Jacob huye de Labán

31 Pero Jacob se enteró de que los hijos de Labán andaban diciendo: «Jacob se ha ido apoderando de todo lo que le pertenecía a nuestro padre, y se ha enriquecido a costa suya». 2 También notó que Labán ya no lo trataba como antes. 3 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Jacob: «Vuélvete a la tierra de tus padres, donde están tus parientes, que yo estaré contigo».

4 Jacob mandó llamar a Raquel y a Lea al campo donde estaba el rebaño, 5 y les dijo:

―Me he dado cuenta de que vuestro padre ya no me trata como antes. ¡Pero el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo! 6 Vosotras sabéis muy bien que yo he trabajado para vuestro padre Labán con todas mis fuerzas. 7 No obstante, él me ha engañado y me ha cambiado el salario muchas veces.[a] Pero Dios no le ha permitido causarme ningún daño. 8 Si él acordaba conmigo: “Los animales manchados serán tu salario”, todas las hembras tenían crías manchadas; y, si él acordaba: “Los animales rayados serán tu salario”, todas las hembras tenían crías rayadas. 9 Así Dios le ha quitado el ganado a vuestro padre, y me lo ha dado a mí.

10 »En cierta ocasión, durante la época en que los animales estaban en celo, tuve un sueño. En ese sueño veía que los chivos que cubrían a las cabras eran rayados, manchados o moteados. 11 En ese mismo sueño, el ángel de Dios me llamó: “¡Jacob!” Y yo le respondí: “Aquí estoy”. 12 Entonces él me dijo: “Fíjate bien, y te darás cuenta de que todos los chivos que cubren a las cabras son rayados, manchados o moteados. Yo he visto todo lo que te ha hecho Labán. 13 Yo soy el Dios de Betel, donde ungiste una estela y me hiciste una promesa. Vete ahora de esta tierra, y vuelve a la tierra de tu origen”».

14 Raquel y Lea le respondieron:

―Ya no tenemos ninguna parte ni herencia en la casa de nuestro padre. 15 Al contrario, nos ha tratado como si fuéramos extranjeras. Nos ha vendido, y se ha gastado todo lo que recibió por nosotras. 16 Lo cierto es que toda la riqueza que Dios le ha quitado a nuestro padre es nuestra y de nuestros hijos. Por eso, haz ahora todo lo que Dios te ha ordenado.

17 Entonces Jacob se preparó y montó a sus hijos y a sus esposas en los camellos, 18 puso en marcha todo su ganado, junto con todos los bienes que había acumulado en Padán Aram,[b] y se dirigió hacia la tierra de Canaán, donde vivía su padre Isaac.

19 Mientras Labán estaba ausente esquilando sus ovejas, Raquel aprovechó el momento para robar los ídolos familiares. 20 Fue así como Jacob engañó a Labán el arameo y huyó sin decirle nada. 21 Jacob se escapó con todo lo que tenía. Una vez que cruzó el río Éufrates, se encaminó hacia la región montañosa de Galaad.

Labán persigue a Jacob

22 Al tercer día informaron a Labán de que Jacob había huido. 23 Entonces Labán reunió a sus parientes y lo persiguió durante siete días, hasta que lo alcanzó en los montes de Galaad. 24 Pero esa misma noche Dios se le apareció en un sueño a Labán el arameo y le dijo: «¡Cuidado con amenazar a Jacob!»

25 Labán alcanzó a Jacob en los montes de Galaad, donde este había acampado. También Labán acampó allí, junto con sus parientes, 26 y le reclamó a Jacob:

―¿Qué has hecho? ¡Me has engañado, y te has llevado a mis hijas como si fueran prisioneras de guerra! 27 ¿Por qué has huido en secreto, con engaños y sin decirme nada? Yo te habría despedido con alegría, y con música de tambores y de arpa. 28 Ni siquiera me dejaste besar a mis hijas y a mis nietos. ¡Te has comportado como un necio! 29 Mi poder es más que suficiente para haceros daño, pero anoche el Dios de tu padre me habló y me dijo: “¡Cuidado con amenazar a Jacob!” 30 Ahora bien, entiendo que hayas querido irte porque añoras la casa de tu padre, pero ¿por qué me robaste mis dioses?

31 Jacob le respondió:

―La verdad es que me entró mucho miedo, porque pensé que podrías quitarme a tus hijas por la fuerza. 32 Pero, si encuentras tus dioses en poder de alguno de los que están aquí, tal persona no quedará con vida. Pongo a nuestros parientes como testigos: busca lo que sea tuyo y llévatelo.

Pero Jacob no sabía que Raquel había robado los ídolos de Labán, 33 así que Labán entró en la tienda de Jacob, luego en la de Lea y en la de las dos criadas, pero no encontró lo que buscaba. Cuando salió de la tienda de Lea, entró en la de Raquel. 34 Pero Raquel, después de tomar los ídolos y esconderlos bajo la montura del camello, se sentó sobre ellos. Labán los buscó por toda la tienda, pero no los encontró. 35 Entonces Raquel le dijo a su padre:

―Por favor, no se enoje mi padre si no puedo levantarme delante de ti, pero es que estoy en mi período de menstruación.

Labán buscó los ídolos, pero no logró encontrarlos.

36 Entonces Jacob se enojó con Labán e, indignado, le recriminó:

―¿Qué crimen o pecado he cometido, para que me acoses de esta manera? 37 Ya has registrado todas mis cosas, ¿y acaso has encontrado algo que te pertenezca? Si algo has encontrado, ponlo aquí, frente a nuestros parientes, y que ellos determinen quién de los dos tiene la razón. 38 Durante los veinte años que estuve contigo, nunca abortaron tus ovejas ni tus cabras, ni jamás me comí un carnero de tus rebaños. 39 Nunca te traje un animal despedazado por las fieras, ya que yo mismo me hacía cargo de esa pérdida. Además, lo que robaban de día o de noche, tú me lo reclamabas. 40 De día me consumía el calor, y de noche me moría de frío, y ni dormir podía. 41 De los veinte años que estuve en tu casa, catorce te serví por tus dos hijas, y seis por tu ganado, y muchas veces[c] me cambiaste el salario. 42 Si no hubiera estado conmigo el Dios de mi padre, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios a quien Isaac temía, seguramente me habrías despedido con las manos vacías. Pero Dios vio mi aflicción y el trabajo de mis manos, y anoche me hizo justicia.

43 Labán le replicó a Jacob:

―Estas mujeres son mis hijas, y estos muchachos son mis nietos; mías también son las ovejas; todo lo que ves me pertenece. Pero ¿qué podría hacerles ahora a mis hijas y a mis nietos? 44 Hagamos un pacto tú y yo, y que ese pacto nos sirva como testimonio.

45 Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra, la levantó como una estela 46 y les dijo a sus parientes:

―¡Juntad piedras!

Ellos juntaron piedras, las amontonaron y comieron allí, junto al montón de piedras. 47 A ese lugar Labán le puso por nombre Yegar Saduta, mientras que Jacob lo llamó Galaad.[d]

48 ―Este montón de piedras —declaró Labán— nos servirá de testimonio.

Por eso se le llamó Galaad a ese lugar, 49 y también se le llamó Mizpa, porque Labán juró:

―Que el Señor nos vigile cuando ya estemos lejos el uno del otro. 50 Si tú maltratas a mis hijas, o tomas otras mujeres que no sean ellas, recuerda que Dios es nuestro testigo, aunque no haya ningún otro testigo entre nosotros. 51 Mira este montón de piedras y la estela que he levantado entre nosotros —señaló Labán—. 52 Ambos serán testigos de que ni tú ni yo cruzaremos esta línea con el propósito de hacernos daño. 53 ¡Que el Dios de Abraham y el Dios de Najor sea nuestro juez!

Entonces Jacob juró por el Dios a quien temía su padre Isaac. 54 Luego ofreció un sacrificio en lo alto de un monte, e invitó a sus parientes a participar en la comida. Después de que todos comieron, pasaron la noche allí.

55 A la madrugada del día siguiente, Labán se levantó, besó y bendijo a sus nietos y a sus hijas, y regresó a su casa.

Jacob Flees from Laban

31 Now Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s he has acquired all this (A)wealth.” 2 And Jacob saw the (B)countenance of Laban, and indeed it was not (C)favorable toward him as before. 3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, (D)“Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will (E)be with you.”

4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock, 5 and said to them, (F)“I see your father’s [a]countenance, that it is not favorable toward me as before; but the God of my father (G)has been with me. 6 And (H)you know that with all my might I have served your father. 7 Yet your father has deceived me and (I)changed my wages (J)ten times, but God (K)did not allow him to hurt me. 8 If he said thus: (L)‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore speckled. And if he said thus: ‘The streaked shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked. 9 So God has (M)taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me.

10 “And it happened, at the time when the flocks conceived, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the flocks were streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted. 11 Then (N)the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, ‘Jacob.’ And I said, ‘Here I am.’ 12 And He said, ‘Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for (O)I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel, (P)where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now (Q)arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’ ”

14 Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, (R)“Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house? 15 Are we not considered strangers by him? For (S)he has sold us, and also completely consumed our money. 16 For all these riches which God has taken from our father are really ours and our children’s; now then, whatever God has said to you, do it.”

17 Then Jacob rose and set his sons and his wives on camels. 18 And he carried away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained, his acquired livestock which he had gained in Padan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of (T)Canaan. 19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the (U)household[b] idols that were her father’s. 20 And Jacob stole away, unknown to Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee. 21 So he fled with all that he had. He arose and crossed the river, and (V)headed[c] toward the mountains of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 And Laban was told on the third day that Jacob had fled. 23 Then he took (W)his brethren with him and pursued him for seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the mountains of Gilead. 24 But God (X)had come to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, “Be careful that you (Y)speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.”

25 So Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountains, and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mountains of Gilead.

26 And Laban said to Jacob: “What have you done, that you have stolen away unknown to me, and (Z)carried away my daughters like captives taken with the sword? 27 Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and not tell me; for I might have sent you away with joy and songs, with timbrel and harp? 28 And you did not allow me (AA)to kiss my sons and my daughters. Now (AB)you have done foolishly in so doing. 29 It is in my power to do you harm, but the (AC)God of your father spoke to me (AD)last night, saying, ‘Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.’ 30 And now you have surely gone because you greatly long for your father’s house, but why did you (AE)steal my gods?”

31 Then Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was (AF)afraid, for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.’ 32 With whomever you find your gods, (AG)do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

33 And Laban went into Jacob’s tent, into Leah’s tent, and into the two maids’ tents, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the [d]household idols, put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. And Laban [e]searched all about the tent but did not find them. 35 And she said to her father, “Let it not displease my lord that I cannot (AH)rise before you, for the manner of women is with me.” And he searched but did not find the [f]household idols.

36 Then Jacob was angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban: “What is my [g]trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me? 37 Although you have searched all my things, what part of your household things have you found? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both! 38 These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock. 39 (AI)That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it. (AJ)You required it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 There I was! In the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes. 41 Thus I have been in your house twenty years; I (AK)served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and (AL)you have changed my wages ten times. 42 (AM)Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham and (AN)the Fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. (AO)God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and (AP)rebuked you last night.”

Laban’s Covenant with Jacob

43 And Laban answered and said to Jacob, “These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and this flock is my flock; all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne? 44 Now therefore, come, (AQ)let us make a [h]covenant, (AR)you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”

45 So Jacob (AS)took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 Then Jacob said to his brethren, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap. 47 Laban called it [i]Jegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it [j]Galeed. 48 And Laban said, (AT)“This heap is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore its name was called Galeed, 49 also (AU)Mizpah,[k] because he said, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another. 50 If you afflict my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us—see, God is witness between you and me!”

51 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Here is this heap and here is this pillar, which I have placed between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to you, and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their father (AV)judge between us.” And Jacob (AW)swore by (AX)the [l]Fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his brethren to eat bread. And they ate bread and stayed all night on the mountain. 55 And early in the morning Laban arose, and (AY)kissed his sons and daughters and (AZ)blessed them. Then Laban departed and (BA)returned to his place.

Jacob Flees From Laban

31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons(A) were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”(B) 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.(C)

3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back(D) to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”(E)

4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s(F) attitude toward me is not what it was before,(G) but the God of my father has been with me.(H) 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,(I) 7 yet your father has cheated(J) me by changing my wages(K) ten times.(L) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.(M) 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’(N) then all the flocks bore streaked young. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock(O) and has given them to me.(P)

10 “In breeding season I once had a dream(Q) in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God(R) said to me in the dream,(S) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’(T) 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,(U) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.(V) 13 I am the God of Bethel,(W) where you anointed a pillar(X) and where you made a vow(Y) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.(Z)’”

14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share(AA) in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners?(AB) Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.(AC) 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children.(AD) So do whatever God has told you.”

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(AE) on camels,(AF) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(AG) in Paddan Aram,[a](AH) to go to his father Isaac(AI) in the land of Canaan.(AJ)

19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(AK) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(AL) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(AM) Laban the Aramean(AN) by not telling him he was running away.(AO) 21 So he fled(AP) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(AQ) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(AR)

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 On the third day(AS) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(AT) 23 Taking his relatives(AU) with him(AV), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(AW) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(AX) in a dream at night and said to him,(AY) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(AZ)

25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(BA) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(BB) You’ve deceived me,(BC) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(BD) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(BE) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(BF) and harps?(BG) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(BH) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(BI) but last night the God of your father(BJ) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(BK) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(BL) But why did you steal(BM) my gods?(BN)”

31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(BO) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(BP) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(BQ)

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(BR) and into the tent of the two female servants,(BS) but he found nothing.(BT) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(BU) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(BV) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(BW) through everything in the tent but found nothing.

35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(BX) I’m having my period.(BY)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(BZ)

36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(CA) you that you hunt me down?(CB) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(CC) Put it here in front of your relatives(CD) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(CE)

38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(CF) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(CG) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(CH) by day or night.(CI) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(CJ) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(CK) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(CL) and six years for your flocks,(CM) and you changed my wages(CN) ten times.(CO) 42 If the God of my father,(CP) the God of Abraham(CQ) and the Fear of Isaac,(CR) had not been with me,(CS) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(CT) and last night he rebuked you.(CU)”

43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(CV) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(CW) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(CX)

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(CY) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(CZ) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[b](DA)

48 Laban said, “This heap(DB) is a witness between you and me today.”(DC) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[c](DD) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(DE) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(DF) between you and me.”(DG)

51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(DH) and here is this pillar(DI) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(DJ) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(DK) and pillar to my side to harm me.(DL) 53 May the God of Abraham(DM) and the God of Nahor,(DN) the God of their father, judge between us.”(DO)

So Jacob took an oath(DP) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(DQ) 54 He offered a sacrifice(DR) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(DS) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(DT) and blessed(DU) them. Then he left and returned home.[d](DV)

31 Or Giacobbe udì le parole dei figli di Labano, che dicevano: «Giacobbe si è preso tutto ciò che era di nostro padre; e con quello che era di nostro padre si è fatto tutta questa ricchezza».

2 Giacobbe notò pure il volto di Labano; ed ecco, verso di lui non era piú quello di prima.

3 Poi l'Eterno disse a Giacobbe: «Torna al paese dei tuoi padri e al tuo parentado, e io sarò con te.

4 Allora Giacobbe mandò a chiamare Rachele e Lea, perché venissero nei campi, presso il suo gregge,

5 e disse loro: Io vedo che il volto di vostro padre verso di me non è piú quello di prima; ma il DIO di mio padre è stato con me.

6 E voi sapete che io ho servito il padre vostro con tutta la mia forza,

7 mentre vostro padre mi ha ingannato e ha mutato il mio salario dieci volte; ma DIO non gli ha permesso di farmi del male.

8 Se egli diceva: «I capi chiazzati saranno il tuo salario», tutto il gregge figliava agnelli chiazzati; e se diceva: "I capi striati saranno il tuo salario", tutto il gregge figliava agnelli striati.

9 Così DIO ha tolto il bestiame a vostro padre e lo ha dato a me.

10 Una volta, al tempo che le greggi entravano in calore, io alzai gli occhi e vidi in sogno che i capri che montavano le femmine erano striati, chiazzati e screziati.

11 E l'angelo di DIO mi disse in sogno: "Giacobbe!". Io risposi: "Eccomi!".

12 Egli allora disse: "Alza ora gli occhi e guarda; tutti i montoni che montano le femmine sono striati, chiazzati e screziati, perché ho veduto tutto quello che Labano ti fa.

13 Io sono il DIO di Bethel, dove tu ungesti una stele e mi facesti un voto. Ora alzati, lascia questo paese e torna al tuo paese natio"».

14 Rachele e Lea risposero e gli dissero: «Abbiamo noi forse ancora una parte e un'eredità in casa di nostro padre?

15 Non ci ha egli trattate come straniere, per il fatto che egli ci ha vendute e ha inoltre mangiato il nostro denaro?

16 Tutte le ricchezze che DIO ha tolto a nostro padre sono nostre e dei nostri figli or dunque fa' tutto ciò che DIO ti ha detto».

17 Allora Giacobbe si alzò e mise i suoi figli e le sue mogli sui cammelli,

18 e condusse via tutto il suo bestiame, prendendo con sé tutte le sostanze che aveva acquistato, il bestiame che gli apparteneva e che aveva acquistato in Paddan-Aram, per andare da Isacco suo padre, nel paese di Canaan.

19 Mentre Labano era andato a tosare le sue pecore, Rachele rubò gl'idoli di suo padre.

20 E Giacobbe si allontanò furtivamente da Labano, l'Arameo, senza dirgli che intendeva fuggire.

21 Così egli fuggì con tutto ciò che aveva; si levò, passò il fiume e si diresse verso il monte di Galaad.

22 Al terzo giorno fu riferito a Labano che Giacobbe era fuggito.

23 Allora egli prese con sé i suoi fratelli, lo insegui per sette giornate di cammino e lo raggiunse al monte di Galaad.

24 Ma DIO venne da Labano, L'Arameo, in un sogno della notte, e gli disse: «Guardati dal parlare a Giacobbe, né in bene né in male».

25 Labano raggiunse dunque Giacobbe. Ora Giacobbe aveva piantato la sua tenda sul monte; e anche Labano e i suoi fratelli avevano piantato le loro sul monte di Galaad.

26 Allora Labano disse a Giacobbe: «Che cosa hai fatto ingannandomi in questo modo e conducendo via le mie figlie come prigioniere di guerra?

27 Perché sei fuggito di nascosto e ti sei allontanato da me furtivamente, senza neppure avvertirmi? Io ti avrei accomiatato con gioia e con canti, a suon di tamburello e di cetra.

28 E non mi hai permesso di baciare i miei figli e le mie figlie! Tu hai agito stoltamente.

29 Ora è in mio potere di farvi del male; ma il DIO di tuo padre mi parlò la notte scorsa, dicendo: "Guardati dal parlare a Giacobbe né in bene né in male".

30 Certamente te ne sei andato, perché desideravi ardentemente di ritornare alla casa di tuo padre; ma perché hai rubato i miei dei?».

31 Allora Giacobbe rispose a Labano: «Io avevo paura, perché pensavo che tu mi avresti potuto togliere con la Forza le tue figlie.

32 Ma chiunque sia colui presso il quale troverai i tuoi dei, egli deve morire in presenza dei nostri fratelli; ricerca tu stesso ciò che ti appartiene presso di me e prenditelo!». Giacobbe non sapeva che li aveva rubati Rachele.

33 Labano dunque entrò nella tenda di Giacobbe, nella tenda di Lea e nella tenda delle due serve, ma non trovò nulla. Uscì poi dalla tenda di Lea ed entrò nella tenda di Rachele.

34 Or Rachele aveva preso gl'idoli e li aveva messi nel basto del cammello, poi vi si era seduta sopra. Labano frugò tutta la tenda, ma non trovò nulla.

35 Ed ella disse a suo padre: «Non si adiri il mio signore, se io non posso alzarmi davanti a te, perché ho i soliti ricorsi delle donne». Così egli cercò ma non trovò gl'idoli.

36 Allora Giacobbe si adirò e contese con Labano; e Giacobbe rispose e disse a Labano: «Qual è la mia colpa, qual è il mio peccato, perché tu mi abbia inseguito con tanta rabbia?»

37 Tu hai frugato in tutte le mie cose. Che cosa hai trovato di tutto ciò che appartiene alla tua casa? Mettilo qui davanti ai miei fratelli e ai tuoi fratelli e siano essi a decidere fra noi due!

38 Sono stato con te vent'anni; le tue pecore e le tue capre non hanno abortito e io non ho mangiato i montoni del tuo gregge.

39 Io non ti ho mai portato gli animali lacerati dalle fiere; ne ho subita la perdita io stesso; tu reclamavi da me ciò che era stato rubato di giorno o rubato di notte.

40 Questa era la mia sorte: di giorno mi consumava il caldo e il freddo intenso di notte, e il sonno fuggiva dai miei occhi.

41 Sono stato vent'anni in casa tua; ti ho servito quattordici anni per le tue due figlie e sei anni per il tuo gregge, tu hai mutato il mio salario dieci volte.

42 Se il DIO di mio padre, il DIO di Abrahamo e il Terrore di Isacco non fosse stato a mio favore tu mi avresti certamente rimandato via a mani vuote DIO ha veduto la mia afflizione e la fatica delle mie mani e la notte scorsa ha pronunziato la sua sentenza».

43 Allora Labano rispose e disse: «Queste figlie sono mie figlie, questi figli sono miei figli, queste greggi sono mie greggi, e tutto quel che vedi è mio. Ma che posso io fare oggi a queste mie figlie o ai loro figli che esse hanno partorito?

44 Or dunque vieni, facciamo un patto fra me e te, e serva esso di testimonianza fra me e te».

45 Allora Giacobbe prese una pietra e la eresse come una stele.

46 Poi Giacobbe disse ai suoi fratelli: «Raccogliete delle pietre». Ed essi presero delle pietre e ne fecero un mucchio, e presso il mucchio mangiarono.

47 Labano chiamò quel mucchio Jegar-Sahadutha, mentre Giacobbe lo chiamò Galed.

48 E Labano disse: «Oggi questo mucchio è una testimonianza fra me e te». Perciò fu chiamato Galed,

49 e anche Mitspah, perché Labano disse: «L'Eterno tenga l'occhio su me e su te quando saremo nell'impossibilità di vederci l'un l'altro.

50 Se tu maltratti le mie figlie o se prendi altre mogli oltre le mie figlie, anche se non c'è alcun uomo con noi, ricordati che DIO è testimone fra me e te».

51 Labano disse ancora a Giacobbe: «Ecco questo mucchio di pietre, ed ecco la stele che io ho eretto fra me e te.

52 Sia questo mucchio un testimone e sia questa stele un testimone che io non oltrepasserò questo mucchio per venire a far del male a te, e che tu non oltrepasserai questo mucchio e questa stele per far del male a me.

53 Il DIO di Abrahamo e il DIO di Nahor, il DIO del loro padre, sia giudice fra noi!». E Giacobbe giurò per il Terrore di Isacco suo padre.

54 Poi Giacobbe offrì un sacrificio sul monte e invitò i suoi fratelli a mangiare del pane. Ed essi mangiarono del pane e passarono la notte sul monte.

55 Labano si alzò al mattino presto, baciò i suoi figli e le sue figlie e li benedisse. Poi Labano partì e tornò a casa sua.
