Chapter 47
The Wonderful Stream.[a] 1 Then he brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and there! I saw water flowing out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east. The water flowed out toward the right side of the temple to the south of the altar.(A) 2 He brought me by way of the north gate and around the outside to the outer gate facing east; there I saw water trickling from the southern side. 3 When he continued eastward with a measuring cord in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and had me wade through the water; it was ankle-deep. 4 He measured off another thousand cubits and once more had me wade through the water; it was up to the knees. He measured another thousand cubits and had me wade through the water; it was up to my waist. 5 Once more he measured off a thousand cubits. Now it was a river I could not wade across. The water had risen so high, I would have to swim—a river that was impassable. 6 Then he asked me, “Do you see this, son of man?” He brought me to the bank of the river and had me sit down. 7 As I was returning, I saw along the bank of the river a great many trees on each side.(B) 8 He said to me, “This water flows out into the eastern district, runs down into the Arabah and empties into the polluted waters of the sea[b] to freshen them.(C) 9 Wherever it flows, the river teems with every kind of living creature; fish will abound. Where these waters flow they refresh; everything lives where the river goes. 10 Fishermen will stand along its shore from En-gedi to En-eglaim;[c] it will become a place for drying nets, and it will abound with as many kinds of fish as the Great Sea.(D) 11 Its marshes and swamps shall not be made fresh, but will be left for salt. 12 Along each bank of the river every kind of fruit tree will grow; their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fresh fruit because the waters of the river flow out from the sanctuary. Their fruit is used for food, and their leaves for healing.”(E)
The New Israel
Boundaries of the Land.[d] 13 Thus says the Lord God: These are the boundaries of the land which you shall apportion among the twelve tribes of Israel, with Joseph having two portions.(F) 14 You shall apportion it equally because I swore to give it to your ancestors as a heritage; this land, then, is your heritage.(G) 15 (H)These are the borders of the land: on the northern side, from the Great Sea in the direction of Hethlon, Lebo-hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah, and Sibraim, along the frontiers of Damascus and Hamath, to Hazar-enon, on the border of Hauran.(I) 17 Thus the border extends from the sea to Hazar-enon, north of the border of Damascus, the frontier of Hamath to the north. This is the northern boundary. 18 The eastern border shall be between Damascus and Hauran, while the Jordan will form the border between Gilead and the land of Israel down to the eastern sea as far as Tamar. This is the eastern boundary. 19 The southern border shall go southward from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, on to the Wadi of Egypt, and into the Great Sea. This is the southern boundary.(J) 20 The western border shall have the Great Sea as a boundary as far as a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This is the western boundary.
The Northern Portions. 21 You shall divide this land according to the tribes of Israel. 22 (K)You shall allot it as heritage for yourselves and for the resident aliens in your midst who have fathered children among you. You shall treat them like native Israelites; along with you they shall receive a heritage among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the resident alien lives, there you shall assign his heritage—oracle of the Lord God.

- 47:1–12 The life and refreshment produced wherever the Temple stream flows evoke the order and abundance of paradise (cf. Gn 1:20–22; 2:10–14; Ps 46:5) and represent the coming transformation Ezekiel envisions for the exiles and their land. Water signifies great blessings and evidence of the Lord’s presence (cf. Jl 2:14).
- 47:8 The sea: the Dead Sea, in which nothing can live. This vision of the Temple stream which transforms places of death into places of life is similar in purpose to the oracle of dry bones in 37:1–14: it offers the exiles hope for the future.
- 47:10 From En-gedi to En-eglaim: En-gedi is about halfway down the western shore of the Dead Sea; En-eglaim may have been at its northern end.
- 47:13–20 These boundaries for a restored Israel correspond to the boundaries of the Davidic kingdom at its fullest extent; they are the “ideal boundaries” of the promised land; cf. Nm 34:3–12.

47 Depois disso, me fez voltar à entrada da casa, e eis que saíam umas águas de debaixo do umbral da casa, para o oriente; porque a face da casa olhava para o oriente, e as águas vinham de baixo, desde a banda direita da casa, da banda do sul do altar. 2 E ele me tirou pelo caminho da porta do norte e me fez dar uma volta pelo caminho de fora, até a porta exterior, pelo caminho que olha para o oriente; e eis que corriam umas águas desde a banda direita.
3 Saiu aquele homem para o oriente, tendo na mão um cordel de medir; e mediu mil côvados e me fez passar pelas águas, águas que me davam pelos tornozelos. 4 E mediu mais mil e me fez passar pelas águas, águas que me davam pelos joelhos; e mediu mais mil e me fez passar pelas águas, águas que me davam pelos lombos. 5 E mediu mais mil e era um ribeiro, que eu não podia atravessar, porque as águas eram profundas, águas que se deviam passar a nado, ribeiro pelo qual não se podia passar. 6 E me disse: Viste, filho do homem? Então, me levou e me tornou a trazer à margem do ribeiro. 7 E, tornando eu, eis que à margem do ribeiro havia uma grande abundância de árvores, de uma e de outra banda. 8 Então, me disse: Estas águas saem para a região oriental, e descem à campina, e entram no mar; e, sendo levadas ao mar, sararão as águas. 9 E será que toda criatura vivente que vier por onde quer que entrarem esses dois ribeiros viverá, e haverá muitíssimo peixe; porque lá chegarão essas águas e sararão, e viverá tudo por onde quer que entrar esse ribeiro. 10 Será também que os pescadores estarão junto dele; desde En-Gedi até En-Eglaim, haverá lugar para estender as redes; o seu peixe, segundo a sua espécie, será como o peixe do mar Grande, em multidão excessiva. 11 Mas os seus charcos e os seus lamaceiros não sararão; serão deixados para sal. 12 E junto do ribeiro, à sua margem, de uma e de outra banda, subirá toda sorte de árvore que dá fruto para se comer; não cairá a sua folha, nem perecerá o seu fruto; nos seus meses produzirá novos frutos, porque as suas águas saem do santuário; e o seu fruto servirá de alimento, e a sua folha, de remédio.
As fronteiras da terra de Israel
13 Assim diz o Senhor Jeová: Este será o termo conforme o qual tomareis a terra em herança, segundo as doze tribos de Israel. José terá duas partes. 14 E vós a herdareis, tanto um como o outro; pois sobre ela levantei a mão, para a dar a vossos pais; assim, que essa mesma terra vos cairá a vós em herança.
15 E este será o termo da terra, da banda do norte: desde o mar Grande, caminho de Hetlom, até à entrada de Zedade, 16 Hamate, Berota, Sibraim (que estão entre o termo de Damasco e entre o termo de Hamate) e a cidade de Hazer-Haticom (que está junto ao termo de Haurã). 17 E o termo desde o mar será Hazer-Enom, no termo de Damasco, e na direção do norte está o termo de Hamate; este será o termo do norte. 18 E o termo do oriente, entre Haurã, e Damasco, e Gileade, e a terra de Israel, será o Jordão; desde o termo do norte até ao mar do oriente medireis; este será o termo do oriente. 19 E o termo do sul será desde Tamar até às águas da contenda de Cades, junto ao ribeiro até ao mar Grande; este será o termo para o lado do sul. 20 E o termo do ocidente será o mar Grande, desde o termo do sul até à entrada de Hamate; este será o termo do ocidente.
21 Repartireis, pois, esta terra entre vós, segundo as tribos de Israel. 22 Será, porém, que a sorteareis para vossa herança e para a dos estrangeiros que peregrinam no meio de vós, que geraram filhos no meio de vós; e vos serão como naturais entre os filhos de Israel; convosco entrarão em herança, no meio das tribos de Israel. 23 E será que, na tribo em que peregrinar o estrangeiro, ali lhe dareis a sua herança, diz o Senhor Jeová.

The Healing Waters and Trees
47 Then he brought me back to the door of the [a]temple; and there was (A)water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces (B)east; and there was water, running out on the right side.
3 And when (C)the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. 4 Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. 5 Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. 6 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river.
7 When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many (D)trees on one side and the other. 8 Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the [b]valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. 9 And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever [c]the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. 10 It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish (E)of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. 12 (F)Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; (G)their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for (H)medicine.”[d]
Borders of the Land(I)
13 Thus says the Lord God: “These are the (J)borders by which you shall divide the land as an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. (K)Joseph shall have two portions. 14 You shall inherit it equally with one another; for I (L)raised My hand in an oath to give it to your fathers, and this land shall (M)fall to you as your inheritance.
15 “This shall be the border of the land on the north: from the Great Sea, by (N)the road to Hethlon, as one goes to (O)Zedad, 16 (P)Hamath, (Q)Berothah, Sibraim (which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath), to Hazar Hatticon (which is on the border of Hauran). 17 Thus the boundary shall be from the Sea to (R)Hazar Enan, the border of Damascus; and as for the north, northward, it is the border of Hamath. This is the north side.
18 “On the east side you shall mark out the border from between Hauran and Damascus, and between Gilead and the land of Israel, along the Jordan, and along the eastern side of the sea. This is the east side.
19 “The south side, toward the [e]South, shall be from Tamar to (S)the waters of [f]Meribah by Kadesh, along the brook to the Great Sea. This is the south side, toward the South.
20 “The west side shall be the Great Sea, from the southern boundary until one comes to a point opposite Hamath. This is the west side.
21 “Thus you shall (T)divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 It shall be that you will divide it by (U)lot as an inheritance for yourselves, (V)and for the strangers who dwell among you and who bear children among you. (W)They shall be to you as native-born among the children of Israel; they shall have an inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel. 23 And it shall be that in whatever tribe the stranger dwells, there you shall give him his inheritance,” says the Lord God.

The River From the Temple
47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water(A) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.(B) 2 He then brought me out through the north gate(C) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.
3 As the man went eastward with a measuring line(D) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits[a] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. 4 He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. 5 He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river(E) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.(F) 6 He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”
Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7 When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.(G) 8 He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[b](H) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.(I) 9 Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.(J) 10 Fishermen(K) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi(L) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.(M) The fish will be of many kinds(N)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(O) 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.(P) 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.(Q) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit(R) fail. The Boundaries of the Land
13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(U) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(V) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(W)
15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(X)
“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(Y) by the Hethlon road(Z) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[c](AA) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(AB) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[d] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(AC)
18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[e] This will be the eastern boundary.(AD)
19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(AE) then along the Wadi of Egypt(AF) to the Mediterranean Sea.(AG) This will be the southern boundary.

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(AJ) for yourselves and for the foreigners(AK) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(AL) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(AM)
