Ezekiel 4

Siege of Jerusalem Symbolized

4 “Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it. ²Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp^(A) up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it.^(B) ³Then take an iron pan,^(C) place it as an iron wall between you and the city and turn your face toward^(D) it. It will be under siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign^(E) to the people of Israel.^(F)

⁴“Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel upon yourself.^[a] You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side. ⁵I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the people of Israel.

⁶“After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin^(G) of the people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year.^(H) ⁷Turn your face^(I) toward the siege of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against her. ⁸I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have finished the days of your siege.^(J)

⁹“Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt;^(K) put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side. ¹⁰Weigh out twenty shekels^[b]^(L) of food to eat each day and eat it at set times. ¹¹Also measure out a sixth of a hin^[c] of water and drink it at set times.^(M) ¹²Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement^(N) for fuel.” ¹³The Lord said, “In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them.”^(O)

¹⁴Then I said, “Not so, Sovereign Lord!^(P) I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead^(Q) or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth.^(R)”

¹⁵“Very well,” he said, “I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement.”

¹⁶He then said to me: “Son of man, I am about to cut off^(S) the food supply in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair,^(T) ¹⁷for food and water will be scarce.^(U) They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because of^[d] their sin.^(V)

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven^(A) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.^(B) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.^(C) ²For you granted him authority over all people^(D) that he might give eternal life^(E) to all those you have given him.^(F) ³Now this is eternal life: that they know you,^(G) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.^(H) ⁴I have brought you glory^(I) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.^(J) ⁵And now, Father, glorify me^(K) in your presence with the glory I had with you^(L) before the world began.^(M)

⁶“I have revealed you^[a]^(N) to those whom you gave me^(O) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. ⁷Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. ⁸For I gave them the words you gave me^(P) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,^(Q) and they believed that you sent me.^(R) ⁹I pray for them.^(S) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,^(T) for they are yours. ¹⁰All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.^(U) And glory has come to me through them. ¹¹I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,^(V) and I am coming to you.^(W) Holy Father, protect them by the power of^[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one^(X) as we are one.^(Y) ¹²While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by^[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost^(Z) except the one doomed to destruction^(AA) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.^(AB)

¹³“I am coming to you now,^(AC) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy^(AD) within them. ¹⁴I have given them your word and the world has hated them,^(AE) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.^(AF) ¹⁵My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.^(AG) ¹⁶They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.^(AH) ¹⁷Sanctify them by^[d] the truth; your word is truth.^(AI) ¹⁸As you sent me into the world,^(AJ) I have sent them into the world.^(AK) ¹⁹For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.^(AL)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

²⁰“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, ²¹that all of them may be one,^(AM) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.^(AN) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.^(AO) ²²I have given them the glory that you gave me,^(AP) that they may be one as we are one^(AQ)— ²³I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me^(AR) and have loved them^(AS) even as you have loved me.

²⁴“Father, I want those you have given me^(AT) to be with me where I am,^(AU) and to see my glory,^(AV) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.^(AW)

²⁵“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,^(AX) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.^(AY) ²⁶I have made you^[e] known to them,^(AZ) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them^(BA) and that I myself may be in them.”

Psalm 79

A psalm of Asaph.

¹O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;^(A)
    they have defiled^(B) your holy temple,
    they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.^(C)
²They have left the dead bodies of your servants
    as food for the birds of the sky,^(D)
    the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.^(E)
³They have poured out blood like water
    all around Jerusalem,
    and there is no one to bury^(F) the dead.^(G)
⁴We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
    of scorn^(H) and derision to those around us.^(I)

⁵How long,^(J) Lord? Will you be angry^(K) forever?
    How long will your jealousy burn like fire?^(L)
⁶Pour out your wrath^(M) on the nations
    that do not acknowledge^(N) you,
on the kingdoms
    that do not call on your name;^(O)
⁷for they have devoured^(P) Jacob
    and devastated his homeland.

⁸Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;^(Q)
    may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
    for we are in desperate need.^(R)
⁹Help us,^(S) God our Savior,
    for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
    for your name’s sake.^(T)
¹⁰Why should the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”^(U)

Before our eyes, make known among the nations
    that you avenge^(V) the outpoured blood^(W) of your servants.
¹¹May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
    with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
¹²Pay back into the laps^(X) of our neighbors seven times^(Y)
    the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.
¹³Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,^(Z)
    will praise you forever;^(AA)
from generation to generation
    we will proclaim your praise.
