The Lord's Concern for His Holy Name

16 The word of the Lord came to me: 17 (A)“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, (B)they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were (C)like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. 18 So (D)I poured out my wrath upon them (E)for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols (F)with which they had defiled it. 19 (G)I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. (H)In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. 20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, (I)they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21 But I had concern (J)for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: (K)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, (L)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 (M)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. (N)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24 (O)I will take you (P)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and (Q)bring you into your own land. 25 (R)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from (S)all your uncleannesses, and (T)from all your idols (U)I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you (V)a new heart, and (W)a new spirit I will put within you. (X)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 (Y)And I will put my Spirit within you, (Z)and cause you to walk in my statutes and (AA)be careful to obey my rules.[a] 28 (AB)You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and (AC)you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And (AD)I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And (AE)I will summon the grain and make it abundant and (AF)lay no famine upon you. 30 (AG)I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, (AH)that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then (AI)you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (AJ)It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

33 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day that (AK)I cleanse you from all your iniquities, (AL)I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. 34 And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. 35 And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like (AM)the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then (AN)the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and (AO)replanted that which was desolate. (AP)I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

37 “Thus says the Lord God: This also (AQ)I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: (AR)to increase their people like (AS)a flock. 38 Like the flock for sacrifices,[b] (AT)like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so (AU)shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. (AV)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

16 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 17 “Son of man, when the house of Israel was living on their own land, they (A)defiled it by their ways and their deeds; their way before Me was like (B)the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity. 18 Therefore I (C)poured out My wrath on them for the blood which they had shed on the land, because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I also (D)scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the lands. (E)According to their ways and their deeds I judged them. 20 When they came to the nations where they went, they (F)profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, ‘These are the (G)people of the Lord, yet they have left His land.’ 21 But I had [a]concern for My (H)holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went.

Israel to Be Renewed for His Name’s Sake

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “It is (I)not for your sake, house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. 23 And I will (J)vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned among them. Then the (K)nations will know that I am the Lord,” declares the Lord God, “when I show Myself holy among you in their sight. 24 For I will (L)take you from the nations, and gather you from all the lands; and I will bring you into your own land. 25 Then I will (M)sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your (N)filthiness and from all your (O)idols. 26 Moreover, I will give you a (P)new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the (Q)heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will (R)put My Spirit within you and bring it about that you walk in My statutes, and are careful and [b]follow My ordinances. 28 And you will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be (S)My people, and I will be your God. 29 Moreover, I will save you from all your uncleanness; and I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I (T)will not [c]bring a famine on you. 30 Instead, I will (U)multiply the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field, so that you will not receive again the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then you will (V)remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for your wrongdoings and your abominations. 32 I am not doing this (W)for your sake,” declares the Lord God; “let that be known to you. Be ashamed and humiliated for your ways, house of Israel!”

33 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your wrongdoings, I will populate the (X)cities, and the (Y)places of ruins will be rebuilt. 34 The desolated land will be cultivated instead of being a desolation in the sight of everyone who passes by. 35 And they will say, ‘This desolated land has become like the (Z)Garden of Eden; and the waste, desolated and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then the nations around you that are left will know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted that which was desolated; I, the Lord, have spoken, and I (AA)will do it.”

37 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “This too I will let the house of Israel ask Me to do for them: I will increase their people like a flock. 38 Like the (AB)flock [d]for sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so will the waste cities be filled with (AC)flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

Israel’s Restoration Assured

16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness(A) in my sight.(B) 18 So I poured out(C) my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered(D) through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.(E) 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned(F) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’(G) 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.(H)

22 “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,(I) which you have profaned(J) among the nations where you have gone.(K) 23 I will show the holiness of my great name,(L) which has been profaned(M) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,(N) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy(O) through you before their eyes.(P)

24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.(Q) 25 I will sprinkle(R) clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse(S) you from all your impurities(T) and from all your idols.(U) 26 I will give you a new heart(V) and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone(W) and give you a heart of flesh.(X) 27 And I will put my Spirit(Y) in you and move you to follow my decrees(Z) and be careful to keep my laws.(AA) 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people,(AB) and I will be your God.(AC) 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine(AD) upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.(AE) 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.(AF) 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed(AG) and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!(AH)

33 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse(AI) you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins(AJ) will be rebuilt.(AK) 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;(AL) the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.(AM) 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’(AN)

37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea(AO) and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,(AP) 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings(AQ) at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(AR)

16 Then this further message came to me from the Lord: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by the evil way they lived. To me their conduct was as unclean as a woman’s menstrual cloth. 18 They polluted the land with murder and the worship of idols,[a] so I poured out my fury on them. 19 I scattered them to many lands to punish them for the evil way they had lived. 20 But when they were scattered among the nations, they brought shame on my holy name. For the nations said, ‘These are the people of the Lord, but he couldn’t keep them safe in his own land!’ 21 Then I was concerned for my holy name, on which my people brought shame among the nations.

22 “Therefore, give the people of Israel this message from the Sovereign Lord: I am bringing you back, but not because you deserve it. I am doing it to protect my holy name, on which you brought shame while you were scattered among the nations. 23 I will show how holy my great name is—the name on which you brought shame among the nations. And when I reveal my holiness through you before their very eyes, says the Sovereign Lord, then the nations will know that I am the Lord. 24 For I will gather you up from all the nations and bring you home again to your land.

25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.[b] 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.

28 “And you will live in Israel, the land I gave your ancestors long ago. You will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will cleanse you of your filthy behavior. I will give you good crops of grain, and I will send no more famines on the land. 30 I will give you great harvests from your fruit trees and fields, and never again will the surrounding nations be able to scoff at your land for its famines. 31 Then you will remember your past sins and despise yourselves for all the detestable things you did. 32 But remember, says the Sovereign Lord, I am not doing this because you deserve it. O my people of Israel, you should be utterly ashamed of all you have done!

33 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I cleanse you from your sins, I will repopulate your cities, and the ruins will be rebuilt. 34 The fields that used to lie empty and desolate in plain view of everyone will again be farmed. 35 And when I bring you back, people will say, ‘This former wasteland is now like the Garden of Eden! The abandoned and ruined cities now have strong walls and are filled with people!’ 36 Then the surrounding nations that survive will know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt the ruins and replanted the wasteland. For I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do what I say.

37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am ready to hear Israel’s prayers and to increase their numbers like a flock. 38 They will be as numerous as the sacred flocks that fill Jerusalem’s streets at the time of her festivals. The ruined cities will be crowded with people once more, and everyone will know that I am the Lord.”
