Ezra’s Confession
4 Everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel(A) gathered around me, because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles,(B) while I sat devastated until the evening offering.(C) 5 At the evening offering, I got up from my humiliation, with my tunic and robe torn. Then I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God.(D) 6 And I said:(E)
My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face toward You, my God, because our iniquities are higher than our heads and our guilt is as high as the heavens.(F) 7 Our guilt has been terrible from the days of our fathers until the present. Because of our iniquities we have been handed over, along with our kings and priests, to the surrounding kings, and to the sword, captivity, plundering, and open shame,(G) as it is today. 8 But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from Yahweh our God to preserve a remnant(H) for us and give us a stake(I) in His holy place. Even in our slavery, God has given us new life and light to our eyes.(J) 9 Though we are slaves,(K) our God has not abandoned us in our slavery. He has extended grace to us in the presence of the Persian kings,(L) giving us new life, so that we can rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(M) to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem.
10 Now, our God, what can we say in light of[a] this? For we have abandoned the commands 11 You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: “The land you are entering to possess is an impure land. The surrounding peoples have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness by their impurity and detestable practices.(N) 12 So do not give your daughters to their sons in marriage or take their daughters for your sons.(O) Never seek their peace or prosperity,(P) so that you will be strong, eat the good things of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever.” 13 After all that has happened to us because of our evil deeds and terrible guilt—though You, our God, have punished us less than our sins deserve and have allowed us to survive[b](Q)— 14 should we break Your commands again and intermarry with the peoples who commit these detestable practices?(R) Wouldn’t You become so angry with us that You would destroy us, leaving no survivors?(S) 15 Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we survive as a remnant(T) today. Here we are before You with our guilt, though no one can stand in Your presence because of this.(U)

4 Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered together as a group because of the sin committed by those who had been led astray. As for me, I remained seated, in shock, until the evening sacrifice.
Ezra’s Prayer of Repentance
5 At the time of the evening sacrifice, I arose from my discouragement. Still in my torn garment and robe, I fell to my knees with my hands outstretched to the Lord my God, 6 and said,
“My God, I am too ashamed and hurt to turn to you, because we’re in our iniquities over our heads. Furthermore, my God, our sins have grown as high as the heavens. 7 We have lived in great sin from the days of our ancestors even until today, and because of those iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been delivered over to foreign kings, for execution, for captivity, for plunder, and for humiliation, as is the case[a] today. 8 Though now, for a moment, grace has been shown[b] from the Lord our God, leaving a few survivors to escape, and providing us a secure hold in his Holy Place, so that our God might enlighten us and give us relief from our servitude. 9 Even though we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our slavery. Instead, he has extended gracious love to us in the presence of the kings of Persia, to grant us revival, to set up the Temple of our God, to repair its damage, and to give us a protective wall for Judah and Jerusalem.
10 Now, our God, what can we say besides this? Because we have abandoned your commandments 11 that you gave in the writings[c] of your servants, the prophets:
‘The land you are entering to possess is a morally unclean land due to the moral uncleanness of the people who live in there—along with their abominations—that has filled it from one end to the other with their impurities. 12 So, therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor marry their daughters to your sons, and under no circumstances are you to seek their well-being or their wealth, so that you may remain strong, enjoying the best things the land has to give, and so that you may establish an inheritance for your children forever.’[d]
13 “After all that has happened to us because of our evil behavior, and because of our great sin—considering that you our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve[e] and have given us this deliverance— 14 should we violate your commandments by intermarrying with the nations[f] who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us until you had consumed us, with not even a remnant surviving[g] to escape?
15 Lord God of Israel, you are just: As a result, we remain here today delivered. Look at us! Because of our sin, we cannot stand in your presence as a result of everything that has happened.”

4 Then everyone who trembled(A) at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of this unfaithfulness of the exiles. And I sat there appalled(B) until the evening sacrifice.
5 Then, at the evening sacrifice,(C) I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands(D) spread out to the Lord my God 6 and prayed:
“I am too ashamed(E) and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.(F) 7 From the days of our ancestors(G) until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword(H) and captivity,(I) to pillage and humiliation(J) at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.
8 “But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious(K) in leaving us a remnant(L) and giving us a firm place[a](M) in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes(N) and a little relief in our bondage. 9 Though we are slaves,(O) our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness(P) in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(Q) and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
10 “But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands(R) 11 you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering(S) to possess is a land polluted(T) by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices(U) they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other. 12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them(V) at any time, that you may be strong(W) and eat the good things(X) of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’(Y)
13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil(Z) deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved(AA) and have given us a remnant like this. 14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry(AB) with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us,(AC) leaving us no remnant(AD) or survivor? 15 Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous!(AE) We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand(AF) in your presence.(AG)”
