The Valley of Dry Bones

37 (A)The hand of the Lord was upon me, and (B)he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley;[a] it was full of bones. 2 And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. 3 And he said to me, (C)“Son of man, (D)can these bones live?” And (E)I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” 4 Then he said to me, (F)“Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, (G)O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause (H)breath[b] to enter you, and you shall live. 6 (I)And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and (J)cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, (K)and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

7 So I prophesied (L)as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, (M)a rattling,[c] and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But (N)there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, (O)“Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, (P)son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from (Q)the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” 10 So I prophesied (R)as he commanded me, and (S)the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.

11 Then he said to me, (T)“Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and (U)our hope is lost; (V)we are indeed cut off.’ 12 Therefore (W)prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, (X)I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And (Y)I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And (Z)you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. 14 And (AA)I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; (AB)I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”

I Will Be Their God; They Shall Be My People

15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 (AC)“Son of man, (AD)take a stick[d] and write on it, ‘For (AE)Judah, and (AF)the people of Israel associated with him’; then take another stick and write on it, ‘For (AG)Joseph (the stick of (AH)Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with him.’ 17 And (AI)join them one to another into one stick, that (AJ)they may become (AK)one in your hand. 18 And when (AL)your people say to you, (AM)‘Will you not tell us what you mean by these?’ 19 say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am about to take (AN)the stick of Joseph (that is in the hand of Ephraim) and the tribes of Israel associated with him. And I will join with it the (AO)stick of Judah,[e] and (AP)make them one stick, (AQ)that they may be one in my hand. 20 When the sticks on which you write are in your hand (AR)before their eyes, 21 then say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, (AS)I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and (AT)bring them to their own land. 22 And (AU)I will make them one nation in the land, on (AV)the mountains of Israel. And (AW)one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer (AX)two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. 23 (AY)They shall not (AZ)defile themselves anymore (BA)with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But (BB)I will save them from all the backslidings[f] in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and (BC)they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

24 “My servant (BD)David (BE)shall be king over them, and they shall all have (BF)one shepherd. (BG)They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. 25 (BH)They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children's children shall dwell there (BI)forever, and David my servant shall be their prince (BJ)forever. 26 (BK)I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be (BL)an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land[g] and (BM)multiply them, and will (BN)set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 (BO)My dwelling place shall be with them, (BP)and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28 Then (BQ)the nations will know that (BR)I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when (BS)my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”

De botten in het dal

37 De Geest van God kwam over mij. Hij nam mijn geest mee en zette mij neer in een dal. Het dal lag vol met de botten van mensen. 2 Hij liet mij in het hele dal rondlopen. Overal in het dal lagen botten op de grond. Ze waren helemaal kaal en verdroogd. 3 De Heer zei tegen mij: "Mensenzoon, kunnen deze botten weer levend worden?" 4 Ik zei: "Heer, alleen U weet dat." Toen zei Hij tegen mij: "Profeteer tegen deze botten: Luister, verdroogde botten, naar wat de Heer zegt. 5 Dit zegt de Heer tegen jullie: Ik blaas weer leven in jullie. Ik maak jullie weer levend. 6 Ik zal jullie weer bedekken met spieren, vlees en huid. En Ik zal weer leven in jullie blazen, zodat jullie weer levend worden. Dan zullen jullie beseffen dat Ik de Heer ben."

7 Ik profeteerde dit tegen de botten, zoals de Heer mij had gezegd. Terwijl ik tegen de botten sprak, hoorde ik een gerommel. Ik zag dat de botten begonnen te bewegen! Botten die bij elkaar hoorden, kwamen bij elkaar en vormden geraamten. 8 Ik bleef kijken en zag dat er spieren, vlees en huid op kwamen. Maar er was nog geen leven in.

9 Toen zei de Heer tegen mij: "Profeteer tegen de levensgeest, mensenzoon. Zeg: Dit zegt de Heer: Kom uit de vier windrichtingen, levensgeest, en blaas in deze doden. Dan zullen ze weer levend worden." 10 Ik profeteerde dit, zoals Hij mij had bevolen. En de levensgeest kwam in hen. Ze werden weer levend en stonden op. Het was een geweldig grote menigte.

11 Daarna zei de Heer tegen mij: "Het volk Israël is als deze botten. Ze zeggen: 'We voelen ons dood en verdroogd. Al onze hoop is verdwenen. Het is afgelopen met ons.' 12 Profeteer nu tegen hen: Dit zegt de Heer: Let op! Ik open jullie graven en zal jullie uit je graf laten opstaan.[a] Mijn volk, Ik zal jullie terugbrengen naar het land Israël. 13 Mijn volk, Ik zal jullie graven openmaken en jullie eruit halen. Dan zullen jullie beseffen dat Ik de Heer ben. 14 Ik zal mijn Geest in jullie blazen, zodat jullie weer levend worden. En Ik zal jullie weer naar je land brengen. Jullie zullen beseffen dat Ik doe wat Ik heb gezegd."

De twee stukken hout

15 De Heer zei tegen mij: 16 "Mensenzoon, neem twee stukken hout. Schrijf op het ene stuk: 'Voor het koninkrijk Juda en de stammen van Israël die daarbij horen.'[b] En schrijf op het andere stuk: 'Voor het koninkrijk Israël en de stammen van Israël die daarbij horen.'[c] 17 Houd de stukken hout dan zó in je hand, dat ze één geheel worden. 18 De mensen zullen aan je vragen: 'Wil je ons uitleggen wat je daarmee bedoelt?' 19 Antwoord dan: Dit zegt de Heer: Ik neem het stuk hout van Efraïm[d] (de zoon van Jozef) en de stammen van Israël die daarbij horen, en Ik maak het één geheel met het stuk hout van Juda. Zo zullen ze samen één geheel in mijn hand zijn.[e]

20 Houd die twee stukken hout waarop je geschreven hebt, in je hand en laat de mensen ze zien. 21 Zeg dan tegen hen: Dit zegt de Heer: Ik haal de Israëlieten op uit de landen waar ze zijn gaan wonen. Ik zal hen van overal verzamelen en naar hun eigen land brengen. 22 Ik zal één volk van hen maken op de bergen van Israël. Ze zullen samen maar één koning hebben. Ze zullen nooit meer twee koninkrijken zijn, met twee koningen. 23 Ze zullen zichzelf niet langer bederven met hun walgelijke afgoden en met de vreselijke dingen die ze doen. Ik zal hen redden uit alle plaatsen waar ze vreselijke dingen hebben gedaan. Ik zal hen schoonwassen van al hun ongehoorzaamheid aan Mij. Dan zullen ze mijn volk zijn en zal Ik hun God zijn.

24 Mijn dienaar David zal hun Koning zijn.[f] Eén Koning zal hun Herder zijn. Ze zullen leven zoals Ik het wil. Ze zullen zich aan mijn wetten en leefregels houden. 25 Ze zullen wonen in het land dat Ik aan mijn dienaar Jakob heb gegeven, het land waar hun voorouders hebben gewoond. Ja, ze zullen daar voor altijd wonen: zij, hun kinderen, hun kleinkinderen en de kinderen van hun kleinkinderen. Mijn dienaar David zal voor altijd hun Koning zijn. 26 Ik zal met hen een verbond sluiten waardoor ze in vrede kunnen leven. Dat zal een eeuwig verbond zijn. Ik zal hun een eigen plaats op aarde geven. Ik zal hen tot een groot volk maken. En Ik zal voor eeuwig bij hen wonen. 27 Mijn heiligdom zal bij hen zijn. Ik zal hun God zijn en zij zullen mijn volk zijn. 28 En doordat Ik voor eeuwig bij hen zal wonen, zullen de volken beseffen dat Ik de Heer ben en dat Israël mijn eigen volk is."

De tekst op de latten blijft te lezen. Een andere mogelijkheid is, dat met de 'stukken hout' schrijfplankjes bedoeld worden. Het Hebreeuwse woord 'éts' kan vertaald worden met boom, stok, plank, of iets van hout. Een schrijfplank was een houten plankje dat met bijenwas werd bedekt. In de bijenwas kon worden geschreven. Door twee planken met de waskanten tegen elkaar te duwen, kleven de laagjes was aan elkaar en worden de twee planken als het ware één geheel. De tekst op de plankjes is niet langer te lezen. Dat zou symbolisch betekenen dat Juda en Israël als afzonderlijke koninkrijken ook niet meer zullen bestaan.   6. Ezechiël 37:24 Bedoeld wordt een zoon uit de familie van David. Iemand die net zo'n goede koning zou zijn als David was. Het is een profetie over de tweede komst van Jezus.

37 The hand of the Lord was on me,(A) and he brought me out by the Spirit(B) of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley;(C) it was full of bones.(D) 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.(E)”

4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!(F) 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life.(G) 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(H)’”

7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath;(I) prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds(J) and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded(K) me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.(L)

11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’(M) 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.(N) 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord,(O) when I open your graves and bring you up from them.(P) 14 I will put my Spirit(Q) in you and you will live, and I will settle(R) you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.(S)’”

One Nation Under One King

15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites(T) associated with him.(U)’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’ 17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.(V)

18 “When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’(W) 19 say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph—which is in Ephraim’s hand—and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’(X) 20 Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on 21 and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.(Y) 22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel.(Z) There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.(AA) 23 They will no longer defile(AB) themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,[b](AC) and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.(AD)

24 “‘My servant David(AE) will be king(AF) over them, and they will all have one shepherd.(AG) They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.(AH) 25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived.(AI) They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever,(AJ) and David my servant will be their prince forever.(AK) 26 I will make a covenant of peace(AL) with them; it will be an everlasting covenant.(AM) I will establish them and increase their numbers,(AN) and I will put my sanctuary among them(AO) forever.(AP) 27 My dwelling place(AQ) will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.(AR) 28 Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy,(AS) when my sanctuary is among them forever.(AT)’”
