Reconciliación entre Jacob y Esaú

33 Jacob levantó la vista, y vio que Esaú venía acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres. Entonces repartió a los niños entre Lea y Raquel y las dos siervas, 2 puso primero a las siervas y sus niños, luego a Lea y sus niños, y por último a Raquel y a José; 3 luego él se adelantó a ellos, y siete veces se inclinó hasta el suelo, hasta estar cerca de su hermano. 4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro y, echándose a su cuello, lo abrazó y lo besó. Y los dos lloraron. 5 Pero al levantar Esaú la vista, y ver a las mujeres y los niños, preguntó:

«¿Y éstos, quiénes son?»

Y Jacob respondió:

«Son los niños que Dios le ha dado a este siervo tuyo.»

6 Llegaron entonces las siervas con sus niños, y se inclinaron. 7 Luego llegó Lea con sus niños, y se inclinaron; y tras ellos llegaron José y Raquel, y también se inclinaron. 8 Esaú preguntó:

«¿Qué te propones hacer con todos estos grupos que me he encontrado?»

Y Jacob respondió:

«He querido ganarme la buena voluntad de mi señor.»

9 Y Esaú dijo:

«Yo tengo ya demasiado, hermano mío. Lo que es tuyo, es tuyo.»

10 Pero Jacob respondió:

«¡No, por favor! Si me he ganado tu buena voluntad, acepta mi presente. El ver tu rostro es como haber visto el rostro de Dios. Tú me has mostrado tu buena voluntad. 11 Acepta, por favor, el presente que te he traído. Dios ha sido muy bueno conmigo, y todo esto es mío.»

Y tanto le insistió Jacob, que Esaú lo aceptó. 12 Luego dijo Esaú:

«Vamos, pongámonos en marcha. Yo iré delante de ti.»

13 Pero Jacob le dijo:

«Mi señor sabe que los niños son débiles, y que tengo ovejas y vacas recién paridas; si se les fatiga, en un solo día pueden morir todas las ovejas. 14 Ruego a mi señor adelantarse a su siervo, que yo iré poco a poco, al paso del ganado que va delante de mí y al paso de los niños, hasta alcanzar a mi señor en Seir.»

15 Esaú le dijo:

«Permíteme dejar contigo parte de la gente que viene conmigo.»

Y Jacob le dijo:

«¿Para qué hacerlo así? Muéstreme mi señor su buena voluntad.»

16 Ese mismo día Esaú volvió a Seir por su camino, 17 y Jacob se fue a Sucot. Allí se construyó una casa, y unas cabañas para su ganado, y es por eso que a ese lugar le puso por nombre Sucot.[a]

18 De regreso de Padán Aram, Jacob llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquén, que está en la tierra de Canaán, y acampó delante de la ciudad; 19 por cien monedas[b] compró una parte del campo(A) a los hijos de Jamor, padre de Siquén. Allí plantó su tienda, 20 y levantó un altar, al que llamó El Elohé Israel.[c]

33 Alzando Jacob sus ojos, miró, y he aquí venía Esaú, y los cuatrocientos hombres con él; entonces repartió él los niños entre Lea y Raquel y las dos siervas. 2 Y puso las siervas y sus niños delante, luego a Lea y sus niños, y a Raquel y a José los últimos. 3 Y él pasó delante de ellos y se inclinó a tierra siete veces, hasta que llegó a su hermano. 4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro y le abrazó, y se echó sobre su cuello, y le besó; y lloraron. 5 Y alzó sus ojos y vio a las mujeres y los niños, y dijo: ¿Quiénes son estos? Y él respondió: Son los niños que Dios ha dado a tu siervo. 6 Luego vinieron las siervas, ellas y sus niños, y se inclinaron. 7 Y vino Lea con sus niños, y se inclinaron; y después llegó José y Raquel, y también se inclinaron. 8 Y Esaú dijo: ¿Qué te propones con todos estos grupos que he encontrado? Y Jacob respondió: El hallar gracia en los ojos de mi señor. 9 Y dijo Esaú: Suficiente tengo yo, hermano mío; sea para ti lo que es tuyo. 10 Y dijo Jacob: No, yo te ruego; si he hallado ahora gracia en tus ojos, acepta mi presente, porque he visto tu rostro, como si hubiera visto el rostro de Dios, pues que con tanto favor me has recibido. 11 Acepta, te ruego, mi presente que te he traído, porque Dios me ha hecho merced, y todo lo que hay aquí es mío. E insistió con él, y Esaú lo tomó. 12 Y Esaú dijo: Anda, vamos; y yo iré delante de ti. 13 Y Jacob le dijo: Mi señor sabe que los niños son tiernos, y que tengo ovejas y vacas paridas; y si las fatigan, en un día morirán todas las ovejas. 14 Pase ahora mi señor delante de su siervo, y yo me iré poco a poco al paso del ganado que va delante de mí, y al paso de los niños, hasta que llegue a mi señor a Seir. 15 Y Esaú dijo: Dejaré ahora contigo de la gente que viene conmigo. Y Jacob dijo: ¿Para qué esto? Halle yo gracia en los ojos de mi señor. 16 Así volvió Esaú aquel día por su camino a Seir. 17 Y Jacob fue a Sucot, y edificó allí casa para sí, e hizo cabañas para su ganado; por tanto, llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Sucot.[a]

18 Después Jacob llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, cuando venía de Padan-aram; y acampó delante de la ciudad. 19 Y compró una parte del campo,(A) donde plantó su tienda, de mano de los hijos de Hamor padre de Siquem, por cien monedas.[b] 20 Y erigió allí un altar, y lo llamó El-Elohe-Israel.[c]

Esau forgives Jacob

33 Jacob looked up and saw Esau approaching with four hundred men. Jacob divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two women servants. 2 He put the servants and their children first, Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 He himself went in front of them and bowed to the ground seven times as he was approaching his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet him, threw his arms around his neck, kissed him, and they wept. 5 Esau looked up and saw the women and children and said, “Who are these with you?”

Jacob said, “The children that God generously gave your servant.” 6 The women servants and their children came forward and bowed down. 7 Then Leah and her servants also came forward and bowed, and afterward Joseph and Rachel came forward and bowed.

8 Esau said, “What’s the meaning of this entire group of animals that I met?”

Jacob said, “To ask for my master’s kindness.”

9 Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what’s yours.”

10 Jacob said, “No, please, do me the kindness of accepting my gift. Seeing your face is like seeing God’s face, since you’ve accepted me so warmly. 11 Take this present that I’ve brought because God has been generous to me, and I have everything I need.” So Jacob persuaded him, and he took it.

12 Esau said, “Let’s break camp and set out, and I’ll go with you.”

13 But Jacob said to him, “My master knows that the children aren’t strong and that I am responsible for the nursing flocks and cattle. If I push them hard for even one day, all of the flocks will die. 14 My master, go on ahead of your servant, but I’ve got to take it easy, going only as fast as the animals in front of me and the children are able to go, until I meet you in Seir.”

15 Esau said, “Let me leave some of my people with you.”

But Jacob said, “Why should you do this since my master has already been so kind to me?” 16 That day Esau returned on the road to Seir, 17 but Jacob traveled to Succoth. He built a house for himself but made temporary shelters for his animals; therefore, he named the place Succoth.[a]

Dinah and the conflict at Shechem

18 Jacob arrived safely at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan on his trip from Paddan-aram, and he camped in front of the city. 19 He bought the section of the field where he pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred qesitahs.[b] 20 Then he set up an altar there and named it El Elohe Israel.[c]

Jacob Meets Esau

33 Then Jacob raised his eyes and looked, and behold, (A)Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children [a]among Leah and Rachel, and the two slave women. 2 He put the slave women and their children [b]in front, and Leah and her children [c]next, and Rachel and Joseph [d]last. 3 But he himself passed on ahead of them and (B)bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

4 Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and (C)fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5 He raised his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, “[e]Who are these with you?” So he said, “(D)The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” 6 Then the slave women came forward [f]with their children, and they bowed down. 7 And Leah likewise came forward with her children, and they bowed down; and afterward Joseph came forward with Rachel, and they bowed down. 8 And he said, “What do you mean by (E)all this company which I have met?” And he said, “(F)To find favor in the sight of my lord.” 9 But Esau said, “(G)I have plenty, my brother; let what you have be your own.” 10 Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then accept my gift from my hand, [g]for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably. 11 Please accept my [h](H)gift which has been brought to you, (I)because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have [i]plenty.” So he urged him, and he accepted it.

12 Then [j]Esau said, “Let’s journey on and go, and I will go ahead of you.” 13 But he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail and that the flocks and herds that are nursing are [k]a matter of concern to me. And if they are driven hard just one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Please let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will proceed at my leisure, at the pace of the cattle that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at (J)Seir.”

15 Then Esau said, “Please let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “[l]What need is there? (K)Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 But Jacob journeyed to [m](L)Succoth, and built for himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the place is named Succoth.

Jacob Settles in Shechem

18 Now Jacob came safely to the city of (M)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from (N)Paddan-aram, and camped before the city. 19 (O)He bought the plot of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred [n]pieces of money. 20 Then he erected there an altar and called it [o]El-Elohe-Israel.
