Encuentro de Jacob con Esaú
33 Cuando Jacob alzó la vista y vio que Esaú se acercaba con cuatrocientos hombres, repartió a los niños entre Lea, Raquel y las dos esclavas. 2 Al frente de todos colocó a las criadas con sus hijos, luego a Lea con sus hijos y, por último, a Raquel con José. 3 Jacob, por su parte, se adelantó a ellos, postrándose en tierra siete veces mientras se iba acercando a su hermano.
4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro y, echándole los brazos al cuello, lo abrazó y lo besó. Entonces los dos se pusieron a llorar. 5 Luego Esaú alzó la vista y, al ver a las mujeres y a los niños, preguntó:
—¿Quiénes son estos que te acompañan?
—Son los hijos que Dios ha concedido a tu siervo —respondió Jacob.
6 Las esclavas y sus hijos se acercaron y se postraron ante Esaú. 7 Luego, Lea y sus hijos hicieron lo mismo y por último también se postraron José y Raquel.
8 —¿Qué significan todas estas manadas que han salido a mi encuentro? —preguntó Esaú.
—Intentaba que me trataras bien, mi señor —contestó Jacob.
9 —Hermano mío —repuso Esaú—, ya tengo más que suficiente. Quédate con lo que te pertenece.
10 —No, por favor —insistió Jacob—; si he logrado que me trates bien, acepta este presente que te ofrezco. Ya que me has recibido tan bien, ¡ver tu rostro es como ver a Dios mismo! 11 Acéptame el regalo que te he traído. Dios ha sido muy bueno conmigo y tengo más de lo que necesito. Fue tanta la insistencia de Jacob que, finalmente, Esaú aceptó.
12 Más tarde, Esaú le dijo:
—Sigamos nuestro viaje, yo te acompañaré.
13 Pero Jacob se disculpó:
—Mi hermano y señor debe saber que los niños son todavía muy débiles, y que las ovejas y las vacas acaban de tener cría, y debo cuidarlas. Si les exijo demasiado, en un solo día se me puede morir todo el rebaño. 14 Es mejor que mi señor se adelante a su siervo, que yo seguiré al paso de la manada y de los niños, hasta que nos encontremos en Seír.
15 —Está bien —accedió Esaú—, pero permíteme dejarte algunos de mis hombres para que te acompañen.
—¿Para qué te vas a molestar? —contestó Jacob—. Lo importante es que me has tratado bien.
16 Aquel mismo día, Esaú regresó a Seír. 17 Jacob, en cambio, se fue hacia Sucot, y allí se hizo una casa para él y cobertizos para su ganado. Por eso a ese lugar se le llamó Sucot.[a]
18 Cuando Jacob volvió de Padán Aram,[b] llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquén, en Canaán, y acampó frente a ella. 19 Luego, por cien piezas de plata[c] les compró una parcela a los hijos de Jamor, el padre de Siquén, y allí instaló su tienda de campaña. 20 También construyó un altar y lo llamó El Elohé Israel.[d]

33 Cuando Jacob vio que Esaú venía acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres, repartió a los niños entre Lía, Raquel y las dos esclavas. 2 Colocó primero a las esclavas con sus hijos, luego a Lía con sus hijos, y por último a Raquel y José. 3 Luego se adelantó a ellos, y se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente siete veces, hasta que estuvo cerca de su hermano. 4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro y, echándole los brazos al cuello, lo abrazó y lo besó. Los dos lloraron. 5 Después Esaú se fijó en las mujeres y en los niños, y preguntó:
—Y éstos, ¿quiénes son?
—Son los hijos que Dios le ha dado a tu servidor —dijo Jacob.
6 Entonces las esclavas y sus hijos se acercaron y se inclinaron hasta tocar el suelo con la frente; 7 luego se acercaron Lía y sus hijos, y se inclinaron de la misma manera, y por último se acercaron José y Raquel, y también se inclinaron. 8 De pronto Esaú preguntó:
—¿Qué piensas hacer con todas esas manadas que he venido encontrando?
—Ganarme tu buena voluntad —respondió Jacob.
9 —No, hermano mío; yo tengo suficiente. Quédate con lo que es tuyo —dijo Esaú.
10 Pero Jacob insistió:
—No, por favor. Si me he ganado tu buena voluntad, acepta este regalo, pues verte en persona es como ver a Dios mismo, ya que tú me has recibido muy bien. 11 Te ruego que aceptes el regalo que te he traído, pues Dios me ha hecho rico, y nada me falta.
Tanto insistió Jacob, que al fin Esaú aceptó el regalo; 12 pero dijo:
—Bueno, vámonos de aquí. Yo iré delante de ti.
13 Y Jacob respondió:
—Querido hermano, tú sabes que los niños son débiles, y que debo pensar en las ovejas y en las vacas con cría; si se les cansa, en un solo día pueden morir todas las ovejas. 14 Es mejor que tú te adelantes a este servidor tuyo; yo iré poco a poco, al paso de los animales que van delante de mí, y al paso de los niños, hasta reunirme contigo en Seír.
15 —Bueno —dijo Esaú—, permíteme dejarte algunos hombres de los que vienen conmigo.
Pero Jacob contestó:
—¡No, por favor! ¿Para qué te molestas?
16 Ese mismo día, Esaú regresó a Seír. 17 Jacob, en cambio, se fue a Sucot, y allí hizo una casa para él y unas enramadas para sus animales. Por eso, a aquel lugar lo llamó Sucot.
18 Cuando Jacob vino de Padán-aram, llegó sano y salvo a Canaán y acampó frente a la ciudad de Siquem. 19 Por cien monedas compró un terreno a los hijos de Hamor, el padre de Siquem, y allí puso su campamento. 20 Después construyó un altar, y lo llamó El-elohé-israel.

33 Iacov a ridicat ochii şi s-a uitat, şi iată că Esau(A) venea cu patru sute de oameni. Atunci a împărţit copiii între Lea, Rahela şi cele două roabe. 2 A pus în frunte roabele cu copiii lor, apoi pe Lea cu copiii ei şi la urmă pe Rahela cu Iosif. 3 El însuşi a trecut înaintea lor şi s-a aruncat(B) cu faţa la pământ de şapte ori, până ce s-a apropiat de tot de fratele său. 4 Esau(C) a alergat înaintea lui, l-a îmbrăţişat, i s-a aruncat(D) pe grumaz şi l-a sărutat. Şi au plâns. 5 Esau, ridicând ochii, a văzut femeile şi copiii şi a zis: „Cine sunt aceia?” Şi Iacov a răspuns: „Sunt copiii(E) pe care i-a dat Dumnezeu robului tău.” 6 Roabele s-au apropiat cu copiii lor şi s-au aruncat cu faţa la pământ. 7 Lea şi copiii ei, de asemenea, s-au apropiat şi s-au aruncat cu faţa la pământ. În urmă s-au apropiat Iosif şi Rahela şi s-au aruncat cu faţa la pământ. 8 Esau a zis: „Ce ai de gând să faci cu toată(F) tabăra aceea pe care am întâlnit-o?” Şi Iacov a răspuns: „Voiesc să capăt(G) trecere cu ea înaintea domnului meu.” 9 Esau a zis: „Eu am din belşug; păstrează, frate, ce este al tău.” 10 Şi Iacov a răspuns: „Nu, te rog, dacă am căpătat trecere înaintea ta, primeşte darul acesta din mâna mea, căci(H) m-am uitat la faţa ta cum se uită cineva la Faţa lui Dumnezeu, şi tu m-ai primit cu bunăvoinţă. 11 Primeşte deci(I) darul meu, care ţi-a fost adus, fiindcă Dumnezeu m-a umplut de bunătăţi şi am de toate.” Astfel a stăruit(J) de el, şi Esau a primit. 12 Esau a zis: „Haidem să plecăm şi să pornim la drum; eu voi merge înaintea ta.” 13 Iacov i-a răspuns: „Domnul meu vede că copiii sunt micşori şi am oi şi vaci fătate; dacă le-am sili la drum o singură zi, toată turma va pieri. 14 Domnul meu s-o ia înaintea robului său, şi eu voi veni încet pe urmă, la pas cu turma, care va merge înaintea mea, şi la pas cu copiii, până voi ajunge la domnul meu în Seir(K).” 15 Esau a zis: „Vreau să las cu tine măcar o parte din oamenii mei.” Şi Iacov a răspuns: „Pentru ce aceasta? Mi-ajunge să capăt trecere(L) înaintea ta, domnul meu!” 16 În aceeaşi zi, Esau a luat drumul înapoi la Seir.
Iacov se aşază la Sihem
17 Iacov a plecat mai departe la Sucot(M). Şi-a zidit o casă şi a făcut colibe pentru turme. De aceea s-a dat locului aceluia numele Sucot(N) (Colibe). 18 La întoarcerea lui din Padan-Aram, Iacov a ajuns cu bine în cetatea Sihem(O), în ţara Canaan, şi a tăbărât înaintea cetăţii. 19 Partea de ogor pe care îşi întinsese cortul a cumpărat-o(P) de la fiii lui Hamor, tatăl lui Sihem, cu o sută de chesita[a]. 20 Şi acolo a ridicat un altar, pe care l-a numit(Q) El-Elohe-Israel (Domnul este Dumnezeul lui Israel).

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men;(A) so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.(B) 2 He put the female servants and their children(C) in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph(D) in the rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground(E) seven times(F) as he approached his brother.
4 But Esau(G) ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.(H) And they wept.(I) 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.
Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.(J)”
6 Then the female servants and their children(K) approached and bowed down.(L) 7 Next, Leah and her children(M) came and bowed down.(N) Last of all came Joseph and Rachel,(O) and they too bowed down.
8 Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”(P)
“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,”(Q) he said.
9 But Esau said, “I already have plenty,(R) my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes,(S) accept this gift(T) from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God,(U) now that you have received me favorably.(V) 11 Please accept the present(W) that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me(X) and I have all I need.”(Y) And because Jacob insisted,(Z) Esau accepted it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord(AA) knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young.(AB) If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds(AC) before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.(AD)”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”(AE)
16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.(AF) 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(AG) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[a]
18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[b](AH) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(AI) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(AJ) the father of Shechem,(AK) the plot of ground(AL) where he pitched his tent.(AM) 20 There he set up an altar(AN) and called it El Elohe Israel.[d]

33 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
3 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
5 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.
6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
7 And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
8 And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
9 And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.
10 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
11 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
12 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
13 And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
15 And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
16 So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.
19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.
20 And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.
