De ballingen die terugkeerden uit Babel

Hier volgt een lijst van Joodse ballingen, die teruggingen naar Jeruzalem en de andere steden in Juda. Hun ouders waren door koning Nebukadnezar naar Babel gedeporteerd.

De leiders waren Zerubbabel, Jesua, Nehemia, Seraja, Reëlaja, Mordechai, Bilsan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum en Baäna. Anderen die terugkeerden, waren 3-35 de familie Paros (2172 personen), de familie Sefatja (372), de familie Arah (775), de familie Pahath-Moab, de nakomelingen van Jesua en Joab (2812), de familie Elam (1254), de familie Zattu (945), de familie Zakkai (760), de familie Bani (642), de familie Bebai (623), de familie Azgad (1222), de familie Adonikam (666), de familie Bigvai (2056), de familie Adin (454), de familie Ater, de nakomelingen van Jehizkia (98), de familie Bezai (323), de familie Jora (112), de familie Hasum (223), de familie Gibbar (95), de familie Bethlehem (123), de familie Netofa (56), de familie Anathoth (128), de familie Azmaveth (42), de families Kirjat-Arim, Kefira en Beëroth (743), de families Rama en Gaba (621), de familie Michmas (122), de families Betel en Ai (223), de familie Nebo (52), de familie Magbis (156), de andere familie Elam (1254), de familie Harim (320), de families Lod, Hadid en Ono (725), de familie Jericho (345) en de familie Senaä (3630). 36-39 De priesters die terugkeerden: de familie Jedaja van Jesua (973), de familie Immer (1052), de familie Pashur (1247), de familie Harim (1017). 40 Terugkerende Levieten: de familie Jesua van Kadmiël van Hodavja (74). 41 Terugkerende zangers: de familie Asaf (128). 42 Poortwachters die terugkeerden, waren de families Sallum, Ater, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita en Sobai: in totaal 139 personen. 43-54 Tempelknechten die terugkeerden, waren de families Ziha, Hasufa, Tabbaoth, Keros, Siaha, Padon, Lebana, Hagaba, Akkub, Hagab, Samlai, Hanan, Giddel, Gahar, Reaja, Rezin, Nekoda, Gazzam, Uzza, Paseah, Besai, Asna, Me-unim, Nefusim, Bakbuk, Hakufa, Harhur, Bazluth, Mehida, Harsa, Barkos, Sisera, Temah, Neziah en Hatifa. 55-57 Ook een aantal nakomelingen van Salomoʼs dienaren maakte de reis. Dit waren de families Sotai, Sofereth, Peruda, Jaäla, Darkon, Giddel, Sefatja, Hattil, Pocheret-Hazzebaïm en Ami. 58 Bij elkaar geteld waren er 392 tempelknechten en nakomelingen van Salomoʼs dienaren bij.

59 In diezelfde tijd keerde nog een groep ballingen terug naar Jeruzalem. Deze mensen kwamen uit de Perzische steden Tel-Melah, Tel-Harsa, Kerub, Addan en Immer, maar zij konden niet aantonen dat zij werkelijk Israëlieten waren. 60 Tot hen behoorden de families Delaja, Tobia en Nekoda met in totaal 652 personen. 61 Drie priesterfamilies gingen ook naar Jeruzalem. Het waren de families Habaja, Hakkoz en Barzillai. Die laatste familie heet zo sinds hun stamvader met een van de dochters van de Gileadiet Barzillai getrouwd is. 62,63 Maar ook zij konden niet schriftelijk aantonen dat zij Israëlieten waren en mochten daarom niet meer als priester dienst doen. De leiders verboden hun zelfs te eten van dat deel van het offervlees dat voor de priesters bestemd was. Het verbod zou pas worden opgeheven wanneer een priester God met de orakelstenen, de Urim en Tummim, had gevraagd of zij werkelijk afstammelingen van priesters waren.

64,65 In totaal keerden 42.360 personen naar Jeruzalem terug. Er gingen ook nog eens 7337 slaven en slavinnen en 200 zangers en zangeressen mee. 66,67 Zij hadden 736 paarden, 245 muildieren, 435 kamelen en 6720 ezels bij zich. 68 Bij aankomst in Jeruzalem schonken enkele leiders grote bedragen voor de herbouw van de tempel. 69 Ieder gaf zoveel hij kon. De totale waarde van hun giften bedroeg ongeveer 61.000 gouden munten en 2500 kilo zilver. Er waren tevens honderd stellen onderkleren voor de priesters bij. 70 De priesters en Levieten en een aantal gewone mensen vestigden zich in Jeruzalem en omgeving. De zangers, poortwachters, tempelknechten en de rest van de mensen gingen wonen in de andere steden van Juda en keerden zo terug naar de plaats waar zij oorspronkelijk vandaan kwamen.

54 The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha.

55 The children of Solomon's servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Peruda,

56 The children of Jaalah, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,

57 The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Ami.

58 All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon's servants, were three hundred ninety and two.

59 And these were they which went up from Telmelah, Telharsa, Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not shew their father's house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:

60 The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred fifty and two.

61 And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai; which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name:

62 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.

63 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim.

64 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,

65 Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women.

66 Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five;

67 Their camels, four hundred thirty and five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.

68 And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the Lord which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place:

69 They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred priests' garments.

70 So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
