30 Cuando Raquel se dio cuenta de que no le podía dar hijos a Jacob, tuvo envidia de su hermana y dijo a Jacob:

—¡Dame hijos! Si no me los das, ¡me muero!

2 Pero Jacob se enojó muchísimo con ella y dijo:

—¿Acaso crees que soy Dios? ¡Es él quien te ha hecho estéril!

3 —Aquí tienes a mi criada Bilhá —propuso Raquel—. Acuéstate con ella. Así ella dará a luz sobre mis rodillas y por medio de ella también yo podré formar una familia.

4 Entonces Raquel dio a Jacob por mujer su criada Bilhá y Jacob se acostó con ella. 5 Bilhá quedó embarazada y dio un hijo a Jacob. 6 Y Raquel exclamó: «¡Dios me ha hecho justicia! ¡Escuchó mi plegaria y me ha dado un hijo!». Por eso Raquel le puso por nombre Dan.[a]

7 Después Bilhá, la criada de Raquel, quedó embarazada otra vez y dio a luz un segundo hijo de Jacob. 8 Y Raquel dijo: «He tenido una lucha muy grande con mi hermana, pero he vencido». Por eso Raquel lo llamó Neftalí.[b]

9 Lea, al ver que ya no podía tener hijos, tomó a su criada Zilpá y se la entregó a Jacob por mujer, 10 y esta dio a Jacob un hijo. 11 Entonces Lea exclamó: «¡Qué buena fortuna!». Por eso lo llamó Gad.[c]

12 Zilpá, la criada de Lea, dio un segundo hijo a Jacob. 13 Lea volvió a exclamar: «¡Qué feliz soy! Las mujeres me dirán que soy feliz». Por eso lo llamó Aser.[d]

14 Durante los días de la cosecha de trigo, Rubén salió al campo. Allí encontró unas frutas llamadas mandrágoras[e] y se las llevó a Lea, su madre. Entonces Raquel dijo a Lea:

—Por favor, dame algunas mandrágoras de las que te trajo tu hijo.

15 Pero Lea contestó:

—¿Te parece poco el haberme quitado a mi marido, que ahora quieres también quitarme las mandrágoras de mi hijo?

—Bueno —contestó Raquel—, te propongo que, a cambio de las mandrágoras de tu hijo, Jacob duerma contigo esta noche.

16 Al anochecer, cuando Jacob volvía del campo, Lea salió a su encuentro para decirle:

—Hoy te acostarás conmigo, porque te he alquilado a cambio de las mandrágoras de mi hijo.

Y Jacob durmió con ella esa noche.

17 Dios escuchó a Lea; ella quedó embarazada y dio a Jacob un quinto hijo. 18 Entonces dijo Lea: «Dios me ha recompensado, porque yo entregué mi criada a mi esposo». Por eso lo llamó Isacar.[f]

19 Lea quedó embarazada de nuevo y dio a Jacob un sexto hijo. 20 «Dios me ha favorecido con un buen regalo —dijo Lea—. Esta vez mi esposo me tratará con honor, porque le he dado seis hijos». Por eso lo llamó Zabulón.[g]

21 Luego Lea dio a luz una hija, a la cual llamó Dina.

22 Pero Dios también se acordó de Raquel; la escuchó y le quitó la esterilidad. 23 Fue así como ella quedó embarazada y dio a luz un hijo. Entonces exclamó: «Dios ha quitado mi desgracia». 24 Por eso lo llamó José[h] y dijo: «Quiera el Señor añadirme otro hijo».

Jacob se enriquece

25 Después de que Raquel dio a luz a José, Jacob dijo a Labán:

—Déjame regresar a mi hogar y a mi propia tierra. 26 Dame las mujeres por las que te he servido, también mis hijos y déjame ir. Tú bien sabes cómo he trabajado para ti.

27 Pero Labán contestó:

—Por favor, quédate. He sabido por un augurio que, gracias a ti, el Señor me ha bendecido.

28 Y le propuso:

—Fija tú mismo el salario que quieras ganar y yo te lo pagaré.

29 Jacob respondió:

—Tú bien sabes cómo he trabajado y cómo gracias a mis desvelos han mejorado tus animales. 30 Lo que tenías antes de mi venida, que era muy poco, se ha multiplicado enormemente. Gracias a mí, el Señor te ha bendecido. Ahora quiero hacer algo por mi propia familia.

31 —¿Cuánto quieres que te pague? —preguntó Labán.

—No tienes que pagarme nada —respondió Jacob—. Si aceptas lo que estoy por proponerte, seguiré cuidando tus ovejas. 32 Hoy, cuando pase yo con todo tu rebaño, tú irás apartando toda oveja manchada o moteada y todos los corderos negros, también todos los cabritos manchados o moteados. Ellos serán mi salario. 33 Así, el día de mañana, cuando vengas a controlar lo que he ganado, mi honradez responderá por mí: si encuentras alguna oveja o cabrito que no sea manchado o moteado, o algún cordero que no sea negro, será que te lo he robado.

34 —Está bien —acordó Labán—, acepto tu propuesta.

35 Ese mismo día Labán apartó todos los chivos rayados y moteados, todas las cabras manchadas y moteadas, todas las que tenían alguna mancha blanca y todos los corderos negros, y los puso al cuidado de sus hijos. 36 Después de eso, puso una distancia de tres días de viaje entre él y Jacob. Mientras tanto, Jacob seguía cuidando las otras ovejas de Labán.

37 Jacob cortó ramas verdes de álamo, de almendro y de castaño, y las peló de tal manera que quedaran franjas blancas al descubierto. 38 Luego tomó las ramas que había pelado y las puso en todos los abrevaderos para que el rebaño las tuviera enfrente cuando se acercara a beber agua. Cuando las ovejas estaban en celo y llegaban a los abrevaderos, 39 los machos se unían con las hembras frente a las ramas, y así tenían crías rayadas, moteadas o manchadas. 40 Entonces Jacob apartaba estos corderos y los ponía frente a los animales rayados y negros del rebaño de Labán. De esta manera logró crear su propio rebaño, diferente al de Labán. 41 Además, cuando las hembras más robustas estaban en celo, Jacob colocaba las ramas en los bebederos, frente a los animales, para que se unieran mirando hacia las ramas. 42 Pero cuando llegaban los animales más débiles, no colocaba las ramas. Así los animales débiles eran para Labán y los robustos eran para Jacob. 43 De esta manera Jacob prosperó muchísimo y llegó a tener muchos rebaños, criados y criadas, camellos y asnos.

30 Cuando Raquel vio que ella no podía darle hijos a Jacob, sintió envidia de su hermana Lía, y le dijo a su esposo:

—Dame hijos, porque si no, me voy a morir.

2 Pero Jacob se enojó con ella y le dijo:

—¿Acaso soy Dios? Él es quien no te deja tener hijos.

3 Entonces ella le dijo:

—Mira, toma a mi esclava Bilhá y únete con ella; y cuando ella tenga hijos, será como si yo misma los tuviera. Así podré tener hijos.

4 De esta manera Raquel le dio a Jacob su esclava Bilhá, para que fuera su concubina. Jacob se unió con Bilhá, 5 y ella le dio un hijo a Jacob. 6 Entonces Raquel dijo: «Este niño se va a llamar Dan, porque Dios oyó mi oración y me hizo justicia al darme un hijo.»

7 Después Bilhá le dio otro hijo a Jacob, 8 y Raquel dijo: «Este niño se va a llamar Neftalí, porque he luchado mucho contra mi hermana y la he vencido.»

9 Cuando Lía vio que ya no podía tener hijos, tomó a su esclava Zilpá y se la dio a Jacob para que fuera su concubina. 10 Y cuando Zilpá le dio un hijo a Jacob, 11 Lía dijo: «¡Qué suerte! Por eso el niño se va a llamar Gad.»

12 Después Zilpá le dio otro hijo a Jacob, 13 y entonces Lía dijo: «¡Qué felicidad! Ahora las mujeres dirán que soy feliz. Por eso el niño se va a llamar Aser.»

14 Un día fue Rubén al campo, durante la cosecha de trigo, y allí encontró unas frutas llamadas mandrágoras, las cuales llevó a su madre Lía. Cuando Raquel vio las frutas, le dijo a Lía:

—Por favor, dame algunas de esas mandrágoras que tu hijo te trajo.

15 Pero Lía le contestó:

—¿Te parece poco haberme quitado el marido? ¡Y ahora quieres también quitarme las mandrágoras de mi hijo!

—Pues a cambio de las mandrágoras de tu hijo, esta noche Jacob dormirá contigo —propuso Raquel.

16 Por la noche, cuando Jacob regresó del campo, Lía salió a su encuentro y le dijo:

—Hoy vas a dormir conmigo, porque te he alquilado a cambio de las mandrágoras de mi hijo.

Esa noche Jacob durmió con Lía, 17 y ella le dio a Jacob su quinto hijo, porque Dios oyó su oración. 18 Entonces Lía dijo: «Este niño se va a llamar Isacar, pues Dios me ha premiado porque le di mi esclava a mi marido.»

19 Después Lía le dio a Jacob su sexto hijo, 20 y dijo: «Dios me ha dado un buen regalo. Ahora mi marido me estimará más, porque ya le he dado seis hijos. Por eso este niño se va a llamar Zabulón.»

21 Por último, Lía tuvo una hija, a la cual llamó Dina. 22 Pero Dios se acordó de Raquel; oyó su oración y le permitió tener hijos. 23 Cuando tuvo el primero, dijo: «Dios me ha quitado la vergüenza de no tener hijos. 24 Ojalá me permita tener otro.» Por eso lo llamó José.

Trampas entre Jacob y Labán

25 Después que Raquel dio a luz a José, Jacob dijo a Labán:

—Déjame regresar a mi propia tierra. 26 Dame mis hijos y mis mujeres, pues por ellas he trabajado contigo, y déjame ir. Tú bien sabes cómo he trabajado para ti.

27 Pero Labán le contestó:

—Por favor, quédate conmigo. He sabido por adivinación que el Señor me ha bendecido por medio de ti. 28 Dime cuánto quieres ganar, y te lo pagaré.

29 Entonces Jacob le dijo:

—Tú bien sabes cómo he trabajado para ti y cómo he cuidado tus animales; 30 lo poco que tenías antes que yo viniera, ha aumentado enormemente, pues desde que llegué, el Señor te ha bendecido; pero, ¿cuándo voy a comenzar a trabajar para mi propia familia?

31 —¿Cuánto quieres que te pague? —insistió Labán.

—No me pagues nada —respondió Jacob—. Volveré a cuidar tus ovejas, si aceptas lo que te voy a proponer: 32 déjame pasar hoy por entre tu rebaño, para apartar todos los corderitos negros y todos los cabritos manchados y moteados. Ellos serán mi salario. 33 Así, cuando más adelante vengas a ver lo que he ganado, tendrás la prueba de mi honradez: pues si en mi rebaño hay cabras que no sean manchadas o moteadas, o corderos que no sean negros, será que te los he robado.

34 —Está bien, acepto lo que propones —dijo Labán.

35 Pero ese mismo día Labán apartó todos los chivos rayados y moteados, y todas las cabras manchadas y moteadas o que tenían algo blanco, y todos los corderos negros, y se los dio a sus hijos para que los cuidaran. 36 Luego se fue con este rebaño del lugar donde estaba Jacob, a una distancia de tres días de camino.

Jacob, por su parte, siguió cuidando las otras ovejas de Labán. 37 Cortó ramas verdes de álamo, almendro y castaño, y las peló para que se pudieran ver rayas blancas; 38-39 luego puso las varas, ya peladas, frente a los rebaños, en el lugar donde tomaban agua. Allí era donde los machos se unían con las hembras, y como lo hacían delante de las varas, sus crías nacían rayadas, manchadas y moteadas. 40 Entonces Jacob las apartaba y las ponía frente a los animales rayados y negros del rebaño de Labán. Así Jacob fue formando su propio rebaño, separándolo del rebaño de Labán. 41 Cada vez que los animales más gordos se unían para tener crías, Jacob ponía las varas en el lugar donde tomaban agua, de manera que pudieran ver las varas en el momento de unirse; 42 pero cuando venían los animales más flacos, no ponía las varas. Por eso los animales más flacos eran para Labán, y los más gordos eran para Jacob. 43 De esa manera Jacob se hizo muy rico y llegó a tener muchas ovejas, esclavos, esclavas, camellos y asnos.

30 When Rachel saw that she could not bear children to Jacob, Rachel envied her sister. And she said to Jacob, “Give me children—if not, I will die!” 2 And Jacob became angry[a] with Rachel. And he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?” 3 Then she said, “Here is my servant girl Bilhah; go in to her that she may bear children as my surrogate.[b] Then I will even have children[c] by her.” 4 Then she gave him Bilhah, her female servant, as a wife, and Jacob went in to her 5 And Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son for Jacob. 6 Then Rachel said, “God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan. 7 And Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, conceived again and bore a second son to Jacob. 8 And Rachel said, “I have struggled a mighty struggle with my sister and have prevailed.” And she called his name Naphtali. 9 When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took Zilpah her female servant and gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 And Zilpah, the female slave of Leah, bore a son to Jacob. 11 Then Leah said, “Good fortune!” And she called his name Gad. 12 And Zilpah, Leah’s female servant, bore a second son to Jacob. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy am I! For women have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher.

14 And in the days of the wheat harvest, Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and he brought them to Leah his mother. And Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” 15 And she said to her, “Is your taking my husband such a small thing that you will also take the mandrakes of my son?” Then Rachel said, “Then he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.” 16 When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him. And she said, “Come in to me, for I have hired[d] you with my son’s mandrakes.” And he slept with her that night. 17 And God listened to Leah and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob. 18 Then Leah said, “God has given me my wage since I gave my servant girl to my husband.” And she called his name Issachar. 19 And Leah conceived again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob. 20 And Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good gift. This time my husband will acknowledge me, because I bore him six sons.” And she called his name Zebulun. 21 And afterward she gave birth to a daughter. And she called her name Dinah. 22 Then God remembered Rachel and listened to her, and God opened her womb. 23 And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And she said, “God has taken away my disgrace.” 24 And she called his name Joseph, saying, “Yahweh has added to me another son.”

Jacob’s Prosperity

25 And it happened that as soon as Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away that I may go to my place and my land. 26 Give me my wives and my children for which I have served you, and let me go. For you yourself know my service that I have rendered to you.” 27 But Laban said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, I have learned by divination that Yahweh has blessed me because of you.” 28 And he said, “Name your wage to me and I will give it.” 29 Then he said to him, “You yourself know how I have served you and how your livestock have been with me.[e] 30 For you had little before me, and it has increased abundantly. And Yahweh has blessed you wherever I turned.[f] So then, when shall I provide for my own family also?” 31 And he said, “What shall I give you?” And Jacob said, “Do not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed your flocks and keep them. 32 Let me pass through all your flocks today, removing all the speckled and spotted sheep from them, along with[g] every dark-colored sheep among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. That[h] shall be my wages. 33 And my righteousness will answer for me later[i] when you come concerning my wages before you. Every one that is not speckled or spotted among the goats, or dark-colored among the sheep shall be stolen if it is with me.” 34 Then Laban said, “Look! Very well. It shall be according to your word.” 35 But that day he[j] removed the streaked and spotted male goats and all the speckled and spotted female goats, all that had white on it, and every dark-colored ram, and put them in the charge of his sons.[k] 36 And he put a journey of three days between him and Jacob, and Jacob pastured the remainder of Laban’s flock. 37 Then Jacob took fresh branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees and peeled white strips on them, exposing the white which was on the branches. 38 And he set the branches that he had peeled in front of the flocks, in the troughs and in the water containers. And they were in heat when they came to drink. 39 And the flocks mated by the branches, so the flocks bore streaked, speckled, and spotted. 40 And Jacob separated the lambs and turned the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark-colored in Laban’s flocks. And he put his own herds apart, and did not put them with the flocks of Laban. 41 And whenever any of the stronger of the flocks were in heat, Jacob put the branches in full view[l] of the flock in the troughs that they might mate among the branches. 42 But with the more feeble of the flock he would not put them there. So the feebler were Laban’s and the stronger were Jacob’s. 43 And the man became exceedingly[m] rich and had large flocks, female slaves, male slaves, camels, and donkeys.

30 When Rachel realized that she could bear Jacob no children, Rachel became jealous of her sister and said to Jacob, “Give me children! If you don’t, I may as well be dead.”

2 Jacob was angry at Rachel and said, “Do you think I’m God? God alone has kept you from giving birth!”

3 She said, “Here’s my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, and she will give birth for me. Because of her, I will also have children.” 4 So Rachel gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob as his wife, and he slept with her. 5 Bilhah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Jacob. 6 Rachel said, “God has judged in my favor, heard my voice, and given me a son.” So she named him Dan.[a] 7 Rachel’s servant Bilhah became pregnant again and gave birth to a second son for Jacob. 8 Rachel said, “I’ve competed fiercely with my sister, and now I’ve won.” So she named him Naphtali.[b]

9 When Leah realized that she had stopped bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as his wife. 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah gave birth to a son for Jacob, 11 and Leah said, “What good luck!” So she named him Gad.[c] 12 Leah’s servant Zilpah gave birth to a second son for Jacob, 13 and Leah said, “I’m happy now because women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.[d]

14 During the wheat harvest, Reuben found some erotic herbs[e] in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Give me your son’s erotic herbs.”

15 Leah replied, “Isn’t it enough that you’ve taken my husband? Now you want to take my son’s erotic herbs too?”

Rachel said, “For your son’s erotic herbs, Jacob[f] may sleep with you tonight.”

16 When Jacob came back from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must sleep with me because I’ve paid for you with my son’s erotic herbs.” So he slept with her that night.

17 God responded to Leah. She became pregnant and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob. 18 Leah said, “God gave me what I paid for, what I deserved for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.[g] 19 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob, 20 and she said, “God has given me a wonderful gift. Now my husband will honor me since I’ve borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[h] 21 After this, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

22 Then God remembered Rachel, responded to her, and let her conceive. 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, “God has taken away my shame.” 24 She named him Joseph,[i] saying to herself, May the Lord give me another son.

God blesses Jacob and Laban

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me off so that I can go to my own place and my own country. 26 Give me my wives and children whom I’ve worked for, and I will go. You know the work I’ve done for you.”

27 Laban said to him, “Do me this favor. I’ve discovered by a divine sign that the Lord has blessed me because of you, 28 so name your price and I will pay it.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I’ve worked for you, and how well your livestock have done with me. 30 While in my care, what little you had has multiplied a great deal. The Lord blessed you wherever I took your livestock.[j] Now, when will I be able to work for my own household too?”

31 Laban said, “What will I pay you?”

Jacob said, “Don’t pay me anything. If you will do this for me, I will take care of your flock again, and keep a portion.[k] 32 I will go through the entire flock today, taking out all of the speckled and spotted sheep, all of the black male lambs, and all of the spotted and speckled female goats. That will be my price. 33 I will be completely honest with you: when you come to check on our agreement, every female goat with me that isn’t speckled or spotted and every male lamb with me that isn’t black will be considered stolen.”

34 Laban said, “All right; let’s do it.” 35 However, on that very day Laban took out the striped and spotted male goats and all of the speckled and spotted female goats—any with some white in it—and all of the black male lambs, and gave them to his sons. 36 He put a three-day trip between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was watching the rest of Laban’s flock.

37 Then Jacob took new branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees; and he peeled white stripes on them, exposing the branches’ white color. 38 He set the branches that he had peeled near the watering troughs so that they were in front of the flock when they drank, because they often mated when they came to drink. 39 When the flock mated in front of the branches, they gave birth to striped, speckled, and spotted young. 40 Jacob sorted out the lambs, turning the flock to face the striped and black ones in Laban’s flock but keeping his flock separate, setting them apart from Laban’s flock. 41 Whenever the strongest of the flock mated, Jacob put the branches in front of them near the watering troughs so that they mated near the branches. 42 But he didn’t put branches up for the weakest of the flock. So the weakest became Laban’s and the strongest Jacob’s. 43 The man Jacob became very, very rich: he owned large flocks, female and male servants, camels, and donkeys.

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,(A) she became jealous of her sister.(B) So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

2 Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God,(C) who has kept you from having children?”(D)

3 Then she said, “Here is Bilhah,(E) my servant.(F) Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”(G)

4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife.(H) Jacob slept with her,(I) 5 and she became pregnant and bore him a son. 6 Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;(J) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”(K) Because of this she named him Dan.[a](L)

9 When Leah(P) saw that she had stopped having children,(Q) she took her servant Zilpah(R) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(S) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(T) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[c] So she named him Gad.[d](U)

12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me(V) happy.”(W) So she named him Asher.[e](X)

14 During wheat harvest,(Y) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,(Z) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough(AA) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”(AB)

16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”(AC) So he slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah,(AD) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”(AE) So she named him Issachar.[f](AF)

19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,(AG) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[g](AH)

21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.(AI)

22 Then God remembered Rachel;(AJ) he listened to her(AK) and enabled her to conceive.(AL) 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son(AM) and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(AN) 24 She named him Joseph,[h](AO) and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”(AP)

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way(AQ) so I can go back to my own homeland.(AR) 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you,(AS) and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(AT) please stay. I have learned by divination(AU) that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”(AV) 28 He added, “Name your wages,(AW) and I will pay them.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you(AX) and how your livestock has fared under my care.(AY) 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.(AZ) But now, when may I do something for my own household?(BA)”

31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat.(BB) They will be my wages.(BC) 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored,(BD) will be considered stolen.(BE)”

34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs,(BF) and he placed them in the care of his sons.(BG) 36 Then he put a three-day journey(BH) between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond(BI) and plane trees(BJ) and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.(BK) 38 Then he placed the peeled branches(BL) in all the watering troughs,(BM) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(BN) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(BO) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(BP) 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals(BQ) that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat,(BR) Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,(BS) 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.(BT) 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.(BU)
