30 Pero viendo Raquel que ella no daba hijos a Jacob(A), tuvo[a] celos de su hermana, y dijo a Jacob: «Dame hijos(B), o si no, me muero». 2 Entonces se encendió la ira de Jacob contra Raquel, y dijo: «¿Estoy yo en lugar de Dios, que te ha negado[b] el fruto de tu[c] vientre(C)?».
3 Y ella dijo: «Aquí está mi sierva Bilha(D). Llégate a ella para que dé a luz sobre mis rodillas(E), para que por medio de ella yo también tenga hijos[d](F)». 4 Raquel le dio a su sierva Bilha por mujer(G), y Jacob se llegó a ella. 5 Bilha concibió y dio a luz un hijo a Jacob. 6 Entonces Raquel dijo: «Dios me ha vindicado[e](H). Ciertamente ha oído mi voz y me ha dado un hijo». Por tanto le puso por nombre Dan[f].
7 Concibió otra vez Bilha, sierva de Raquel, y dio a luz un segundo hijo a Jacob. 8 Y Raquel dijo: «Con grandes luchas[g] he luchado con mi hermana, y ciertamente he prevalecido». Y le puso por nombre Neftalí[h].
9 Viendo Lea que había dejado de dar a luz, tomó a su sierva Zilpa y la dio por mujer a Jacob. 10 Y Zilpa, sierva de Lea, dio a luz un hijo a Jacob. 11 Entonces Lea dijo: «¡Cuán afortunada![i]». Y le puso por nombre Gad[j]. 12 Después Zilpa, sierva de Lea, dio a luz un segundo hijo a Jacob. 13 Y Lea dijo: «Dichosa de mí[k], porque las mujeres me llamarán bienaventurada(I)». Y le puso por nombre Aser[l].
14 En los días de la cosecha de trigo, Rubén fue y halló mandrágoras(J) en el campo, y las trajo a su madre Lea. Entonces Raquel dijo a Lea: «Dame, te ruego, de las mandrágoras de tu hijo». 15 Pero ella le respondió: «¿Te parece poco haberme quitado el marido? ¿Me quitarás también las mandrágoras de mi hijo?». «Que él duerma, pues, contigo esta noche a cambio de las mandrágoras de tu hijo», le dijo Raquel.
16 Cuando Jacob vino del campo por la tarde, Lea salió a su encuentro y le dijo: «Debes llegarte a mí, porque ciertamente te he alquilado por las mandrágoras de mi hijo». Y él durmió con ella aquella noche. 17 Escuchó Dios a Lea, y ella concibió y dio a luz el quinto hijo a Jacob. 18 Entonces Lea dijo: «Dios me ha dado mi recompensa[m] porque di mi sierva a mi marido». Y le puso por nombre Isacar[n].
19 Concibió Lea otra vez y dio a luz el sexto hijo a Jacob. 20 Y Lea dijo: «Dios me ha favorecido con una buena dote. Ahora mi marido vivirá conmigo[o], porque le he dado seis hijos». Y le puso por nombre Zabulón[p]. 21 Después dio a luz una hija, y le puso por nombre Dina. 22 Entonces Dios se acordó de Raquel(K). Y Dios la escuchó y le concedió hijos[q](L). 23 Ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo, y dijo: «Dios ha quitado mi afrenta(M)». 24 Y le puso por nombre José[r], diciendo: «Que el Señor me añada otro hijo(N)».
Prosperidad de Jacob
25 Cuando Raquel hubo dado a luz a José, Jacob dijo a Labán: «Despídeme(O) para que me vaya a mi lugar y a mi tierra. 26 Dame mis mujeres y mis hijos por los cuales te he servido(P), y déjame ir. Porque tú bien sabes el servicio que te he prestado[s]». 27 Pero Labán le respondió: «Si ahora he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, quédate conmigo. Me he dado cuenta de que el Señor me ha bendecido por causa tuya(Q)». 28 Y añadió: «Fíjame tu salario(R), y te lo daré».
29 Pero Jacob le respondió: «Tú sabes cómo te he servido(S), y cómo le ha ido a[t] tu ganado conmigo. 30 Porque tenías poco antes de que yo viniera[u], y ha aumentado[v] hasta ser multitud. El Señor te ha bendecido en todo lo que he hecho[w]. Y ahora, ¿cuándo proveeré yo también para mi propia casa?». 31 «¿Qué te daré?», preguntó Labán. «No me des nada», respondió Jacob. «Volveré a pastorear y a cuidar tu rebaño si tan solo haces esto por mí: 32 déjame pasar por entre todo tu rebaño hoy, apartando de él toda oveja moteada o manchada y todos los corderos negros, y las manchadas o moteadas de entre las cabras, y ese será mi salario(T). 33 Mi honradez[x] responderá por mí el día de mañana, cuando vengas a ver acerca de mi salario[y]. Todo lo que no sea moteado y manchado entre las cabras, y negro entre los corderos, si es hallado conmigo, se considerará robado».
34 Y Labán dijo: «Muy bien, sea[z] conforme a tu palabra».
35 Aquel mismo día apartó Labán los machos cabríos rayados o manchados y todas las cabras moteadas o manchadas, y todo lo que tenía algo de blanco, y de entre los corderos todos los negros, y lo puso todo al cuidado[aa] de sus hijos. 36 Y puso una distancia de tres días de camino entre sí y Jacob; y Jacob apacentaba el resto de los rebaños de Labán.
37 Entonces Jacob tomó[ab] varas verdes de álamo, de almendro y de plátano, y les sacó tiras blancas de la corteza, descubriendo así lo blanco de[ac] las varas. 38 Y colocó las varas que había descortezado delante de los rebaños, en los canales, en los abrevaderos, donde los rebaños venían a beber; y se apareaban[ad] cuando venían a beber. 39 Así se apareaban[ae] los rebaños junto a las varas, y los rebaños tenían crías rayadas, moteadas y manchadas. 40 Jacob apartó los corderos, y puso los rebaños en dirección a[af] lo rayado y a todo lo negro en el rebaño de Labán, y puso su propio rebaño aparte. No lo puso con el rebaño de Labán.
41 Además, cada vez que los más robustos del rebaño se apareaban[ag], Jacob ponía las varas a la vista del rebaño en los canales, para que se aparearan[ah] frente a las varas. 42 Pero cuando el rebaño era débil, no las ponía, de manera que las crías débiles vinieron a ser de Labán y las robustas de Jacob. 43 Así prosperó[ai] el hombre en gran manera, y tuvo grandes rebaños, y siervas y siervos, y camellos y asnos(U).

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing children for Ya‘akov, she envied her sister and said to Ya‘akov, “Give me children, or I will die!” 2 This made Ya‘akov angry at Rachel; he answered, “Am I in God’s place? He’s the one who is denying you children.” 3 She said, “Here is my maid Bilhah. Go, sleep with her, and let her give birth to a child that will be laid on my knees, so that through her I too can build a family.” 4 So she gave him Bilhah her slave-girl as his wife, and Ya‘akov went in and slept with her. 5 Bilhah conceived and bore Ya‘akov a son. 6 Rachel said, “God has judged in my favor; indeed he has heard me and given me a son.” Therefore she called him Dan [he judged].
7 Bilhah Rachel’s slave-girl conceived again and bore Ya‘akov a second son. 8 Rachel said, “I have wrestled mightily with my sister and won,” and called him Naftali [my wrestling].
9 When Le’ah saw that she had stopped having children, she took Zilpah her slave-girl and gave her to Ya‘akov as his wife. 10 Zilpah Le’ah’s slave-girl bore Ya‘akov a son; 11 and Le’ah said, “Good fortune has come,” calling him Gad [good fortune].
12 Zilpah Le’ah’s slave-girl bore Ya‘akov a second son; 13 and Le’ah said, “How happy I am! Women will say I am happy!” and called him Asher [happy].
(iv) 14 During the wheat harvest season Re’uven went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Le’ah. Rachel said to Le’ah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes [so that I can be fertile].” 15 She answered, “Isn’t it enough that you have taken away my husband? Do you have to take my son’s mandrakes too?” Rachel said, “Very well; in exchange for your son’s mandrakes, sleep with him tonight.” 16 When Ya‘akov came in from the field in the evening, Le’ah went out to meet him and said, “You have to come and sleep with me, because I’ve hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So Ya‘akov slept with her that night. 17 God listened to Le’ah, and she conceived and bore Ya‘akov a fifth son. 18 Le’ah said, “God has given me my hire, because I gave my slave-girl to my husband.” So she called him Yissakhar [hire, reward].
19 Le’ah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Ya‘akov. 20 Le’ah said, “God has given me a wonderful gift. Now at last my husband will live with me, since I have borne him six sons.” And she called him Z’vulun [living together].
21 After this, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah [controversy over rights].
22 Then God took note of Rachel, heeded her prayer and made her fertile. 23 She conceived, had a son and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.” 24 She called him Yosef [may he add], saying, “May Adonai add to me another son.”
25 After Rachel had given birth to Yosef, Ya‘akov said to Lavan, “Send me on my way, so that I can return to my own place, to my own country. 26 Let me take my wives, for whom I have served you, and my children; and let me go. You know very well how faithfully I have served you.” 27 Lavan answered him, “If you regard me favorably, then please listen: I have observed the signs that Adonai has blessed me on account of you. (v) 28 Name your wages,” he said; “I will pay them.” 29 Ya‘akov replied, “You know how faithfully I have served you and how your livestock have prospered under my care. 30 The few you had before I came have increased substantially; Adonai has blessed you wherever I went. But now, when will I provide for my own household?” 31 Lavan said, “What should I give you?” “Nothing,” answered Ya‘akov, “just do this one thing for me: once more I will pasture your flock and take care of it. 32 I will also go through the flock and pick out every speckled, spotted or brown sheep, and every speckled or spotted goat; these and their offspring will be my wages. 33 And I will let my integrity stand as witness against me in the future: when you come to look over the animals constituting my wages, every goat that isn’t speckled or spotted and every sheep that isn’t brown will count as stolen by me.” 34 Lavan replied, “As you have said, so be it.”
35 That day Lavan removed the male goats that were streaked or spotted and all the female goats that were speckled or spotted, every one with white on it, and all the brown sheep; turned them over to his sons; 36 and put three days’ distance between himself and Ya‘akov. Ya‘akov fed the rest of Lavan’s flocks.
37 Ya‘akov took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white streaks on them by peeling off the bark. 38 Then he set the rods he had peeled upright in the watering troughs, so that the animals would see them when they came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink, 39 the animals mated in sight of the rods and gave birth to streaked, speckled and spotted young. 40 Ya‘akov divided the lambs and had the animals mate with the streaked and the brown in the flock of Lavan. He also kept his own livestock separate and did not have them mix with Lavan’s flock. 41 Whenever the hardier animals came into heat, Ya‘akov would set up the rods in the watering troughs; so that the animals would see them and conceive in front of them; 42 but he didn’t set up the rods in front of the weaker animals. Thus the more feeble were Lavan’s and the stronger Ya‘akov’s. 43 In this way the man became very rich and had large flocks, along with male and female slaves, camels and donkeys.

26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.
28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
29 And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock.
32 I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
35 And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36 And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban's cattle.
41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.

Jacob’s Agreement with Laban
25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, (S)“Send me away, that I may go to (T)my own place and to my country. 26 Give me my wives and my children (U)for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done for you.”
27 And Laban said to him, “Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for (V)I have learned by experience that the Lord has blessed me for your sake.” 28 Then he said, (W)“Name me your wages, and I will give it.”
29 So Jacob said to him, (X)“You know how I have served you and how your livestock has been with me. 30 For what you had before I came was little, and it has increased to a great amount; the Lord has blessed you [l]since my coming. And now, when shall I also (Y)provide for my own house?”
31 So he said, “What shall I give you?”
And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flocks: 32 Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and (Z)these shall be my wages. 33 So my (AA)righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when the subject of my wages comes before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, will be considered stolen, if it is with me.”
34 And Laban said, “Oh, that it were according to your word!” 35 So he removed that day the male goats that were (AB)speckled and spotted, all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had some white in it, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and gave them into the hand of his sons. 36 Then he put three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37 Now (AC)Jacob took for himself rods of green poplar and of the almond and chestnut trees, peeled white strips in them, and exposed the white which was in the rods. 38 And the rods which he had peeled, he set before the flocks in the gutters, in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, so that they should conceive when they came to drink. 39 So the flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted. 40 Then Jacob separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the streaked and all the brown in the flock of Laban; but he put his own flocks by themselves and did not put them with Laban’s flock.
41 And it came to pass, whenever the stronger livestock conceived, that Jacob placed the rods before the eyes of the livestock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods. 42 But when the flocks were feeble, he did not put them in; so the feebler were Laban’s and the stronger Jacob’s. 43 Thus the man (AD)became exceedingly prosperous, and (AE)had large flocks, female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
