Adán y Eva desobedecen a Dios
3 La serpiente era más astuta que todos los animales salvajes que Dios el Señor había creado, y le preguntó a la mujer:
—¿Así que Dios les ha dicho que no coman del fruto de ningún árbol del jardín?
2 Y la mujer le contestó:
—Podemos comer del fruto de cualquier árbol, 3 menos del árbol que está en medio del jardín. Dios nos ha dicho que no debemos comer ni tocar el fruto de ese árbol, porque si lo hacemos, moriremos.
4 Pero la serpiente le dijo a la mujer:
—No es cierto. No morirán. 5 Dios sabe muy bien que cuando ustedes coman del fruto de ese árbol podrán saber lo que es bueno y lo que es malo, y que entonces serán como Dios.
6 La mujer vio que el fruto del árbol era hermoso, y le dieron ganas de comerlo y de llegar a tener entendimiento. Así que cortó uno de los frutos y se lo comió. Luego le dio a su esposo, y él también comió. 7 En ese momento se les abrieron los ojos, y los dos se dieron cuenta de que estaban desnudos. Entonces cosieron hojas de higuera y se cubrieron con ellas.
8 El hombre y su mujer escucharon que Dios el Señor andaba por el jardín a la hora en que sopla el viento de la tarde, y corrieron a esconderse de él entre los árboles del jardín. 9 Pero Dios el Señor llamó al hombre y le preguntó:
—¿Dónde estás?
10 El hombre contestó:
—Escuché que andabas por el jardín y tuve miedo, porque estoy desnudo; por eso me escondí.
11 Entonces Dios le preguntó:
—¿Y quién te ha dicho que estás desnudo? ¿Acaso has comido del fruto del árbol del que te dije que no comieras?
12 El hombre contestó:
—La mujer que me diste por compañera me dio de ese fruto, y yo lo comí.
13 Entonces Dios el Señor le preguntó a la mujer:
—¿Por qué lo hiciste?
Y ella respondió:
—La serpiente me engañó, y por eso comí del fruto.
14 Entonces Dios el Señor dijo a la serpiente:
—Por esto que has hecho, maldita serás entre todos los demás animales. De hoy en adelante caminarás arrastrándote y comerás tierra. 15 Haré que tú y la mujer sean enemigas, lo mismo que tu descendencia y su descendencia. Su descendencia te aplastará la cabeza, y tú le morderás el talón.
16 A la mujer le dijo:
—Aumentaré tus dolores cuando tengas hijos, y con dolor los darás a luz. Pero tu deseo te llevará a tu marido, y él tendrá autoridad sobre ti.
17 Al hombre le dijo:
—Como le hiciste caso a tu mujer y comiste del fruto del árbol del que te dije que no comieras, ahora la tierra va a estar bajo maldición por tu culpa; con duro trabajo la harás producir tu alimento durante toda tu vida. 18 La tierra te dará espinos y cardos, y tendrás que comer plantas silvestres. 19 Te ganarás el pan con el sudor de tu frente, hasta que vuelvas a la misma tierra de la cual fuiste formado, pues tierra eres y en tierra te convertirás.
20 El hombre llamó Eva a su mujer, pues ella fue la madre de todos los que viven. 21 Dios el Señor hizo ropa de pieles de animales para que el hombre y su mujer se vistieran, 22 y dijo: «Ahora el hombre se ha vuelto como uno de nosotros, pues sabe lo que es bueno y lo que es malo. No vaya a tomar también del fruto del árbol de la vida, y lo coma y viva para siempre.»
23 Por eso Dios el Señor sacó al hombre del jardín de Edén, y lo puso a trabajar la tierra de la cual había sido formado. 24 Después de haber sacado al hombre, puso al oriente del jardín unos seres alados y una espada ardiendo que daba vueltas hacia todos lados, para evitar que nadie llegara al árbol de la vida.

3 Now the serpent was more cunning than any wild animal which the LORD God had made; and he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden.
3 “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You shall not die at all.
5 “But, God knows that when you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened; and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”6 So the woman (seeing that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired, to get knowledge) took of the fruit thereof and ate; and also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
7 Then, the eyes of them both were opened; and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig tree leaves together and made themselves coverings.
8 Afterward, they heard the voice of the LORD God, walking in the garden in the cool of the day. And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God, among the trees of the garden.
9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 Who said, “I heard Your voice in the garden and was afraid, because I was naked. Therefore, I hid myself.”
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree whereof I commanded you that you should not eat?”
12 Then the man said, “The woman, which You gave to be with me, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.”
13 And the LORD God said to the woman, “Why have you done this?” And the woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”
14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every wild animal. Upon your belly you shall go; and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
15 “I will also put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall break your head and you shall bruise His heel.”
16 To the woman, He said, “I will greatly increase your sorrows and your conceptions. In sorrow you shall bring forth children. And your desire shall be subject to your husband. And he shall rule over you.”
17 Also, He said to Adam, “Because you have obeyed the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree (whereof I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’), the earth is cursed for your sake. In sorrow you shall eat from it, all the days of your life.
18 “Also, it shall bring forth thorns and thistles to you. And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you return to the earth. For out of it you were taken because you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
20 And the man called his wife’s name “Eve”, because she was the mother of all living.
21 Also, to Adam and to his wife, the LORD God made coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 And the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become as one of us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he also put forth his hand and take and eat of the Tree of Life, and live forever…”
23 Therefore, the LORD God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the earth from where he was taken.
24 Thus, He cast out the man; and at the east side of the Garden of Eden, He set the Cherubims, and the blade of a shaken sword, to keep the way of the Tree of Life.

The Fall
3 Now the serpent(A) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(B)”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(C) 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(D)
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(E) 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(F) knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(G) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(H) who was with her, and he ate it.(I) 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(J) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(K)
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking(L) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid(M) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”(N)
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid(O) because I was naked;(P) so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?(Q) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?(R)”
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me(S)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,(T) and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed(U) are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust(V)
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[a](W) and hers;(X)
he will crush[b] your head,(Y)
and you will strike his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.(Z)
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.(AA)”
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’(AB)
“Cursed(AC) is the ground(AD) because of you;
through painful toil(AE) you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.(AF)
18 It will produce thorns and thistles(AG) for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.(AH)
19 By the sweat of your brow(AI)
you will eat your food(AJ)
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”(AK)
20 Adam[c] named his wife Eve,[d](AL) because she would become the mother of all the living.
21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.(AM) 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,(AN) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life(AO) and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden(AP) to work the ground(AQ) from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[e] of the Garden of Eden(AR) cherubim(AS) and a flaming sword(AT) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.(AU)
