¹⁰ And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, ^(A)according to the directions of David king of Israel.

^10 (A)For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see ^(B)the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

^(C)“These seven ^(D)are the eyes of the Lord, ^(E)which range through the whole earth.”

²⁴ And the chiefs of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and ^(A)Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brothers who stood opposite them, ^(B)to praise and to give thanks, ^(C)according to the commandment of David ^(D)the man of God, ^(E)watch by watch. ²⁵ Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers standing guard at ^(F)the storehouses of the gates. ²⁶ These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and in the days of ^(G)Nehemiah the governor and of ^(H)Ezra, the priest and scribe.

¹⁵ The singers, the sons of Asaph, were in their place ^(A)according to the command of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's ^(B)seer; ^(C)and the gatekeepers were at each gate. They did not need to depart from their service, for their brothers the Levites prepared for them.

^25 (A)And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, harps, and lyres, ^(B)according to the commandment of David and of Gad ^(C)the king's seer and of ^(D)Nathan the prophet, for the commandment was from the Lord through his prophets. ²⁶ The Levites stood with ^(E)the instruments of David, ^(F)and the priests with the trumpets.

David Organizes the Musicians

25 David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of ^(A)Asaph, and of ^(B)Heman, and of ^(C)Jeduthun, who ^(D)prophesied with lyres, with ^(E)harps, and with cymbals. The list of those who did the work and of their duties was: ² Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah, sons of Asaph, under the direction of Asaph, who ^(F)prophesied under the direction of the king. ³ Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,^[a] Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun, ^(G)who prophesied with the lyre in thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. ⁴ Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth. ⁵ All these were the sons of Heman ^(H)the king's seer, according to the promise of God to exalt him, for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. ⁶ They were all under the direction of their father in the music in the house of the Lord with cymbals, ^(I)harps, and lyres for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the order of the king. ⁷ The number of them along with their brothers, who were trained in singing to the Lord, all who were skillful, was ^(J)288.

⁵ 4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 shall offer praises to the Lord with the instruments ^(A)that I have made for praise.”

⁴² Heman and Jeduthun had trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments ^(A)for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to the gate.

Worship Before the Ark

³⁷ So David left Asaph and his brothers there ^(A)before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark ^(B)as each day required,
