“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is an illustration of what will happen to Jerusalem. I placed her at the center of the nations, but she has rebelled against my regulations and decrees and has been even more wicked than the surrounding nations. She has refused to obey the regulations and decrees I gave her to follow.

“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You people have behaved worse than your neighbors and have refused to obey my decrees and regulations. You have not even lived up to the standards of the nations around you. Therefore, I myself, the Sovereign Lord, am now your enemy. I will punish you publicly while all the nations watch. Because of your detestable idols, I will punish you like I have never punished anyone before or ever will again. 10 Parents will eat their own children, and children will eat their parents. I will punish you and scatter to the winds the few who survive.

11 “As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I will cut you off completely. I will show you no pity at all because you have defiled my Temple with your vile images and detestable sins. 12 A third of your people will die in the city from disease and famine. A third of them will be slaughtered by the enemy outside the city walls. And I will scatter a third to the winds, chasing them with my sword. 13 Then at last my anger will be spent, and I will be satisfied. And when my fury against them has subsided, all Israel will know that I, the Lord, have spoken to them in my jealous anger.

14 “So I will turn you into a ruin, a mockery in the eyes of the surrounding nations and to all who pass by. 15 You will become an object of mockery and taunting and horror. You will be a warning to all the nations around you. They will see what happens when the Lord punishes a nation in anger and rebukes it, says the Lord.

16 “I will shower you with the deadly arrows of famine to destroy you. The famine will become more and more severe until every crumb of food is gone. 17 And along with the famine, wild animals will attack you and rob you of your children. Disease and war will stalk your land, and I will bring the sword of the enemy against you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

“Thus says the Lord God: (A)This is Jerusalem. I have set her (B)in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness (C)more than the nations, and against my statutes more than (D)the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes. Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are (E)more turbulent than the nations that are all around you, (F)and have not walked in my statutes or obeyed my rules, (G)and have not[a] even acted according to the rules of the nations that are all around you, therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, even I, (H)am against you. (I)And I will execute judgments[b] in your midst (J)in the sight of the nations. And because of all your abominations I will do with you (K)what I have never yet done, and the like of which I will never do again. 10 Therefore (L)fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers. (M)And I will execute judgments on you, (N)and any of you who survive I will scatter to all the winds. 11 Therefore, (O)as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, (P)because you have defiled my sanctuary (Q)with all your detestable things and with all your (R)abominations, (S)therefore I will withdraw.[c] (T)My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity. 12 (U)A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; (V)a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; (W)and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.

13 (X)“Thus shall my anger spend itself, and I will vent my fury upon them and satisfy myself. And they shall know that (Y)I am the Lord—that I have spoken in my jealousy—(Z)when I spend my fury upon them. 14 Moreover, I will make you (AA)a desolation and (AB)an object of reproach among (AC)the nations all around you and in the sight of all who pass by. 15 You shall be[d] a reproach and a taunt, a warning (AD)and a horror, to (AE)the nations all around you, (AF)when I execute judgments on you in anger and fury, and (AG)with furious rebukes—I am the Lord; I have spoken— 16 when I send against you[e] (AH)the deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon (AI)you and break your supply[f] of bread. 17 I will send famine and (AJ)wild beasts against you, (AK)and they will rob you of your children. Pestilence and (AL)blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I am the Lord; I have spoken.”
