Ezra Sent to Teach the People

7 Now after this, (A)in the reign of (B)Artaxerxes king of Persia, (C)Ezra the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, 2 son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, 3 son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, 4 son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, 5 son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest— 6 this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe (D)skilled in the Law of Moses that the Lord, the God of Israel, had given, and the king granted him all that he asked, (E)for the hand of the Lord his God was on him.

7 And there went up also to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king, some of the people of Israel, and (F)some of the priests and (G)Levites, the singers and gatekeepers, and the temple (H)servants. 8 And Ezra[a] came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylonia, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, (I)for the good hand of his God was on him. 10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it (J)and to (K)teach his statutes and rules in Israel.

11 This is a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, a man learned in matters of the commandments of the Lord and his statutes for Israel:[b] 12 “Artaxerxes, (L)king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the (M)scribe of the Law of the God of heaven. Peace.[c] (N)And now 13 (O)I make a decree that anyone of the people of Israel or their priests or Levites in my kingdom, who freely offers to go to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14 For you are sent by the king (P)and his seven counselors to make inquiries about Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God, which is in your hand, 15 and also to carry the silver and gold that the king (Q)and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, (R)whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16 (S)with all the silver and gold that you shall find in the whole province of Babylonia, and (T)with the freewill offerings of the people and the priests, vowed willingly for the house of their God that is in Jerusalem. 17 With this money, then, you shall with all diligence buy bulls, rams, and lambs, with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and (U)you shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God that is in Jerusalem. 18 Whatever seems good to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do, according to the will of your God. 19 The vessels that have been given you for the service of the house of your God, you shall deliver before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And whatever else is required for the house of your God, which it falls to you to provide, you may provide it out of the king's treasury.

21 “And I, Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers in the province Beyond the River: Whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, requires of you, let it be done with all diligence, 22 up to 100 talents[d] of silver, 100 cors[e] of wheat, 100 baths[f] of wine, 100 baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much. 23 Whatever is decreed by the God of heaven, let it be done in full for the house of the God of heaven, lest his wrath be against the realm of the king and his sons. 24 We also notify you that it shall not be lawful to impose (V)tribute, custom, or toll on anyone of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the doorkeepers, the temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.

25 “And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God that is in your hand, (W)appoint magistrates and judges who may judge all the people in the province Beyond the River, all such as know the laws of your God. (X)And those who do not know them, you shall teach. 26 Whoever will not obey the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be strictly executed on him, whether for death or for banishment or for confiscation of his goods or for imprisonment.”

27 (Y)Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, (Z)who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king, to beautify the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem, 28 (AA)and who extended to me his steadfast love before the king and his counselors, and before all the king's mighty officers. I took courage, for the hand of the Lord my God was on me, and I gathered leading men from Israel to go up with me.

Ezra Journeys from Babylon to Jerusalem

7 (A)Now after these things, in the reign of (B)Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra went up to Jerusalem; Ezra was the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, 2 son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, 3 son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, 4 son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, 5 son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest. 6 So this Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a (C)scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all [a]he requested (D)because the hand of the Lord his God was upon him. 7 (E)Some of the sons of Israel and some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, (F)because the good hand of his God was upon him. 10 For Ezra had [b]firmly resolved to study the Law of the Lord and to practice it, and (G)to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.

King’s Decree on Behalf of Ezra

11 Now this is the copy of the letter which King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, [c]learned in the words of the commandments of the Lord and His statutes to Israel: 12 “[d]Artaxerxes, (H)king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, [e]perfect peace. And now 13 (I)I have issued a decree that any of the people of Israel and their priests and the Levites in my kingdom who are willing to go to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14 Since you are sent [f]on the part of the king and his (J)seven advisers to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God which is in your hand, 15 and to bring the silver and gold, which the king and his advisers have voluntarily given to the God of Israel, (K)whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16 with (L)all the silver and gold which you find in the entire province of Babylon, along (M)with the [g]voluntary offering of the people and of the priests, who (N)offered willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem; 17 with this money, therefore, you shall diligently buy bulls, rams, and lambs, (O)with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and (P)offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. 18 And whatever seems good to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do according to the will of your God. 19 Also the utensils which are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver in full before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And the rest of the needs of the house of your God, for which it may be incumbent upon you to provide, (Q)provide for them from the royal treasury.

21 “I myself, King Artaxerxes, issue a decree to all the treasurers who are in the provinces beyond the Euphrates River, that whatever Ezra the priest, (R)the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it shall be done diligently, 22 up to [h]a hundred talents of silver, [i]a hundred kors of wheat, [j]a hundred baths of wine, [k]a hundred baths of anointing oil, and salt [l]as needed. 23 Whatever is [m]commanded by the God of heaven, it shall be done with zeal for the house of the God of heaven, (S)so that there will not be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons. 24 We also inform you that (T)it is not allowed to impose tax, tribute, or toll (U)on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.

25 “And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God which is in your hand, (V)appoint magistrates and judges so that they may judge all the people who are in the province beyond the Euphrates River, that is, all those who know the laws of your God; and you may (W)teach anyone who is ignorant of them. 26 And (X)whoever does not comply with the Law of your God and the law of the king, judgment is to be executed upon him strictly, whether for death or for banishment, or for [n]confiscation of property or for imprisonment.”

The King’s Kindness

27 Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, (Y)who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to glorify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem, 28 and (Z)has extended favor to me before the king and his counselors and before all the king’s mighty officials. So I was strengthened according to (AA)the hand of the Lord my God that was upon me, and I gathered [o]leading men from Israel to go up with me.

7 Depois disso,[a] durante o reinado do rei Artaxerxes[b] da Pérsia, Esdras partiu da Babilônia para Jerusalém. Ele era descendente de Seraías, o qual era filho de Azarias, o qual era filho de Hilquias, 2 o qual era filho de Salum, o qual era filho de Zadoque, o qual era filho de Aitube, 3 o qual era filho de Amarias, o qual era filho de Azarias, o qual era filho de Meraiote, 4 o qual era filho de Zeraías, o qual era filho de Uzi, o qual era filho de Buqui, 5 o qual era filho de Abisua, o qual era filho de Fineias, o qual era filho de Eleazar e do sumo sacerdote Arão.

6 Esdras era um escrivão, perito na lei de Moisés, a mesma que o SENHOR, Deus de Israel, tinha dado ao seu povo. O SENHOR, Deus de Esdras, estava com ele e por isso o rei lhe concedeu tudo o que pediu. Então Esdras partiu da Babilônia para Jerusalém. 7 Esdras voltou para Jerusalém no sétimo ano de governo do rei Artaxerxes acompanhado de alguns sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, guardas e ministros do templo. 8 Esdras chegou a Jerusalém no quinto mês do sétimo ano[c] do reinado de Artaxerxes. 9 Esdras saiu da Babilônia no primeiro dia do primeiro mês e chegou a Jerusalém no primeiro dia do quinto mês, pois contou com a proteção de Deus. 10 Esdras se dedicava a estudar a lei do SENHOR, a praticá-la e a ensinar aos israelitas as suas leis e mandamentos.

A carta do rei Artaxerxes a Esdras

11 Esta é uma cópia da carta que o rei Artaxerxes deu a Esdras, sacerdote e escrivão dos mandamentos e leis que o SENHOR deu a Israel:[d]

12 “Do Rei Artaxerxes para Esdras, o qual é sacerdote e escrivão da lei do Deus do céu: cordial saudação.

13 “Tenho ordenado que toda pessoa, sacerdote ou levita de Israel que habite no meu reino e queira ir com você a Jerusalém, pode fazê-lo.

14 “Esdras, você é perito na lei de Deus e por isso os meus sete conselheiros e eu o enviamos para Judá e para Jerusalém para ver como está obedecendo seu povo à lei de Deus que lhe foi confiada. 15 Você foi escolhido para levar o ouro e a prata que os meus conselheiros e eu temos oferecido ao Deus de Israel, que está em Jerusalém. 16 Também deve ir por todas as províncias da Babilônia recolhendo as ofertas do povo e dos sacerdotes para o templo de Deus em Jerusalém.

17 “Use esse dinheiro para comprar bois, carneiros e cordeiros, com as suas respectivas ofertas de cereal e vinho, para oferecer no altar do templo do seu Deus em Jerusalém. 18 Você e os outros judeus podem gastar como vocês quiserem a prata e o ouro que sobrar, mas que seja de acordo com a vontade do seu Deus. 19 Certifique-se de levar ao templo de Deus em Jerusalém tudo o que lhe foi entregue para adorá-lo no seu templo. 20 O que ainda precisar para o templo do seu Deus, será dado pela tesouraria do rei.

21 “Agora, eu, o Rei Artaxerxes dou esta outra ordem: que os ministros que guardam o dinheiro do rei na província oeste do rio Eufrates deem a Esdras tudo o que ele pedir. Ele é sacerdote e escrivão da lei do Deus do céu. Cumpram a minha ordem cabalmente e com rapidez. 22 Deem a Esdras até 3.300 quilos[e] de prata, 22.000 litros de trigo, 2.200 litros[f] de azeite de oliva e todo o sal que Esdras pedir. 23 Vocês devem suprir rapidamente a Esdras tudo o que o Deus do céu lhe ordenou que busque para o seu templo. Não queremos que Deus se irrite com o meu reino nem com os meus filhos.

24 “Quero que vocês saibam que os sacerdotes, os levitas, os cantores, os guardas, e os ministros deste templo de Deus não devem pagar impostos, contribuição ou pedágios. 25 Esdras, você tem a sabedoria que Deus lhe deu, por isso o autorizo para nomear magistrados e juízes. Eles julgarão a todas as pessoas que vivem na província oeste do rio Eufrates. Estas pessoas são as que praticam e aceitam as leis do seu Deus. E se alguém desconhece essas leis, ensine-as. 26 Qualquer pessoa que desobedeça à lei do seu Deus, ou à lei do rei, deve ser castigada. Dependendo da falta, será castigada com morte, desterro, uma multa ou prisão”.

Esdras louva a Deus pela carta do rei

27 [g] Esdras disse:

—Bendito seja o SENHOR, o Deus de nossos antepassados. Deus pôs no coração do rei a ideia de honrar o templo do SENHOR em Jerusalém. 28 Ele me mostrou o seu amor fiel diante do rei, os seus conselheiros e altos ministros. O SENHOR meu Deus estava comigo, e por isso fui corajoso. Eu reuni os líderes de Israel para que fossem comigo para Jerusalém.
