Israel's New Heart and Spirit

14 And the word of the Lord came to me: 15 (A)“Son of man, your brothers, even your brothers, your kinsmen,[a] the whole house of Israel, all of them, are those of whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, (B)‘Go far from the Lord; to us this land is given for a possession.’ 16 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Though I removed them far off among the nations, and though I scattered them among the countries, yet (C)I have been a sanctuary to them for a while[b] in the countries where they have gone.’ 17 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: (D)I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, (E)and I will give you the land of Israel.’ 18 And when they come there, (F)they will remove from it all its (G)detestable things and all its abominations. 19 (H)And I will give them one heart, and (I)a new spirit I will put within them. (J)I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh (K)and give them a heart of flesh, 20 (L)that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. (M)And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 21 (N)But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, (O)I will[c] bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God.”

22 (P)Then the cherubim lifted up their wings, with the wheels beside them, (Q)and the glory of the God of Israel was over them. 23 And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and (R)stood on the mountain that is on the east side of the city. 24 (S)And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me (T)in the vision by the Spirit of God (U)into Chaldea, to the exiles. Then the vision that I had seen went up from me. 25 And I told the exiles all the things that the Lord had shown me.

Judah's Captivity Symbolized

12 The word of the Lord came to me: (V)“Son of man, you dwell in the midst of (W)a rebellious house, (X)who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are (Y)a rebellious house. As for you, son of man, prepare for yourself (Z)an exile's baggage, and go into exile by day (AA)in their sight. You shall go like an exile from your place to another place (AB)in their sight. (AC)Perhaps they will understand, though[d] they are a rebellious house. You shall bring out your baggage by day in their sight, as baggage for exile, and you shall go out yourself (AD)at evening in their sight, as those do who must go into exile. In their sight (AE)dig through the wall, and bring your baggage out through it. In their sight you shall lift the baggage upon your shoulder and carry it out at dusk. You shall cover your face that you may not see the land, for I have made you (AF)a sign for the house of Israel.”

(AG)And I did as I was commanded. (AH)I brought out my baggage by day, as baggage for exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my own hands. I brought out my baggage at dusk, carrying it on my shoulder in their sight.

In the morning the word of the Lord came to me: (AI)“Son of man, has not the house of Israel, (AJ)the rebellious house, said to you, (AK)‘What are you doing?’ 10 Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: This oracle concerns[e] (AL)the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are in it.’[f] 11 Say, (AM)‘I am a sign for you: (AN)as I have done, so shall it be done to them. They shall go into exile, into captivity.’ 12 (AO)And the prince who is among them shall lift his baggage upon his shoulder at dusk, and shall go out. (AP)They shall dig through the wall to bring him out through it. (AQ)He shall cover his face, that he may not see the land with his eyes. 13 (AR)And I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare. And (AS)I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, (AT)yet he shall not see it, and he shall die there. 14 (AU)And I will scatter toward every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops, (AV)and I will unsheathe the sword after them. 15 (AW)And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them among the countries. 16 (AX)But I will let a few of them escape from the sword, from famine and pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the nations where they go, (AY)and may know that I am the Lord.”

17 And the word of the Lord came to me: 18 (AZ)“Son of man, (BA)eat your bread with quaking, and drink water with trembling and with anxiety. 19 And say to the people of the land, Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: (BB)They shall eat their bread with anxiety, (BC)and drink water in dismay. In this way (BD)her land will be stripped of all it contains, (BE)on account of the violence of all those who dwell in it. 20 (BF)And the inhabited cities shall be laid waste, and the land shall become a desolation; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

21 And the word of the Lord came to me: 22 “Son of man, (BG)what is this proverb that you[g] have about the land of Israel, saying, (BH)‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to nothing’? 23 Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel.’ But say to them, (BI)The days are near, and the fulfillment[h] of every vision. 24 (BJ)For there shall be no more any (BK)false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25 For I am the Lord; I will speak (BL)the word that I will speak, and it will be performed. (BM)It will no longer be delayed, but in your days, (BN)O rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it, declares the Lord God.”

26 And the word of the Lord came to me: 27 “Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, (BO)‘The vision that he sees is (BP)for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’ 28 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: (BQ)None of my words will be delayed any longer, (BR)but the word that I speak will be performed, declares the Lord God.”

The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

Of David.

27 The Lord is my (A)light and my (B)salvation;
    (C)whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold[a] of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me
    to (D)eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
    it is they who stumble and fall.

(E)Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
    yet[b] I will be confident.

(F)One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may (G)dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze upon (H)the beauty of the Lord
    and to inquire[c] in his temple.

For he will (I)hide me in his shelter
    in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
    he will (J)lift me high upon a rock.

And now my (K)head shall be lifted up
    above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
    sacrifices with shouts of (L)joy;
(M)I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and (A)baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed (B)again for Galilee. (C)And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field (D)that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, (E)wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.[a]

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, (F)“Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” ((G)For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you (H)living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 (I)Are you greater than our father Jacob? (J)He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but (K)whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (L)will never be thirsty again.[b] The water that I will give him will become (M)in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, (N)give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, (O)call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that (P)you are (Q)a prophet. 20 (R)Our fathers worshiped on (S)this mountain, but you say that (T)in Jerusalem is (U)the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, (V)“Woman, believe me, (W)the hour is coming when (X)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 (Y)You worship what you do not know; (Z)we worship what we know, for (AA)salvation is (AB)from the Jews. 23 But (AC)the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (AD)in spirit and (AE)truth, for the Father (AF)is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that (AG)Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, (AH)he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, (AI)“I who speak to you am he.”

27 Just then (AJ)his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man (AK)who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, (AL)“Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, (AM)“Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, (AN)“My food is (AO)to do the will of him who sent me and (AP)to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that (AQ)the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that (AR)sower and (AS)reaper (AT)may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, (AU)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap (AV)that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, (AW)and you have entered into their labor.”

39 Many Samaritans (AX)from that town believed in him (AY)because of (AZ)the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed (BA)because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, (BB)and we know that this is indeed (BC)the Savior (BD)of the world.”

43 After (BE)the two days he departed for Galilee. 44 (For Jesus himself had testified (BF)that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, (BG)having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For (BH)they too had gone to the feast.

Jesus Heals an Official's Son

46 So he came again to (BI)Cana in Galilee, (BJ)where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus (BK)had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, (BL)“Unless you[c] see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down (BM)before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants[d] met him and told him that his son was recovering. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour[e] the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, (BN)and all his household. 54 (BO)This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

After this there was a (BP)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is in Jerusalem by (BQ)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic[f] called Bethesda,[g] which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and (BR)paralyzed.[h] One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, (BS)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” (BT)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

(BU)Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews[i] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and (BV)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for (BW)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! (BX)Sin no more, (BY)that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews (BZ)were persecuting Jesus, (CA)because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Jesus Is Equal with God

18 This was why the Jews (CB)were seeking all the more to kill him, (CC)because not only was he (CD)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God (CE)his own Father, (CF)making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (CG)the Son (CH)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[j] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For (CI)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And (CJ)greater works than these will he show him, so that (CK)you may marvel. 21 For as the Father (CL)raises the dead and (CM)gives them life, so (CN)also the Son gives life (CO)to whom he will. 22 (CP)For the Father judges no one, but (CQ)has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they (CR)honor the Father. (CS)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (CT)whoever hears my word and (CU)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (CV)does not come into judgment, but (CW)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (CX)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (CY)the dead will hear (CZ)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (DA)will live. 26 (DB)For as the Father has life in himself, (DC)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (DD)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (DE)an hour is coming when (DF)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (DG)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

30 (DH)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and (DI)my judgment is just, because (DJ)I seek not my own will (DK)but the will of him who sent me. 31 (DL)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is (DM)another who bears witness about me, and (DN)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 (DO)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that (DP)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and (DQ)shining lamp, and (DR)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But (DS)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For (DT)the works that the Father has given me (DU)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, (DV)bear witness about me that (DW)the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me (DX)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, (DY)his form you have never seen, 38 and (DZ)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 (EA)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and (EB)it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet (EC)you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 (ED)I do not receive glory from people. 42 But (EE)I know that you do not have (EF)the love of God within you. 43 I have come (EG)in my Father's name, and (EH)you do not receive me. (EI)If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and (EJ)do not seek the glory that comes from (EK)the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, (EL)on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for (EM)he wrote of me. 47 But (EN)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
