The Temple Completed and Dedicated

13 Then Tattenai, governor of the region beyond the River, Shethar-Boznai, and their companions diligently did according to what King Darius had sent. 14 (A)So the elders of the Jews built, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the [a]command of (B)Cyrus, (C)Darius, and (D)Artaxerxes king of Persia. 15 Now the temple was finished on the third day of the month of Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. 16 Then the children of Israel, the priests and the Levites and the rest of the descendants of the captivity, celebrated (E)the dedication of this [b]house of God with joy. 17 And they (F)offered sacrifices at the dedication of this house of God, one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs, and as a sin offering for all Israel twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. 18 They assigned the priests to their (G)divisions and the Levites to their (H)divisions, over the service of God in Jerusalem, (I)as it is written in the Book of Moses.

The Passover Celebrated(J)

19 [c]And the descendants of the captivity kept the Passover (K)on the fourteenth day of the first month. 20 For the priests and the Levites had (L)purified themselves; all of them were ritually clean. And they (M)slaughtered the Passover lambs for all the descendants of the captivity, for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. 21 Then the children of Israel who had returned from the captivity ate together with all who had separated themselves from the (N)filth[d] of the nations of the land in order to seek the Lord God of Israel. 22 And they kept the (O)Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy; for the Lord made them joyful, and (P)turned the heart (Q)of the king of Assyria toward them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

Completion and Dedication of the Temple

13 Then, because of the decree King Darius had sent, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates(A) carried it out with diligence. 14 So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the preaching(B) of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo. They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus,(C) Darius(D) and Artaxerxes,(E) kings of Persia. 15 The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.(F)

16 Then the people of Israel—the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles—celebrated the dedication(G) of the house of God with joy. 17 For the dedication of this house of God they offered(H) a hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred male lambs and, as a sin offering[a] for all Israel, twelve male goats, one for each of the tribes of Israel. 18 And they installed the priests in their divisions(I) and the Levites in their groups(J) for the service of God at Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.(K)

The Passover

19 On the fourteenth day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover.(L) 20 The priests and Levites had purified themselves and were all ceremonially clean. The Levites slaughtered(M) the Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their relatives the priests and for themselves. 21 So the Israelites who had returned from the exile ate it, together with all who had separated themselves(N) from the unclean practices(O) of their Gentile neighbors in order to seek the Lord,(P) the God of Israel. 22 For seven days they celebrated with joy the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(Q) because the Lord had filled them with joy by changing the attitude(R) of the king of Assyria so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel.
