Paulus' gebed voor de gemeente in Filippi

1 Deze brief is van Paulus en Timoteüs, dienaren van Jezus Christus.[a] Wij doen de groeten aan alle mensen in Filippi die in Jezus Christus geloven, en aan hun leiders. 2 Ik bid dat God, die onze Vader is, in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn. En dat jullie vol zullen zijn van de vrede van God de Vader en van de Heer Jezus Christus.

3 Elke keer als ik aan jullie denk, dank ik mijn God. 4 Altijd als ik voor jullie bid, ben ik blij over jullie. 5 Want jullie hebben het goede nieuws geloofd vanaf de eerste dag dat jullie het hoorden. En jullie geloven het nog steeds. 6 God is in jullie een goed werk begonnen. En ik weet zeker dat Hij dat werk ook zal afmaken. Hij zal met jullie bezig blijven, totdat Jezus Christus terugkomt. 7 Het is voor mij heel vanzelfsprekend om zo over jullie te denken. Dat komt doordat jullie en ik heel veel van elkaar houden. Want ik weet dat de liefde van God die in mij is, ook in jullie is. Want jullie zijn één met mij, nu ik gevangen zit en ik mij bij de keizer moet verdedigen en ik moet uitleggen wat ik precies geloof. 8 God weet dat ik er met de liefde van Christus naar verlang om jullie weer te zien.

9 Ik bid dat jullie liefde aldoor zal blijven groeien. Want daardoor zal ook jullie wijsheid groeien. Dan zullen jullie de dingen van God steeds beter begrijpen. 10 Jullie zullen steeds beter gaan zien welke dingen werkelijk belangrijk zijn. Daardoor zullen jullie zuiver en volmaakt zijn op de dag dat Christus terugkomt. 11 Dan zal aan jullie te zien zijn hoe God jullie heeft veranderd sinds Hij jullie heeft vrijgesproken van schuld. En dat allemaal dankzij Jezus Christus. Daardoor zullen de mensen God eren en prijzen.

Het nut van Paulus' gevangenschap

12 Broeders en zusters, het is niet erg dat ik gevangen zit. Want door alles wat er met mij is gebeurd, heeft het goede nieuws zich nog verder verspreid. 13 Want alle mensen aan het hof van de keizer hier in Rome en alle anderen hebben gehoord waarom ik gevangen zit. Namelijk vanwege mijn geloof in Christus. 14 En doordat ik gevangen zit, hebben de meeste broeders en zusters nieuw vertrouwen in de Heer gekregen. Ze zijn niet meer bang om in de gevangenis te komen. Ze durven zonder vrees het woord van God aan de mensen te vertellen.

15 Sommige mensen vertellen de boodschap van God alleen maar omdat ze er jaloers op zijn hoe God mij gebruikt. Ze willen het beter doen dan ik. Maar andere mensen doen het met goede bedoelingen. 16+17 Zij vertellen uit liefde over Christus, omdat ze weten dat het eigenlijk míjn taak is om het goede nieuws te brengen. Maar die andere mensen vertellen uit eigenbelang over Christus. Ze hebben oneerlijke bedoelingen. Ze willen mij jaloers maken. Ze willen het mij extra moeilijk maken dat ik in de gevangenis zit.

18 Maar wat maakt het uit? Want of het nu met eerlijke of oneerlijke bedoelingen is, het gaat erom dat de mensen het nieuws van Christus te horen krijgen. En daarom ben ik er blij over. En ik zal er ook blij over blijven. 19 Want ik weet dat die blijdschap mij goed zal doen. Ook jullie gebeden en de hulp van de Geest van Jezus Christus helpen mij.

Oproep om vol te houden

20 Ik verlang en hoop vurig dat ik niets zal doen waarvoor ik mij zal hoeven te schamen. Ik hoop dat ik zoals altijd vol geloof en zonder vrees voor mijn geloof zal durven uitkomen. Ik wil dat Christus altijd de eer zal krijgen. Dat kan zijn door mijn leven, maar dat kan ook zijn door mijn dood. 21 Leven betekent voor mij: leven voor Christus. Maar als ik sterf, betekent dat voor mij nog iets veel beters. Want dan ben ik bij de Heer. 22 Als ik blijf leven, kan ik werken met goed resultaat. Ik weet niet wat ik liever heb. 23 Alle twee zijn aantrekkelijk: ik wil graag uit dit leven vertrekken om bij Christus te kunnen zijn. Dat is voor mij het allerbeste. 24 Maar nog blijven leven is beter voor júllie. 25 Daarom vertrouw ik er op dat ik zal blijven leven. Dan kan ik bij jullie zijn. Dan kan ik jullie helpen om verder te groeien in geloof en in blijdschap. 26 Als ik weer bij jullie kan komen, zullen jullie redenen genoeg hebben om God voor mij te danken in Jezus Christus.

27 Maar jullie moeten leven op een manier die past bij het goede nieuws van Christus. Het moet niet uitmaken of ik naar jullie toe kom of dat ik hier blijf. Ik wil van jullie horen dat jullie één zijn met elkaar. En dat jullie je samen inspannen voor het geloof in het goede nieuws. 28 Laat je niet bang maken door de mensen die jullie tegenwerken. Want als jullie niet bang zijn, zal dat die mensen duidelijk maken dat zíj verloren gaan. Maar voor jullie zal het een teken zijn dat God júllie heeft gered. 29 Want God is goed voor jullie geweest. Hij heeft jullie niet alleen de kracht gegeven om in Christus te kunnen geloven. Hij heeft jullie óók de kracht gegeven om voor Hem te kunnen lijden. 30 Want jullie zullen dezelfde strijd hebben die jullie bij mij hebben gezien en waarover ik jullie nu schrijf.

  1. Filippenzen 1:1 'Christus' is niet Jezus' achternaam! Het woord 'Christus' is Grieks en betekent 'Gezalfde'. (Het Nieuwe Testament is in het Grieks geschreven). 'De gezalfde' is in de Joodse Boeken de man die speciaal door God met zijn Geest is gevuld ('gezalfd') om Israël te redden. In het Hebreeuws, de taal waarin het Oude Testament is geschreven, werd hij de 'Messias' genoemd, wat hetzelfde betekent.

1 Från Paulus och Timoteus, Kristi Jesu tjänare, till alla de heliga i Kristus Jesus som bor i Filippi, tillsammans med församlingsledarna och församlingstjänarna. 2 Nåd vare med er och frid från Gud, vår Fader, och Herren Jesus Kristus.

Tacksägelse och förbön

3 Jag tackar min Gud var gång jag tänker på er. 4 Så ofta jag ber för er alla gör jag det alltid med glädje, 5 eftersom ni har varit med i arbetet för evangeliet från första dagen ända till nu. 6 Jag är övertygad om att han som har börjat ett gott verk i er också skall fullborda det intill Kristi Jesu dag. 7 Det är inte mer än rätt att jag tänker så om er alla, ty jag har er i mitt hjärta. Både när jag bär bojor och när jag försvarar och befäster evangeliet delar ni allesammans nåden med mig. 8 Ja, Gud är mitt vittne att jag längtar efter er alla av hela mitt hjärta, i Kristus Jesus. 9 Och min bön är att er kärlek mer och mer skall överflöda och leda er fram till insikt och klart omdöme, 10 så att ni kan avgöra vad som är rätt och vara rena och fläckfria på Kristi dag, 11 rika på rättfärdighetens frukt som Jesus Kristus ger, Gud till ära och pris.

Fånge för Kristi skull

12 Jag vill att ni skall veta, bröder, att det som har hänt mig snarare har lett till framgång för evangeliet. 13 Så har hela pretoriet[a] och alla andra kommit att förstå att det är för Kristi skull jag sitter fängslad. 14 Min fångenskap har gjort de flesta av bröderna övertygade i Herren, så att de vågar predika Guds ord ännu mer oförskräckt.

15 En del predikar visserligen Kristus för att de är avundsjuka och söker strid, men en del gör det i god avsikt, 16 av kärlek, eftersom de vet att jag är satt till att försvara evangelium. 17 De andra söker strid och predikar Kristus av orena motiv och tror att de kan göra min fångenskap tyngre. 18 Än sen? Kristus blir ändå på ett eller annat sätt predikad, för syns skull eller uppriktigt, och det är jag glad över.

Och jag vill fortsätta att glädja mig, 19 ty jag vet att detta kommer att leda till min frälsning, därför att ni ber för mig och Jesu Kristi Ande hjälper mig. 20 Det är också min längtan och mitt hopp att jag inte på något sätt skall stå där med skam, utan att Kristus nu som alltid skall av mig frimodigt förhärligas i min kropp, vare sig jag lever eller dör. 21 Ty för mig är livet Kristus och döden en vinst. 22 Men om livet här på jorden innebär att mitt arbete bär frukt, då vet jag inte vad jag skall välja. 23 Jag dras åt båda hållen. Jag skulle vilja bryta upp och vara hos Kristus, det vore mycket bättre. 24 Men för er skull är det nödvändigt att jag får leva kvar. 25 Och då jag är övertygad om det, vet jag att jag skall leva och bli kvar hos er alla och hjälpa er till framsteg och glädje i tron. 26 När jag är hos er igen, kan ni få ännu större anledning att i Kristus Jesus prisa er lyckliga för min skull.

Kämpa för tron

27 Lev nu bara på ett sätt som är värdigt Kristi evangelium, så att jag, vare sig jag besöker er eller inte, får höra att ni står fasta i en och samme ande och i ett och samma sinne kämpar för tron på evangelium 28 utan att på något sätt låta er skrämmas av motståndarna. Det blir för dem ett tecken på att de går förlorade, men för er ett tecken på att ni blir frälsta, och det av Gud. 29 Ty för Kristi skull har ni fått nåd, inte bara att tro på honom utan också att lida för hans skull, 30 eftersom ni har samma strid att utkämpa som ni såg att jag hade och nu hör att jag har.

1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(F)

Thanksgiving and Prayer

3 I thank my God every time I remember you.(G) 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray(H) with joy 5 because of your partnership(I) in the gospel from the first day(J) until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion(K) until the day of Christ Jesus.(L)

7 It is right(M) for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart(N) and, whether I am in chains(O) or defending(P) and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8 God can testify(Q) how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

9 And this is my prayer: that your love(R) may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,(S) 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,(T) 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness(U) that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

Paul’s Chains Advance the Gospel

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[b] that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard[c] and to everyone else that I am in chains(V) for Christ. 14 And because of my chains,(W) most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.(X)

15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.(Y) 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition,(Z) not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.(AA) 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers(AB) and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ(AC) what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.[d](AD) 20 I eagerly expect(AE) and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage(AF) so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body,(AG) whether by life or by death.(AH) 21 For to me, to live is Christ(AI) and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart(AJ) and be with Christ,(AK) which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.

Life Worthy of the Gospel

27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy(AL) of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm(AM) in the one Spirit,[e] striving together(AN) as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you(AO) on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer(AP) for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle(AQ) you saw(AR) I had, and now hear(AS) that I still have.
