8 These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king.
2 Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush.
3 Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty.
4 Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males.
5 Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males.
6 Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males.
7 And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males.
8 And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males.
9 Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males.
10 And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males.
11 And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males.
12 And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males.
13 And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males.
14 Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.
15 And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.
16 Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.
17 And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.
18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;
19 And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty;
20 Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.
21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.
22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.
23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.
24 Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,
25 And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered:
26 I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents;
27 Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold.
28 And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the Lord; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the Lord God of your fathers.
29 Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.
30 So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.
33 Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;
34 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time.
35 Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the Lord.
36 And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.

Am căutat între popor şi preoţi, şi n-am găsit acolo pe niciunul din fiii lui(C) Levi. 16 Atunci am trimis să cheme pe căpeteniile Eliezer, Ariel, Şemaia, Elnatan, Iarib, Elnatan, Natan, Zaharia şi Meşulam şi pe învăţătorii Ioiarib şi Elnatan. 17 I-am trimis la căpetenia Ido, care locuia la Casifia, şi am pus în gura lor ce trebuiau să spună lui Ido şi fraţilor săi slujitori ai Templului care erau la Casifia, ca să ne aducă slujitori pentru Casa Dumnezeului nostru. 18 Şi, fiindcă mâna cea bună a Dumnezeului nostru era peste noi, ne-au adus(D) pe Serebia, bărbat cu minte, dintre fiii lui Mahli, fiul lui Levi, fiul lui Israel, şi cu el pe fiii şi fraţii lui, în număr de optsprezece; 19 pe Haşabia şi cu el pe Isaia, dintre fiii lui Merari, fraţii săi şi fiii lor, în număr de douăzeci, 20 şi dintre slujitorii(E) Templului, pe care David şi căpeteniile îi puseseră în slujba leviţilor, două sute douăzeci de slujitori ai Templului, toţi numiţi pe nume. 21 Acolo, la râul Ahava, am vestit(F) un post de smerire(G) înaintea Dumnezeului nostru, ca să cerem de la El o(H) călătorie fericită pentru noi, pentru copiii noştri şi pentru tot ce era al nostru. 22 Mi-era ruşine(I) să cer împăratului o oaste de însoţire şi călăreţi ca să ne ocrotească împotriva vrăjmaşului pe drum, căci spusesem împăratului: „Mâna(J) Dumnezeului nostru este, spre binele(K) lor, peste toţi cei ce-L caută, dar puterea şi mânia(L) Lui sunt peste toţi cei ce-L părăsesc(M).” 23 Pentru aceasta am postit şi am chemat pe Dumnezeul nostru. Şi El ne-a ascultat(N). 24 Am ales douăsprezece căpetenii dintre preoţi, pe Şerabia, Haşabia şi zece din fraţii lor. 25 Am cântărit înaintea lor argintul(O), aurul şi uneltele date în dar pentru Casa Dumnezeului nostru de către împărat, sfetnicii şi căpeteniile lui şi de toţi cei din Israel care se aflau acolo. 26 Am dat în mâinile lor şase sute cincizeci de talanţi de argint, unelte de argint de o sută de talanţi, o sută de talanţi de aur, 27 douăzeci de pahare de aur de o mie de darici şi două vase de aramă frumos poleită, tot atât de scumpă ca aurul. 28 Apoi le-am zis: „Sunteţi închinaţi(P) Domnului. Vasele acestea sunt lucruri sfinte(Q) şi argintul şi aurul acesta sunt un dar de bunăvoie făcut Domnului, Dumnezeului părinţilor voştri. 29 Fiţi cu ochii în patru şi luaţi lucrurile acestea sub paza voastră, până le veţi cântări înaintea căpeteniilor preoţilor şi înaintea leviţilor, şi înaintea capilor de familii ai lui Israel, la Ierusalim, în cămările Casei Domnului.” 30 Şi preoţii şi leviţii au luat greutatea argintului, aurului şi vaselor, ca să le ducă la Ierusalim, în Casa Dumnezeului nostru. 31 Am plecat de la râul Ahava ca să ne ducem la Ierusalim în a douăsprezecea zi a lunii întâi. Mâna(R) Dumnezeului nostru a fost peste noi şi ne-a păzit de loviturile vrăjmaşului şi de orice piedică pe drum. 32 Am ajuns(S) la Ierusalim şi ne-am odihnit acolo trei zile. 33 În ziua a patra, am cântărit(T) în Casa Dumnezeului nostru argintul, aurul şi vasele pe care le-am încredinţat lui Meremot, fiul lui Urie, preotul. Cu el era Eleazar, fiul lui Fineas, şi împreună cu ei leviţii Iozabad, fiul lui Iosua, şi Noadia, fiul lui Binui. 34 Fiind cercetate toate după număr şi greutate, au pus atunci în scris greutatea tuturor. 35 Fiii robiei întorşi din robie au adus, ca ardere-de-tot(U) Dumnezeului lui Israel, doisprezece viţei pentru tot Israelul, nouăzeci şi şase de berbeci, şaptezeci şi şapte de miei şi doisprezece ţapi, ca jertfe ispăşitoare, toate ca ardere-de-tot Domnului. 36 Au dat poruncile(V) împăratului dregătorilor împăratului şi cârmuitorilor de dincoace de Râu, care au ajutat pe popor şi Casa lui Dumnezeu.

8 These are the heads of their fathers' houses, and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylonia, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king: 2 Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. Of the sons of (A)Ithamar, Daniel. Of the sons of David, (B)Hattush. 3 Of the sons of Shecaniah, who was of the sons of (C)Parosh, Zechariah, with whom were registered 150 men. 4 (D)Of the sons of Pahath-moab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men. 5 Of the sons of Zattu,[a] Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men. 6 Of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men. 7 Of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men. 8 Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him 80 men. 9 Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men. 10 Of the sons of Bani,[b] Shelomith the son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men. 11 (E)Of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah, the son of Bebai, and with him 28 men. 12 Of the sons of Azgad, Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men. 13 Of the sons of Adonikam, those who came later, their names being Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men. 14 Of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.
Ezra Sends for Levites
15 I gathered them to the river that runs to (F)Ahava, and there we camped three days. As I reviewed the people and the priests, I found there (G)none of the sons of Levi. 16 Then I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and (H)Meshullam, leading men, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of insight, 17 and sent them to Iddo, the leading man at the place Casiphia, telling them what to say to Iddo and his brothers and[c] the temple servants at the place Casiphia, namely, to send us ministers for the house of our God. 18 And (I)by the good hand of our God on us, they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of (J)Mahli the son of Levi, son of Israel, namely Sherebiah with his sons and kinsmen, 18; 19 also (K)Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of (L)the sons of Merari, with his kinsmen and their sons, 20; 20 (M)besides 220 of the temple servants, whom David and his officials had set apart to attend the Levites. These were all (N)mentioned by name.
Fasting and Prayer for Protection
21 (O)Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river (P)Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, (Q)to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. 22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, (R)“The hand of our God is for good on (S)all who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.” 23 So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.
Priests to Guard Offerings
24 Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests: (T)Sherebiah, (U)Hashabiah, and ten of their kinsmen with them. 25 And I weighed out to them the (V)silver and the gold and the vessels, the offering for the house of our God that the king and his (W)counselors and his lords and all Israel there present had offered. 26 (X)I weighed out into their hand 650 talents[d] of silver, and silver vessels worth 200 talents,[e] and 100 talents of gold, 27 20 bowls of gold worth 1,000 darics,[f] and two vessels of fine bright bronze as precious as gold. 28 And I said to them, (Y)“You are holy to the Lord, and (Z)the vessels are holy, and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your fathers. 29 Guard them and keep them until you weigh them before the chief priests and the Levites and the heads of fathers' houses in Israel at Jerusalem, (AA)within the chambers of the house of the Lord.” 30 So the priests and the Levites (AB)took over the weight of the silver and the gold and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem, to the house of our God.
31 Then we departed from the river Ahava (AC)on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. (AD)The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from ambushes by the way. 32 (AE)We came to Jerusalem, and there we remained three days. 33 On the fourth day, within the house of our God, the silver and the gold and the vessels were (AF)weighed into the hands of (AG)Meremoth the priest, son of Uriah, and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas, and with them were the Levites, (AH)Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of (AI)Binnui. 34 The whole was counted and weighed, and the weight of everything was recorded.
35 At that time (AJ)those who had come from captivity, the returned exiles, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel, (AK)twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and as a sin offering twelve male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36 (AL)They also delivered the king's commissions to the king's (AM)satraps[g] and to the governors of the province Beyond the River, and they aided the people and the house of God.
