26 Y HUBO hambre en la tierra, además de la primera hambre que fué en los días de Abraham: y fuése Isaac á Abimelech rey de los Filisteos, en Gerar.
2 Y apareciósele Jehová, y díjole: No desciendas á Egipto: habita en la tierra que yo te diré;
3 Habita en esta tierra, y seré contigo, y te bendeciré; porque á ti y á tu simiente daré todas estas tierras, y confirmaré el juramento que juré á Abraham tu padre:
4 Y multiplicaré tu simiente como las estrellas del cielo, y daré á tu simiente todas estas tierras; y todas las gentes de la tierra serán benditas en tu simiente.
5 Por cuanto oyó Abraham mi voz, y guardó mi precepto, mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis leyes.
6 Habitó, pues, Isaac en Gerar.
7 Y los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer; y él respondió: Es mi hermana; porque tuvo miedo de decir: Es mi mujer; que tal vez, dijo, los hombres del lugar me matarían por causa de Rebeca; porque era de hermoso aspecto.
8 Y sucedió que, después que él estuvo allí muchos días, Abimelech, rey de los Filisteos, mirando por una ventana, vió á Isaac que jugaba con Rebeca su mujer.
9 Y llamó Abimelech á Isaac, y dijo: He aquí ella es de cierto tu mujer: ¿cómo, pues, dijiste: Es mi hermana? E Isaac le respondió: Porque dije: Quizá moriré por causa de ella.
10 Y Abimelech dijo: ¿Por qué nos has hecho esto? Por poco hubiera dormido alguno del pueblo con tu mujer, y hubieras traído sobre nosotros el pecado.
11 Entonces Abimelech mandó á todo el pueblo, diciendo: El que tocare á este hombre ó á su mujer, de cierto morirá.
12 Y sembró Isaac en aquella tierra, y halló aquel año ciento por uno: y bendíjole Jehová.
13 Y el varón se engrandeció, y fué adelantando y engrandeciéndose, hasta hacerse muy poderoso:
14 Y tuvo hato de ovejas, y hato de vacas, y grande apero; y los Filisteos le tuvieron envidia.
15 Y todos los pozos que habían abierto, los criados de Abraham su padre en sus días, los Filisteos los habían cegado y llenado de tierra.
16 Y dijo Abimelech á Isaac: Apártate de nosotros, porque mucho más poderoso que nosotros te has hecho.
17 E Isaac se fué de allí; y asentó sus tiendas en el valle de Gerar, y habitó allí.
18 Y volvió á abrir Isaac los pozos de agua que habían abierto en los días de Abraham su padre, y que los Filisteos habían cegado, muerto Abraham; y llamólos por los nombres que su padre los había llamado.
19 Y los siervos de Isaac cavaron en el valle, y hallaron allí un pozo de aguas vivas.
20 Y los pastores de Gerar riñeron con los pastores de Isaac, diciendo: El agua es nuestra: por eso llamó el nombre del pozo Esek, porque habían altercado con él.
21 Y abrieron otro pozo, y también riñeron sobre él: y llamó su nombre Sitnah.
22 Y apartóse de allí, y abrió otro pozo, y no riñeron sobre él: y llamó su nombre Rehoboth, y dijo: Porque ahora nos ha hecho ensanchar Jehová y fructificaremos en la tierra.
23 Y de allí subió á Beer-seba.
24 Y apareciósele Jehová aquella noche, y dijo: Yo soy el Dios de Abraham tu padre: no temas, que yo soy contigo, y yo te bendeciré, y multiplicaré tu simiente por amor de Abraham mi siervo.
25 Y edificó allí un altar, é invocó el nombre de Jehová, y tendió allí su tienda: y abrieron allí los siervos de Isaac un pozo.
26 Y Abimelech vino á él desde Gerar, y Ahuzzath, amigo suyo, y Phicol, capitán de su ejército.
27 Y díjoles Isaac: ¿Por qué venís á mí, pues que me habéis aborrecido, y me echasteis de entre vosotros?
28 Y ellos respondieron: Hemos visto que Jehová es contigo; y dijimos: Haya ahora juramento entre nosotros, entre nosotros y ti, y haremos alianza contigo:
29 Que no nos hagas mal, como nosotros no te hemos tocado, y como solamente te hemos hecho bien, y te enviamos en paz: tú ahora, bendito de Jehová.
30 Entonces él les hizo banquete, y comieron y bebieron.
31 Y se levantaron de madrugada, y juraron el uno al otro; é Isaac los despidió, y ellos se partieron de él en paz.
32 Y en aquel día sucedió que vinieron los criados de Isaac, y diéronle nuevas acerca del pozo que habían abierto, y le dijeron: Agua hemos hallado.
33 Y llamólo Seba: por cuya causa el nombre de aquella ciudad es Beer-seba hasta este día.
34 Y cuando Esaú fué de cuarenta años, tomó por mujer á Judith hija de Beeri Hetheo, y á Basemat hija de Elón Hetheo:
35 Y fueron amargura de espíritu á Isaac y á Rebeca.

Isaac y Abimélec
26 En ese tiempo hubo mucha hambre en aquella región, además de la que hubo en tiempos de Abraham. Por eso Isaac se fue a Guerar, donde se encontraba Abimélec, rey de los filisteos. 2 Allí el Señor se apareció y le dijo: «No vayas a Egipto. Quédate en la región de la que te voy a hablar. 3 Vive en ese lugar por un tiempo. Yo estaré contigo y te bendeciré, porque a ti y a tu descendencia daré todas esas tierras. Así confirmaré el juramento que hice a tu padre Abraham. 4 Multiplicaré a tus descendientes como las estrellas del cielo y les daré todas esas tierras. Por medio de tu descendencia todas las naciones de la tierra serán bendecidas, 5 porque Abraham me obedeció y cumplió mis órdenes y mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis leyes».
6 Isaac se quedó en Guerar.
7 Y cuando la gente del lugar preguntaba a Isaac acerca de su esposa, él respondía que ella era su hermana. Tan bella era Rebeca que Isaac tenía miedo de decir que era su esposa, pues pensaba que por causa de ella podrían matarlo.
8 Isaac vivió allí un largo tiempo. Un día, Abimélec, el rey de los filisteos, miraba por una ventana, vio a Isaac acariciando a su esposa Rebeca. 9 Entonces mandó llamar a Isaac y le dijo:
—¡Conque ella es tu esposa! ¿Por qué dijiste que era tu hermana?
—Yo pensé que por causa de ella podrían matarme —contestó Isaac.
10 —¿Por qué nos hiciste esto? —respondió Abimélec—. Alguno de nosotros podría haberse acostado con tu esposa, ¡y tú nos habrías hecho a todos culpables de ese pecado!
11 Por eso Abimélec envió esta orden a todo el pueblo:
—Si alguien molesta a este hombre o a su esposa, será condenado a muerte.
12 Isaac sembró en aquella región y ese año cosechó al ciento por uno, porque el Señor lo había bendecido. 13 Así Isaac fue acumulando riquezas, hasta que llegó a ser muy rico. 14 Esto causó que los filisteos comenzaran a tenerle envidia, pues llegó a tener muchas ovejas, vacas y siervos. 15 Ahora bien, los filisteos habían cegado todos los pozos de agua que los siervos del padre de Isaac habían cavado. 16 Así que Abimélec dijo a Isaac:
—Aléjate de nosotros, pues ya eres más poderoso que nosotros.
17 Isaac se fue de allí y acampó en el valle de Guerar, donde se quedó a vivir. 18 Abrió nuevamente los pozos de agua que habían sido cavados en tiempos de su padre Abraham y que los filisteos habían tapado después de su muerte. Entonces les puso los mismos nombres que su padre les había dado.
19 Cierta vez, cuando los siervos de Isaac estaban cavando en el valle, encontraron un manantial. 20 Pero los pastores de Guerar discutieron acaloradamente con los pastores de Isaac, alegando que el agua era de ellos. Por eso Isaac llamó a ese pozo Esek,[a] porque habían peleado con él. 21 Después sus siervos cavaron otro pozo, por el cual también discutieron. Por eso Isaac lo llamó Sitna.[b] 22 Entonces Isaac se fue de allí y cavó otro pozo, pero esta vez no hubo ninguna discusión. A este pozo lo llamó Rejobot[c] y dijo: «El Señor nos ha dado mucho espacio para que prosperemos en esta región».
23 De allí Isaac se dirigió a Berseba. 24 Esa noche se apareció el Señor y le dijo: «Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abraham. No temas, que yo estoy contigo. Por amor a mi siervo Abraham, te bendeciré y multiplicaré tu descendencia».
25 Allí Isaac construyó un altar e invocó el nombre del Señor. Acampó en ese lugar y sus siervos cavaron un pozo.
26 Cierto día, Abimélec fue a ver a Isaac desde Guerar. Llegó acompañado de su consejero Ajuzat y de Ficol, el comandante de su ejército. 27 Isaac preguntó:
—Si tanto me odian, que hasta me echaron de su tierra, ¿para qué vienen a verme?
28 —Nos hemos dado cuenta de que el Señor está contigo —respondieron—. Por eso, queremos proponerte que hagamos entre nosotros un trato bajo juramento. Ese pacto será el siguiente: 29 Tú no nos harás ningún daño, ya que nosotros no te hemos perjudicado, sino que te hemos tratado bien y te hemos dejado ir en paz. ¡Ahora el bendecido del Señor eres tú!
30 Isaac les preparó un banquete y comieron y bebieron. 31 A la mañana siguiente se levantaron muy temprano e hicieron un compromiso mutuo. Luego Isaac los despidió y ellos se fueron en paz.
32 Aquel mismo día, los siervos de Isaac fueron y le informaron acerca de un pozo que habían cavado y dijeron:
—¡Hemos encontrado agua!
33 Isaac llamó a ese pozo Juramento.[d] Por eso la ciudad se llama Berseba[e] hasta el día de hoy.
Isaac bendice a Jacob
34 Esaú tenía cuarenta años cuando se casó con Judit hija de Beerí, el hitita. También se casó con Basemat, hija de un hitita llamado Elón. 35 Estas dos mujeres causaron mucha amargura a Isaac y a Rebeca.

Isaac and Rebekah visit Gerar
26 When a famine gripped the land, a different one from the first famine that occurred in Abraham’s time, Isaac set out toward Gerar and toward King Abimelech of the Philistines. 2 The Lord appeared to him and said, “Don’t go down to Egypt but settle temporarily in the land that I will show you. 3 Stay in this land as an immigrant, and I will be with you and bless you because I will give all of these lands to you and your descendants. I will keep my word, which I gave to your father Abraham. 4 I will give you as many descendants as the stars in the sky, and I will give your descendants all of these lands. All of the nations of the earth will be blessed because of your descendants. 5 I will do this because Abraham obeyed me and kept my orders, my commandments, my statutes, and my instructions.”
6 So Isaac lived in Gerar. 7 When the men who lived there asked about his wife, he said, “She’s my sister,” because he was afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, The men who live there will kill me for Rebekah because she’s very beautiful. 8 After Isaac had lived there for some time, the Philistines’ King Abimelech looked out his window and saw Isaac laughing together with his wife Rebekah.
9 So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, “She’s your wife, isn’t she? How could you say, ‘She’s my sister’?”
Isaac responded, “Because I thought that I might be killed because of her.”
10 Abimelech said, “What are you trying to do to us? Before long, one of the people would have slept with your wife; and you would have made us guilty.” 11 Abimelech gave orders to all of the people, “Anyone who touches this man or his wife will be put to death!”
Isaac’s treaty with the Philistines
12 Isaac planted grain in that land and reaped one hundred shearim[a] that year because the Lord had blessed him. 13 Isaac grew richer and richer until he was extremely wealthy. 14 He had livestock, both flocks and cattle, and many servants. As a result, the Philistines envied him. 15 The Philistines closed up and filled with dirt all of the wells that his father’s servants had dug during his father Abraham’s lifetime. 16 Abimelech said to Isaac, “Move away from us because you have become too powerful among us.”
17 So Isaac moved away from there, camped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there. 18 Isaac dug out again the wells that were dug during the lifetime of his father Abraham. The Philistines had closed them up after Abraham’s death. Isaac gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug wells in the valley and found a well there with fresh water. 20 Isaac’s shepherds argued with Gerar’s shepherds, each claiming, “This is our water.” So Isaac named the well Esek[b] because they quarreled with him. 21 They dug another well and argued about it too, so he named it Sitnah.[c] 22 He left there and dug another well, but they didn’t argue about it, so he named it Rehoboth[d] and said, “Now the Lord has made an open space for us and has made us fertile in the land.”
23 Then he went up from Gerar to Beer-sheba. 24 The Lord appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Don’t be afraid because I am with you. I will bless you, and I will give you many children for my servant Abraham’s sake.” 25 So Isaac built an altar there and worshipped in the Lord’s name. Isaac pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well.
26 But Abimelech set out toward him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his ally and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27 Isaac said to him, “Why have you come after me? You resented me and sent me away from you.”
28 They said, “We now see that the Lord was with you. We propose that there be a formal agreement between us and that we draw up a treaty[e] with you: 29 you must not treat us badly since we haven’t harmed you and since we have treated you well at all times. Then we will send you away peacefully, for you are now blessed by the Lord.” 30 Isaac prepared a banquet for them, and they ate and drank. 31 They got up early in the morning, and they gave each other their word. Isaac sent them off, and they left peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants informed him about the well that they had been digging and said to him, “We found water.” 33 He called it Shibah;[f] therefore, the city’s name has been Beer-sheba[g] until today.
Esau’s wives
34 When Esau was 40 years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 They made life very difficult for Isaac and Rebekah.

Isaac and Abimelek(A)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) 2 The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) 4 I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)
25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)
30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)
