estuvo cerca de su hermano, se inclinó siete veces delante de él. 4 Esaú, al verlo, corrió a su encuentro, lo abrazó afectuosamente y lo besó; y ambos se pusieron a llorar. 5 Entonces Esaú vio a las mujeres y a los niños, y preguntó:
―¿Quiénes son estas personas que están contigo?
―Son los hijos que Dios, por su amor, me ha dado —respondió Jacob.
6 Las concubinas se adelantaron con sus hijos y se inclinaron ante Esaú. 7 Luego Lea y sus hijos se acercaron y también se inclinaron ante Esaú. Finalmente, llegaron Raquel y José y también se inclinaron.
8 ―¿Y para qué era todo ese ganado que he encontrado en el camino mientras venía hacia acá? —preguntó Esaú.
Jacob contestó:
―Son obsequios que te envié para ganarme tu favor.
9 ―Hermano mío, yo tengo bastante —dijo Esaú—. Déjalos para ti.
10 ―No, te ruego que los aceptes —dijo Jacob—, porque al verte me parece estar viendo a Dios mismo, pues me has recibido con mucha bondad. 11 Por favor, acepta mis obsequios. Dios ha sido muy misericordioso conmigo y me ha dado muchas riquezas.
Tanto insistió Jacob, que al fin Esaú aceptó los regalos.
12 ―Bueno, ahora pongámonos en marcha —dijo Esaú—. Mis hombres y yo nos quedaremos con ustedes y les señalaremos el camino.
13 Pero Jacob respondió:
―Como puedes ver, algunos de mis hijos son pequeños, y además el ganado tiene crías, de modo que si avanzamos muy rápido, morirán. 14 Vé tú adelante. Nosotros iremos detrás de ustedes, al paso de los niños y del ganado. Nos encontraremos en Seír.
15 ―Bueno —dijo Esaú—, al menos permíteme que te deje algunos hombres para que te ayuden y sirvan de guía.
―No —insistió Jacob—, no es necesario. Por favor, acepta mi sugerencia.
16 Entonces, aquel mismo día, Esaú emprendió el regreso a Seír. 17 Por su parte Jacob y su familia se fueron hasta Sucot. Allí levantó un campamento con cabañas para su ganado. Por eso es que el lugar se llama Sucot (cabañas).
18 Luego llegaron a salvo a Siquén, en Canaán, y acamparon fuera de la ciudad. 19 Jacob le compró a la familia de Jamor, padre de Siquén, por cien monedas de plata, un pedazo de tierra. 20 Allí edificó un altar y lo llamó El Elohé Israel (Dios es el Dios de Israel).

Reconciliación entre Jacob y Esaú
33 Alzando Jacob sus ojos, miró, y he aquí venía Esaú, y los cuatrocientos hombres con él; entonces repartió él los niños entre Lea y Raquel y las dos siervas. 2 Y puso las siervas y sus niños delante, luego a Lea y sus niños, y a Raquel y a José los últimos. 3 Y él pasó delante de ellos y se inclinó a tierra siete veces, hasta que llegó a su hermano. 4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro y le abrazó, y se echó sobre su cuello, y le besó; y lloraron. 5 Y alzó sus ojos y vio a las mujeres y los niños, y dijo: ¿Quiénes son estos? Y él respondió: Son los niños que Dios ha dado a tu siervo. 6 Luego vinieron las siervas, ellas y sus niños, y se inclinaron. 7 Y vino Lea con sus niños, y se inclinaron; y después llegó José y Raquel, y también se inclinaron. 8 Y Esaú dijo: ¿Qué te propones con todos estos grupos que he encontrado? Y Jacob respondió: El hallar gracia en los ojos de mi señor. 9 Y dijo Esaú: Suficiente tengo yo, hermano mío; sea para ti lo que es tuyo. 10 Y dijo Jacob: No, yo te ruego; si he hallado ahora gracia en tus ojos, acepta mi presente, porque he visto tu rostro, como si hubiera visto el rostro de Dios, pues que con tanto favor me has recibido. 11 Acepta, te ruego, mi presente que te he traído, porque Dios me ha hecho merced, y todo lo que hay aquí es mío. E insistió con él, y Esaú lo tomó. 12 Y Esaú dijo: Anda, vamos; y yo iré delante de ti. 13 Y Jacob le dijo: Mi señor sabe que los niños son tiernos, y que tengo ovejas y vacas paridas; y si las fatigan, en un día morirán todas las ovejas. 14 Pase ahora mi señor delante de su siervo, y yo me iré poco a poco al paso del ganado que va delante de mí, y al paso de los niños, hasta que llegue a mi señor a Seir. 15 Y Esaú dijo: Dejaré ahora contigo de la gente que viene conmigo. Y Jacob dijo: ¿Para qué esto? Halle yo gracia en los ojos de mi señor. 16 Así volvió Esaú aquel día por su camino a Seir. 17 Y Jacob fue a Sucot, y edificó allí casa para sí, e hizo cabañas para su ganado; por tanto, llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Sucot.[a]
18 Después Jacob llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, cuando venía de Padan-aram; y acampó delante de la ciudad. 19 Y compró una parte del campo,(A) donde plantó su tienda, de mano de los hijos de Hamor padre de Siquem, por cien monedas.[b] 20 Y erigió allí un altar, y lo llamó El-Elohe-Israel.[c]

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming toward him with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two slave women. 2 He put the slaves and their children first, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed to the ground(A) seven times until he approached his brother.
4 But Esau ran to meet him, hugged him, threw his arms around him, and kissed him. Then they wept.(B) 5 When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, “Who are these with you?”
He answered, “The children God has graciously given your servant.”(C) 6 Then the slaves and their children approached him and bowed down. 7 Leah and her children also approached and bowed down, and then Joseph and Rachel approached and bowed down.
8 So Esau said, “What do you mean by this whole procession[a] I met?” (D)
“To find favor with you, my lord,”(E) he answered.
9 “I have enough, my brother,” Esau replied. “Keep what you have.”
10 But Jacob said, “No, please! If I have found favor with you, take this gift from me. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing God’s face, since you have accepted me. 11 Please take my present that was brought to you, because God has been gracious to me and I have everything I need.” So Jacob urged him until he accepted.
12 Then Esau said, “Let’s move on, and I’ll go ahead of you.”
13 Jacob replied, “My lord knows that the children are weak, and I have nursing flocks and herds. If they are driven hard for one day, the whole herd will die. 14 Let my lord go ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a pace suited to the livestock and the children, until I come to my lord at Seir.”
15 Esau said, “Let me leave some of my people with you.”
But he replied, “Why do that? Please indulge me,[b] my lord.”(F)
16 That day Esau started on his way back to Seir, 17 but Jacob went to Succoth. He built a house for himself and shelters for his livestock; that is why the place was called Succoth.[c](G)
18 After Jacob came from Paddan-aram, he arrived safely(H) at Shechem(I) in the land of Canaan and camped in front of the city. 19 He purchased a section of the field where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.[d](J) 20 And he set up an altar there and called it God, the God of Israel.[e]

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men;(A) so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.(B) 2 He put the female servants and their children(C) in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph(D) in the rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground(E) seven times(F) as he approached his brother.
4 But Esau(G) ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.(H) And they wept.(I) 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.
Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.(J)”
6 Then the female servants and their children(K) approached and bowed down.(L) 7 Next, Leah and her children(M) came and bowed down.(N) Last of all came Joseph and Rachel,(O) and they too bowed down.
8 Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”(P)
“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,”(Q) he said.
9 But Esau said, “I already have plenty,(R) my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes,(S) accept this gift(T) from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God,(U) now that you have received me favorably.(V) 11 Please accept the present(W) that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me(X) and I have all I need.”(Y) And because Jacob insisted,(Z) Esau accepted it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord(AA) knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young.(AB) If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds(AC) before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.(AD)”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”(AE)
16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.(AF) 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(AG) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[a]
18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[b](AH) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(AI) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(AJ) the father of Shechem,(AK) the plot of ground(AL) where he pitched his tent.(AM) 20 There he set up an altar(AN) and called it El Elohe Israel.[d]
