Obedecer la ley o confiar en Jesucristo

3 ¡Ay, gálatas, qué tontos son ustedes! ¡Hasta parece que estuvieran embrujados! Yo mismo les di una explicación clara de cómo murió Jesucristo en la cruz. 2 Sólo quiero que me digan una cosa: Cuando recibieron el Espíritu de Dios ¿fue por obedecer la ley, o por aceptar la buena noticia? ¡Claro que fue por aceptar la buena noticia! 3 Y si esto fue así, ¿por qué no quieren entender? Si para comenzar esta nueva vida necesitaron la ayuda del Espíritu de Dios, ¿por qué ahora quieren terminarla mediante sus propios esfuerzos? 4 ¿Tantos sufrimientos, para nada? ¡Aunque no creo que no hayan servido de nada! 5 Dios no les ha dado el Espíritu, ni ha hecho milagros entre ustedes, sólo porque ustedes obedecen la ley. ¡No! Lo hace porque ustedes aceptaron el mensaje de la buena noticia.

El ejemplo de Abraham

6 Dios aceptó a Abraham porque él confió en Dios. 7 Sepan, entonces, que los verdaderos descendientes de Abraham son todos los que confían en Dios. 8 Desde mucho antes, la Biblia decía que Dios también iba a aceptar a los que no son judíos, siempre y cuando pusieran su confianza en Jesucristo. Por eso Dios le dio a Abraham esta buena noticia: «Gracias a ti, bendeciré a todas las naciones.» 9 Así que Dios bendecirá, por medio de Abraham, a todos los que confían en él como Abraham lo hizo.

10 Pero corren un grave peligro los que buscan agradar a Dios obedeciendo la ley, porque la Biblia dice: «Maldito sea el que no obedezca todo lo que la ley ordena.» 11 Nadie puede agradar a Dios sólo obedeciendo la ley, pues la Biblia dice: «Los que Dios ha aceptado, y que confían en él, vivirán para siempre.»

12 Pero para tener vida eterna por medio de la ley no haría falta confiar en Dios; sólo habría que obedecer la ley. Por eso dice la Biblia: «El que obedece la ley se salvará por su obediencia.» 13 Pero Cristo prefirió recibir por nosotros la maldición que cae sobre el que no obedece la ley. De ese modo nos salvó. Porque la Biblia dice: «Dios maldecirá a cualquiera que muera colgado de un madero.» 14 Por eso, la bendición que Dios prometió darle a Abraham es también para los que no son judíos. Así que, si confiamos en Cristo, recibiremos el Espíritu que Dios nos ha prometido.

La ley y la promesa

15 Hermanos míos, les voy a dar un ejemplo que cualquiera puede entender. Cuando una persona hace un pacto con otra, y lo firma, nadie puede anularlo ni agregarle nada. 16 Ahora bien, las promesas que Dios le hizo a Abraham eran para él y para su descendiente. La Biblia no dice que las promesas eran para «sus descendientes», sino para «su descendencia», la cual es Cristo. 17 Lo que quiero decir es esto: la promesa de Dios no puede cambiarla, ni dejarla sin valor, una ley que Dios dio cuatrocientos treinta años después. 18 Porque si Dios diera lo que prometió sólo a quien obedece la ley, entonces ya no lo daría para cumplir su promesa. Pero lo cierto es que, cuando Dios le aseguró a Abraham que le daría lo prometido, no le pidió nada a cambio.

19 Entonces, ¿para qué sirve la ley? Pues después de hacerle su promesa a Abraham, Dios nos dio la ley para mostrarnos lo que estábamos haciendo mal. Pero esa ley serviría sólo hasta que viniera el descendiente de Abraham, a quien Dios le hizo la promesa. Dios le dio la ley a Moisés por medio de los ángeles, para que él nos la diera a nosotros. 20 Pero cuando Dios le hizo la promesa a Abraham, no usó mensajeros, sino que se la hizo personalmente.

¿Para qué sirvió la ley?

21 Esto no significa que la ley esté en contra de las promesas de Dios. ¡De ninguna manera! Porque si la ley pudiera darnos vida eterna, entonces Dios nos hubiera aceptado por obedecerla. 22 La Biblia dice que el pecado nos domina a todos, de modo que el regalo que Dios prometió es para los que confían en Jesucristo. 23 Antes de eso, la ley fue como una cárcel, donde estuvimos encerrados hasta que vimos que podíamos confiar en Cristo. 24 La ley fue como un maestro que nos guió y llevó hasta Cristo, para que Dios nos aceptara por confiar en él. 25 Pero ahora que ha llegado el tiempo en que podemos confiar en Jesucristo, no hace falta que la ley nos guíe y nos enseñe.

26 Ustedes han confiado en Jesucristo, y por eso todos ustedes son hijos de Dios. 27 Porque cuando fueron bautizados, también quedaron unidos a Cristo, y ahora actúan como él. 28 Así que no importa si son judíos o no lo son, si son esclavos o libres, o si son hombres o mujeres. Si están unidos a Jesucristo, todos son iguales. 29 Y si están unidos a Cristo, entonces son miembros de la gran familia de Abraham, y tienen derecho a recibir las promesas que Dios le hizo.

By Faith, or by Works of the Law?

3 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? (A)It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly (B)portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: (C)Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by (D)hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? (E)Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by[a] the flesh? 4 (F)Did you suffer[b] so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and (G)works miracles among you do so (H)by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as (I)Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

7 Know then that it is (J)those of faith who are (K)the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that (L)God would justify[c] the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, (M)“In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

10 For all who rely on works of the law are (N)under a curse; for it is written, (O)“Cursed be everyone who does not (P)abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that (Q)no one is justified before God by the law, for (R)“The righteous shall live by faith.”[d] 12 But the law is not of faith, rather (S)“The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ (T)redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, (U)“Cursed is everyone who is hanged (V)on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might (W)come to the Gentiles, so that (X)we might receive (Y)the promised Spirit[e] through faith.

The Law and the Promise

15 (Z)To give a human example, brothers:[f] (AA)even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 16 Now (AB)the promises were made (AC)to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, (AD)“And to your offspring,” who is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came (AE)430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as (AF)to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but (AG)God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

19 Why then the law? (AH)It was added because of transgressions, (AI)until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was (AJ)put in place through angels (AK)by an intermediary. 20 Now (AL)an intermediary implies more than one, but (AM)God is one.

21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For (AN)if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture (AO)imprisoned everything under sin, so that (AP)the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given (AQ)to those who believe.

23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, (AR)imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, (AS)the law was our (AT)guardian until Christ came, (AU)in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus (AV)you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as (AW)were baptized (AX)into Christ have (AY)put on Christ. 28 (AZ)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave[g] nor free, (BA)there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And (BB)if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, (BC)heirs according to promise.

3 You stupid Galatians! Who has put you under a spell? Before your very eyes Yeshua the Messiah was clearly portrayed as having been put to death as a criminal! 2 I want to know from you just this one thing: did you receive the Spirit by legalistic observance of Torah commands or by trusting in what you heard and being faithful to it? 3 Are you that stupid? Having begun with the Spirit’s power, do you think you can reach the goal under your own power? 4 Have you suffered so much for nothing? If that’s the way you think, your suffering certainly will have been for nothing! 5 What about God, who supplies you with the Spirit and works miracles among you — does he do it because of your legalistic observance of Torah commands or because you trust in what you heard and are faithful to it?

6 It was the same with Avraham: “He trusted in God and was faithful to him, and that was credited to his account as righteousness.”[a] 7 Be assured, then, that it is those who live by trusting and being faithful who are really children of Avraham. 8 Also the Tanakh, foreseeing that God would consider the Gentiles righteous when they live by trusting and being faithful, told the Good News to Avraham in advance by saying, “In connection with you, all the Goyim will be blessed.”[b] 9 So then, those who rely on trusting and being faithful are blessed along with Avraham, who trusted and was faithful.

10 For everyone who depends on legalistic observance of Torah commands lives under a curse, since it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not keep on doing everything written in the Scroll of the Torah.”[c] 11 Now it is evident that no one comes to be declared righteous by God through legalism, since “The person who is righteous will attain life by trusting and being faithful.”[d] 12 Furthermore, legalism is not based on trusting and being faithful, but on [a misuse of] the text that says, “Anyone who does these things will attain life through them.”[e] 13 The Messiah redeemed us from the curse pronounced in the Torah by becoming cursed on our behalf; for the Tanakh says, “Everyone who hangs from a stake comes under a curse.”[f] 14 Yeshua the Messiah did this so that in union with him the Gentiles might receive the blessing announced to Avraham, so that through trusting and being faithful, we might receive what was promised, namely, the Spirit.

15 Brothers, let me make an analogy from everyday life: when someone swears an oath, no one else can set it aside or add to it. 16 Now the promises were made to Avraham and to his seed. It doesn’t say, “and to seeds,” as if to many; on the contrary, it speaks of one — “and to your seed”[g] — and this “one” is the Messiah. 17 Here is what I am saying: the legal part of the Torah, which came into being 430 years later, does not nullify an oath sworn by God, so as to abolish the promise. 18 For if the inheritance comes from the legal part of the Torah, it no longer comes from a promise. But God gave it to Avraham through a promise.

19 So then, why the legal part of the Torah? It was added in order to create transgressions, until the coming of the seed about whom the promise had been made. Moreover, it was handed down through angels and a mediator. 20 Now a mediator implies more than one, but God is one.

21 Does this mean that the legal part of the Torah stands in opposition to God’s promises? Heaven forbid! For if the legal part of the Torah which God gave had had in itself the power to give life, then righteousness really would have come by legalistically following such a Torah. 22 But instead, the Tanakh shuts up everything under sin; so that what had been promised might be given, on the basis of Yeshua the Messiah’s trusting faithfulness, to those who continue to be trustingly faithful.

23 Now before the time for this trusting faithfulness came, we were imprisoned in subjection to the system which results from perverting the Torah into legalism, kept under guard until this yet-to-come trusting faithfulness would be revealed. 24 Accordingly, the Torah functioned as a custodian until the Messiah came, so that we might be declared righteous on the ground of trusting and being faithful. 25 But now that the time for this trusting faithfulness has come, we are no longer under a custodian.

26 For in union with the Messiah, you are all children of God through this trusting faithfulness; 27 because as many of you as were immersed into the Messiah have clothed yourselves with the Messiah, in whom 28 there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor freeman, neither male nor female; for in union with the Messiah Yeshua, you are all one. 29 Also, if you belong to the Messiah, you are seed of Avraham and heirs according to the promise.

Faith or Works of the Law

3 You foolish(A) Galatians!(B) Who has bewitched you?(C) Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.(D) 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit(E) by the works of the law,(F) or by believing what you heard?(G) 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?[a] 4 Have you experienced[b] so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles(H) among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?(I) 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[c](J)

7 Understand, then, that those who have faith(K) are children of Abraham.(L) 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[d](M) 9 So those who rely on faith(N) are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.(O)

10 For all who rely on the works of the law(P) are under a curse,(Q) as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”[e](R) 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God,(S) because “the righteous will live by faith.”[f](T) 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”[g](U) 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law(V) by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”[h](W) 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,(X) so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.(Y)

The Law and the Promise

15 Brothers and sisters,(Z) let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.(AA) Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”[i](AB) meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years(AC) later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise;(AD) but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

19 Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions(AE) until the Seed(AF) to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels(AG) and entrusted to a mediator.(AH) 20 A mediator,(AI) however, implies more than one party; but God is one.

21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not!(AJ) For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.(AK) 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin,(AL) so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

Children of God

23 Before the coming of this faith,[j] we were held in custody(AM) under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.(AN) 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came(AO) that we might be justified by faith.(AP) 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.(AQ)

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God(AR) through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ(AS) have clothed yourselves with Christ.(AT) 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free,(AU) nor is there male and female,(AV) for you are all one in Christ Jesus.(AW) 29 If you belong to Christ,(AX) then you are Abraham’s seed,(AY) and heirs(AZ) according to the promise.(BA)
