14 “‘They have blown the trumpet,(A)
    they have made all things ready,
but no one will go into battle,
    for my wrath(B) is on the whole crowd.
15 Outside is the sword;
    inside are plague and famine.
Those in the country
    will die by the sword;
those in the city
    will be devoured by famine and plague.(C)
16 The fugitives(D) who escape
    will flee to the mountains.
Like doves(E) of the valleys,
    they will all moan,
    each for their own sins.(F)
17 Every hand will go limp;(G)
    every leg will be wet with urine.(H)
18 They will put on sackcloth(I)
    and be clothed with terror.(J)
Every face will be covered with shame,
    and every head will be shaved.(K)

19 “‘They will throw their silver into the streets,(L)
    and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold

    in the day of the Lord’s wrath.(M)
It will not satisfy(N) their hunger
    or fill their stomachs,
    for it has caused them to stumble(O) into sin.(P)

The Desolation of Israel

14 “The trumpet calls Israel’s army to mobilize,
    but no one listens,
    for my fury is against them all.
15 There is war outside the city
    and disease and famine within.
Those outside the city walls
    will be killed by enemy swords.
Those inside the city
    will die of famine and disease.
16 The survivors who escape to the mountains
    will moan like doves, weeping for their sins.
17 Their hands will hang limp,
    their knees will be weak as water.
18 They will dress themselves in burlap;
    horror and shame will cover them.
They will shave their heads
    in sorrow and remorse.

19 “They will throw their money in the streets,
    tossing it out like worthless trash.
Their silver and gold won’t save them
    on that day of the Lord’s anger.
It will neither satisfy nor feed them,
    for their greed can only trip them up.
