Jacob suplanta a Esaú
27 Y aconteció que siendo ya viejo Isaac, y sus ojos demasiado débiles para ver(A), llamó a Esaú(B), su hijo mayor, y le dijo: Hijo mío. Y él le respondió: Heme aquí. 2 Y dijo Isaac: Mira, yo soy viejo y no sé el día de mi muerte(C). 3 Ahora pues, te ruego, toma tu equipo, tu aljaba y tu arco, sal al campo y tráeme caza(D); 4 y prepárame un buen guisado[a] como a mí me gusta, y tráemelo para que yo coma, y que mi alma te bendiga antes que yo muera(E).
5 Rebeca estaba escuchando cuando Isaac hablaba a su hijo Esaú. Y cuando Esaú fue al campo a cazar una pieza para traer a casa[b], 6 Rebeca habló a su hijo Jacob, diciendo(F): He aquí, oí a tu padre que hablaba con tu hermano Esaú, diciéndole: 7 «Tráeme caza y prepárame un buen guisado para que coma y te bendiga en presencia del Señor antes de mi muerte». 8 Ahora pues, hijo mío, obedéceme en[c] lo que te mando(G). 9 Ve ahora al rebaño y tráeme[d] de allí dos de los mejores cabritos de las cabras, y yo prepararé con ellos un buen guisado para tu padre como a él le gusta. 10 Entonces se lo llevarás a tu padre, que comerá, para que te bendiga antes de su muerte. 11 Y Jacob dijo a su madre Rebeca: He aquí, Esaú mi hermano es hombre velludo(H) y yo soy lampiño. 12 Quizá mi padre me palpe, y entonces seré para él un engañador[e](I) y traeré sobre mí una maldición y no una bendición. 13 Pero su madre le respondió: Caiga sobre mí tu maldición, hijo mío; solamente obedéceme[f](J), y ve y tráemelos. 14 Y él fue, los tomó y los trajo a su madre; y su madre hizo un buen guisado, como a su padre le gustaba. 15 Entonces Rebeca tomó las mejores[g] vestiduras(K) de Esaú, su hijo mayor, que tenía ella en la casa, y vistió a Jacob, su hijo menor; 16 le puso las pieles de los cabritos[h] sobre las manos y sobre la parte lampiña del cuello, 17 y puso el guisado y el pan que había hecho en manos de su hijo Jacob.
18 Entonces él fue a su padre, y dijo: Padre mío. Y este respondió: Aquí estoy. ¿Quién eres, hijo mío? 19 Y Jacob dijo a su padre: Soy Esaú tu primogénito. He hecho lo que me dijiste. Levántate, te ruego(L). Siéntate y come de mi caza para que me bendigas[i](M). 20 E Isaac dijo a su hijo: ¿Cómo es que la has encontrado tan pronto, hijo mío? Y él respondió: Porque el Señor tu Dios hizo que así me[j] acaeciera(N). 21 Isaac entonces dijo a Jacob: Te ruego que te acerques para palparte(O), hijo mío, a ver si en verdad eres o no mi hijo Esaú. 22 Jacob se acercó a Isaac su padre, y él lo palpó y dijo: La voz es la voz de Jacob, pero las manos son las manos de Esaú. 23 Y no lo reconoció porque sus manos eran velludas como las de su hermano Esaú(P), y lo bendijo. 24 Y le preguntó: ¿Eres en verdad mi hijo Esaú? Y él respondió: Yo soy. 25 Entonces dijo: Sírveme[k], y comeré de la caza de mi hijo para que yo[l] te bendiga(Q). Y le sirvió[m], y comió; le trajo también vino, y bebió. 26 Y su padre Isaac le dijo: Te ruego que te acerques y me beses, hijo mío. 27 Y él se acercó y lo besó; y al notar[n] el olor de sus vestidos, lo bendijo(R), diciendo[o]:
He aquí, el olor(S) de mi hijo
es como el aroma de un campo que el Señor ha bendecido(T).
28 Dios te dé, pues, del rocío del cielo,
y de la grosura de la tierra(U),
y abundancia de grano y de mosto(V).
29 Sírvante pueblos,
y póstrense ante ti naciones(W);
sé señor de tus hermanos(X),
e inclínense ante ti los hijos de tu madre(Y).
Malditos los que te maldigan,
y benditos los que te bendigan(Z).
30 Y sucedió que tan pronto como Isaac había terminado de bendecir a Jacob, y apenas había salido Jacob de la presencia de su padre Isaac, su hermano Esaú llegó de su cacería. 31 Y también él hizo un buen guisado y lo trajo a su padre, y dijo a su padre: Levántese mi padre(AA), y coma de la caza de su hijo, para que tú me bendigas[p](AB). 32 Y su padre Isaac le dijo: ¿Quién eres(AC)? Y él respondió: Soy tu hijo, tu primogénito, Esaú(AD). 33 Y tembló Isaac con estremecimiento muy grande, y dijo: ¿Quién fue entonces el que trajo caza, antes de que tú vinieras, y me la trajo y yo comí de todo, y lo bendije(AE)? Sí, y bendito será(AF). 34 Al oír Esaú las palabras de su padre, clamó con un grande y amargo clamor, y dijo a su padre: ¡Bendíceme, bendíceme también a mí, padre mío(AG)! 35 Y él respondió: Tu hermano vino con engaño, y se ha llevado tu bendición(AH). 36 Y Esaú dijo: Con razón se llama Jacob[q], pues me ha suplantado estas dos veces. Me quitó mi primogenitura(AI), y he aquí, ahora me ha quitado mi bendición. Y añadió: ¿No has reservado una bendición para mí? 37 Pero Isaac respondió, y dijo a Esaú: He aquí, yo lo he puesto por señor tuyo, y le he dado por siervos a todos sus parientes[r]; y con grano y mosto lo he sustentado(AJ). En cuanto a ti ¿qué haré, pues, hijo mío? 38 Y Esaú dijo a su padre: ¿No tienes más que una bendición, padre mío? Bendíceme, bendíceme también a mí, padre mío. Y Esaú alzó su voz y lloró(AK). 39 Entonces su padre Isaac respondió, y le dijo(AL):
He aquí, lejos de[s] la fertilidad[t] de la tierra será tu morada(AM),
y lejos del[u] rocío que baja[v] del cielo.
40 Por tu espada vivirás,
y a tu hermano servirás(AN);
mas acontecerá que cuando te impacientes,
arrancarás su yugo de tu cerviz(AO).
Rencor de Esaú
41 Esaú, pues, guardó rencor a Jacob a causa de la bendición con que su padre lo había bendecido(AP); y Esaú se dijo[w]: Los días de luto por mi padre están cerca(AQ); entonces mataré a mi hermano Jacob. 42 Cuando las palabras de Esaú, su hijo mayor, le fueron comunicadas a Rebeca, envió a llamar a Jacob, su hijo menor, y le dijo: Mira, en cuanto a ti, tu hermano Esaú se consuela con la idea de matarte. 43 Ahora pues, hijo mío, obedece mi voz(AR): levántate y huye[x] a Harán(AS), a casa de mi hermano Labán(AT). 44 Y quédate con él algunos días(AU) hasta que se calme[y] el furor de tu hermano; 45 hasta que la ira de tu hermano contra ti se calme[z], y olvide lo que le hiciste(AV). Entonces enviaré y te traeré de allá. ¿Por qué he de sufrir la pérdida de vosotros dos en un mismo día?
46 Y Rebeca dijo a Isaac: Estoy cansada de vivir[aa] a causa de las hijas de Het(AW); si Jacob toma mujer de las hijas de Het, como estas, de las hijas de esta[ab] tierra, ¿para qué me servirá la vida(AX)?

Isaac bendice a Jacob y Esaú
27 Isaac estaba ya muy viejo, y se había quedado ciego. Un día llamó a Esaú, su hijo mayor, y le dijo:
—¡Hijo mío!
—Dime, padre —contestó Esaú.
2 —Ya ves que estoy muy viejo —dijo Isaac—, y un día de éstos me puedo morir. 3 Por eso quiero que vayas al monte con tu arco y tus flechas para cazar algún animal. 4 Prepara luego un guisado sabroso, como a mí me gusta, y tráelo para que yo lo coma. Entonces te daré mi bendición antes de morir.
5 Pero Rebeca estaba oyendo lo que Isaac le decía a Esaú. Por eso, en cuanto éste se fue al monte a cazar algo para su padre, 6 ella dijo a Jacob, su hijo menor:
—Mira, oí que tu padre estaba hablando con tu hermano Esaú, y que le decía: 7 “Caza algún animal, prepara un guisado sabroso para que yo lo coma, y te daré mi bendición delante del Señor antes de morir.” 8 Así que, hijo mío, escucha bien lo que te voy a decir: 9 Ve a donde está el rebaño, y tráeme dos de los mejores cabritos; voy a prepararle a tu padre un guisado sabroso, como a él le gusta. 10 Tú se lo vas a llevar para que lo coma, y así te dará a ti su bendición antes de morir.
11 Pero Jacob le dijo a su madre:
—Mi hermano tiene mucho pelo en el cuerpo, y yo no. 12 Si mi padre llega a tocarme y me reconoce, va a pensar que me estoy burlando de él; entonces haré que me maldiga en lugar de que me bendiga.
13 Pero su madre le contestó:
—Hijo mío, que esa maldición recaiga sobre mí. Tú haz lo que te digo y tráeme esos cabritos.
14 Jacob fue por los cabritos y se los trajo a su madre. Ella preparó entonces un guisado sabroso, como a Isaac le gustaba, 15 sacó la mejor ropa de Esaú, su hijo mayor, que estaba guardada en la casa, y se la puso a Jacob, su hijo menor. 16 Luego, con la piel de los cabritos, le cubrió a Jacob los brazos y la parte del cuello donde no tenía pelo, 17 y le dio el guisado y el pan que había preparado.
18 Entonces Jacob entró donde estaba su padre, y le dijo:
—¡Padre!
—Aquí estoy. ¿Cuál de mis hijos eres tú? —preguntó Isaac.
19 —Soy Esaú, tu hijo mayor —contestó Jacob—. Ya hice lo que me dijiste. Levántate, por favor; siéntate y come del animal que he cazado, y dame tu bendición.
20 Entonces Isaac le preguntó:
—¿Cómo pudiste encontrarlo tan pronto, hijo mío?
—El Señor tu Dios me ayudó a encontrarlo —respondió Jacob.
21 Pero Isaac le dijo:
—Acércate y déjame tocarte, a ver si de veras eres mi hijo Esaú.
22 Jacob se acercó para que su padre lo tocara. Entonces Isaac dijo: «La voz es la de Jacob, pero los brazos son los de Esaú.» 23 Así que no lo reconoció, porque sus brazos tenían mucho pelo, como los de su hermano Esaú. Pero cuando iba a darle su bendición, 24 volvió a preguntarle:
—¿De veras eres mi hijo Esaú?
—Sí, yo soy Esaú —respondió Jacob.
25 Entonces su padre le dijo:
—Sírveme, hijo mío, para que coma yo de lo que cazaste, y entonces te daré mi bendición.
Jacob le sirvió de comer a su padre, y también le trajo vino. Isaac comió y bebió, 26 y luego le dijo:
—Acércate, hijo, y dame un beso.
27 Cuando Jacob se acercó para besarlo, Isaac le olió la ropa. Entonces lo bendijo con estas palabras:
«Sí, este olor es de mi hijo.
Es como el olor de un campo
bendecido por el Señor.
28 Que Dios te dé la lluvia del cielo,
las mejores cosechas de la tierra,
mucho trigo y mucho vino.
29 Que mucha gente te sirva;
que las naciones se arrodillen delante de ti.
Gobierna a tus propios hermanos;
¡que se arrodillen delante de ti!
Los que te maldigan serán malditos,
y los que te bendigan serán benditos.»
30 Había terminado Isaac de bendecir a Jacob, y apenas salía Jacob de donde estaba su padre, cuando Esaú regresó de cazar. 31 También él preparó un guisado sabroso, se lo llevó a su padre, y le dijo:
—Levántate, padre; come del animal que tu hijo ha cazado, y dame tu bendición.
32 Entonces Isaac le preguntó:
—¿Quién eres tú?
—Soy Esaú, tu hijo mayor —contestó.
33 Isaac se quedó muy sorprendido, y con voz temblorosa dijo:
—Entonces, ¿quién es el que fue a cazar y me trajo el guisado? Yo me lo comí todo antes de que tú llegaras, y le di mi bendición, y ahora él ha quedado bendecido.
34 Cuando Esaú oyó lo que su padre decía, se puso a llorar amargamente, y gritó:
—¡Dame también a mí tu bendición, padre mío!
35 Pero Isaac le contestó:
—Ya vino tu hermano, y me engañó, y se llevó la bendición que era para ti.
36 —¡Con razón le pusieron por nombre Jacob! —dijo Esaú—. ¡Ya van dos veces que me hace trampa! Primero me quitó mis derechos de hijo mayor, y ahora me ha quitado la bendición que me tocaba. ¿No has guardado ninguna otra bendición para mí?
37 Entonces Isaac le contestó:
—Mira, yo le he dado a Jacob autoridad sobre ti; le he dado por siervos a todos sus parientes, y le he deseado que tenga mucho trigo y mucho vino. ¿Qué puedo hacer ahora por ti, hijo mío?
38 Esaú insistió:
—¿No puedes dar más que una sola bendición, padre mío? ¡Bendíceme también a mí!
Y volvió a llorar a gritos.
39 Entonces Isaac le dijo:
«Vivirás lejos de las tierras fértiles
y de la lluvia que cae del cielo.
40 Tendrás que defenderte con tu espada
y serás siervo de tu hermano;
pero cuando te hagas fuerte,
te librarás de él.»
Jacob huye de Esaú
41 Desde entonces Esaú odió a Jacob por la bendición que le había dado su padre, y pensaba: «Ya pronto vamos a estar de luto por la muerte de mi padre; después de eso, mataré a mi hermano Jacob.»
42 Cuando Rebeca supo lo que Esaú estaba planeando, mandó llamar a Jacob y le dijo:
—Mira, tu hermano Esaú quiere matarte para vengarse de ti. 43 Por eso, hijo, escúchame; huye en seguida a Harán, a casa de mi hermano Labán. 44 Quédate con él por algún tiempo, hasta que se le pase el enojo a tu hermano 45 y olvide lo que le has hecho. Entonces te mandaré avisar para que vuelvas. ¡No quiero perder a mis dos hijos en un solo día!
46 Luego Rebeca le dijo a Isaac:
—Estoy cansada de la vida por culpa de estas hititas con las que Esaú se casó. Si Jacob se casa con una hitita como estas, de las que viven aquí en Canaán, vale más que me muera.

Isaac Blesses Jacob
27 Now it came to pass, when Isaac was (A)old and (B)his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.”
And he answered him, “Here I am.”
2 Then he said, “Behold now, I am old. I (C)do not know the day of my death. 3 (D)Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me. 4 And make me [a]savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul (E)may bless you before I die.”
5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it. 6 So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, 7 ‘Bring me game and make [b]savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’ 8 Now therefore, my son, (F)obey my voice according to what I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make (G)savory food from them for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he (H)may bless you before his death.”
11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, (I)Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man. 12 Perhaps my father will (J)feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring (K)a curse on myself and not a blessing.”
13 But his mother said to him, (L)“Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.” 14 And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother (M)made [c]savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took (N)the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
18 So he went to his father and said, “My father.”
And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”
19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, (O)that your soul may bless me.”
20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?”
And he said, “Because the Lord your God brought it to me.”
21 Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I (P)may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because (Q)his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.
24 Then he said, “Are you really my son Esau?”
He said, “I am.”
25 He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so (R)that my soul may bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.” 27 And he came near and (S)kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:
“Surely, (T)the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field
Which the Lord has blessed.
28 Therefore may (U)God give you
Of (V)the dew of heaven,
Of (W)the fatness of the earth,
And (X)plenty of grain and wine.
29 (Y)Let peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you.
Be master over your brethren,
And (Z)let your mother’s sons bow down to you.
(AA)Cursed be everyone who curses you,
And blessed be those who bless you!”
Esau’s Lost Hope(AB)
30 Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also had made [d]savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, “Let my father arise and (AC)eat of his son’s game, that your soul may bless me.”
32 And his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”
So he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33 Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him—(AD)and indeed he shall be blessed.”
34 When Esau heard the words of his father, (AE)he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me—me also, O my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing.”
36 And Esau said, (AF)“Is he not rightly named [e]Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
37 Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, (AG)“Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with (AH)grain and wine I have [f]sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?”
38 And Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me—me also, O my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice (AI)and wept.
39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:
“Behold, (AJ)your dwelling shall be of the [g]fatness of the earth,
And of the dew of heaven from above.
40 By your sword you shall live,
And (AK)you shall serve your brother;
And (AL)it shall come to pass, when you become restless,
That you shall break his yoke from your neck.”
Jacob Escapes from Esau
41 So Esau (AM)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, (AN)“The days of mourning for my father [h]are at hand; (AO)then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
42 And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Surely your brother Esau (AP)comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban (AQ)in Haran. 44 And stay with him a (AR)few days, until your brother’s fury turns away, 45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?”
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, (AS)“I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; (AT)if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(A) he called for Esau his older son(B) and said to him, “My son.”
“Here I am,” he answered.
2 Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(C) 3 Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(D) to hunt some wild game for me. 4 Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(E) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(F) before I die.”(G)
5 Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(H) to hunt game and bring it back, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(I) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(J) 8 Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(K) 9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(L) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(M) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(N) before he dies.”
11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(O) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(P) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(Q) on myself rather than a blessing.”
13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(R) Just do what I say;(S) go and get them for me.”
14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(T) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(U) of Esau her older son,(V) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(W) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.
18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”
“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(X)
19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(Y) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(Z) so that you may give me your blessing.”(AA)
20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”
“The Lord your God gave me success,(AB)” he replied.
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(AC) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”
22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(AD) who touched(AE) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(AF) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.
“I am,” he replied.
25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(AG)
Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”
27 So he went to him and kissed(AH) him(AI). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(AJ) he blessed him and said,
“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
that the Lord has blessed.(AK)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(AL)
and earth’s richness(AM)—
an abundance of grain(AN) and new wine.(AO)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(AP)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(AQ)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(AR)”
30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(AS)
32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(AT)
“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(AU)”
33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(AV) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(AW)”
34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(AX) and said to his father, “Bless(AY) me—me too, my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(AZ) and took your blessing.”(BA)
36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[a]?(BB) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(BC) me: He took my birthright,(BD) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(BE) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”
37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(BF) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”
38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(BG)
39 His father Isaac answered him,(BH)
“Your dwelling will be
away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(BI) of heaven above.(BJ)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(BK) your brother.(BL)
But when you grow restless,
you will throw his yoke
from off your neck.(BM)”
41 Esau held a grudge(BN) against Jacob(BO) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(BP) for my father are near; then I will kill(BQ) my brother Jacob.”(BR)
42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(BS) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(BT) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(BU) Flee at once to my brother Laban(BV) in Harran.(BW) 44 Stay with him for a while(BX) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(BY) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(BZ) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(CA) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(CB) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(CC)
