¹³ Now be it known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will not pay ^(A)tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be impaired.

²⁴ We also notify you that it shall not be lawful to impose ^(A)tribute, custom, or toll on anyone of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the doorkeepers, the temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.

⁶ For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. ^7 (A)Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

⁴ And there were those who said, “We have borrowed money for ^(A)the king's tax on our fields and our vineyards.

²⁵ He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, ^(A)“What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or ^(B)tax? From their sons or from others?”

Jesus Calls Matthew

^9 (A)As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called ^(B)Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

²⁰ And mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, ^(A)who ruled over the whole province Beyond the River, to whom ^(B)tribute, custom, and toll were paid.
