Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Directed at Edom

35 And the word of Yahweh came[a] to me, saying,[b] 2 “Son of man,[c] set your face against the mountain of Seir and prophesy against it, 3 and you must say to it, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Look! I am against you, mountain of Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation and a wasteland. 4 Your cities I will make ruins, and you will be a desolation, and then you will know that I am Yahweh, 5 because there has been to you an ancient hostility,[d] and you handed over the Israelites[e] to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of their final punishment.[f] 6 Therefore as I live,”[g] declares[h] the Lord Yahweh, “Certainly to blood guilt I will prepare you and blood[i] will pursue; since[j] you did not hate blood,[k] it will pursue you. 7 And I will make the mountain of Seir into a desolation and ruin, and I will cut off from it both he who is crossing over and he who is returning. 8 And I will fill its mountains with its slain; your hills and your valleys and all of your watercourses, the slain by the sword will fall in them. 9 An everlasting desolation[l] I will make you, and your cities will not return, and you will know that I am Yahweh. 10 I do this because of your saying,[m] ‘The two nations and the two lands, they will be mine,[n] and we will take possession of it,’ and yet Yahweh was there. 11 Therefore, as I live,”[o] declares[p] the Lord Yahweh, “so I will deal with you according to your anger and according to your jealousy that you did,[q] because of your hatred against them, and I will make myself known among them when I judge you. 12 And you will know that I, Yahweh, I have heard all of your contemptible words that you said[r] against the mountains of Israel, saying,[s] ‘They will be desolate; they are given to us as food.’ 13 And you magnified yourself against me with your insolent speech,[t] and you spoke voluminously against me with your words—I heard! 14 Thus the Lord Yahweh says, ‘As the whole world rejoices,[u] I will make you a desolation. 15 Like your rejoicing over the inheritance of the house of Israel[v] because[w] it was desolate, I will do to you; you will be a desolation, mountain of Seir and all of Edom, indeed all of it; and they will know that I am Yahweh.’”’

Contro i monti di Edom

35 Mi fu rivolta questa parola del Signore: 2 «Figlio dell'uomo, volgiti verso il monte Seir e profetizza contro di esso. 3 Annunzierai: Dice il Signore Dio:

Eccomi a te, monte Seir,
anche su di te stenderò il mio braccio
e farò di te una solitudine, un luogo desolato.
4 Ridurrò le tue città in macerie,
e tu diventerai un deserto;
così saprai che io sono il Signore.

5 Tu hai mantenuto un odio secolare contro gli Israeliti e li hai consegnati alla spada nel giorno della loro sventura, quando ho posto fine alla loro iniquità; 6 per questo, com'è vero ch'io vivo - dice il Signore Dio - ti abbandonerò al sangue e il sangue ti perseguiterà; tu hai odiato il sangue e il sangue ti perseguiterà. 7 Farò del monte Seir una solitudine e un deserto e vi eliminerò chiunque su di esso va e viene. 8 Riempirò di cadaveri i tuoi monti; sulle tue alture, per le tue pendici, in tutte le tue valli cadranno i trafitti di spada. 9 In solitudine perenne ti ridurrò e le tue città non saranno più abitate: saprete che io sono il Signore. 10 Poiché hai detto: Questi due popoli, questi due territori saranno miei, noi li possiederemo, anche se là è il Signore. 11 Per questo, com'è vero ch'io vivo - oracolo del Signore Dio - io agirò secondo quell'ira e quel furore che tu hai dimostrato nell'odio contro di loro e mi rivelerò in mezzo a loro quando farò giustizia di te: 12 saprai allora che io sono il Signore. Ho udito tutti gli insulti che tu hai proferiti contro i monti d'Israele: Sono deserti; son dati a noi perché vi pascoliamo. 13 Contro di me avete fatto discorsi insolenti, contro di me avete moltiplicato le parole: ho udito tutto. 14 Così dice il Signore Dio: Poiché tutto il paese ha gioito, farò di te una solitudine: 15 poiché tu hai gioito per l'eredità della casa d'Israele che era devastata, così io tratterò te: sarai ridotto a una solitudine, o monte Seir, e tu Edom, tutto intero; si saprà che io sono il Signore».

A Prophecy Against Edom

35 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir;(A) prophesy against it 3 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand(B) against you and make you a desolate waste.(C) 4 I will turn your towns into ruins(D) and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(E)

5 “‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword(F) at the time of their calamity,(G) the time their punishment reached its climax,(H) 6 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed(I) and it will pursue you.(J) Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. 7 I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste(K) and cut off from it all who come and go.(L) 8 I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.(M) 9 I will make you desolate forever;(N) your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(O)

10 “‘Because you have said, “These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession(P) of them,” even though I the Lord was there, 11 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger(Q) and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.(R) 12 Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, “They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.(S)” 13 You boasted(T) against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.(U) 14 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.(V) 15 Because you rejoiced(W) when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir,(X) you and all of Edom.(Y) Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

35 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Mount Se′ir, and prophesy against it, 3 and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, Mount Se′ir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation; and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5 Because you cherished perpetual enmity, and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment; 6 therefore, as I live, says the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you are guilty of blood,[a] therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 I will make Mount Se′ir a waste and a desolation; and I will cut off from it all who come and go. 8 And I will fill your mountains with the slain; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those slain with the sword shall fall. 9 I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities shall not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you said, ‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will take possession of them,’—although the Lord was there— 11 therefore, as I live, says the Lord God, I will deal with you according to the anger and envy which you showed because of your hatred against them; and I will make myself known among you,[b] when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I, the Lord, have heard all the revilings which you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate, they are given us to devour.’ 13 And you magnified yourselves against me with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord God: For the rejoicing of the whole earth I will make you desolate. 15 As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, Mount Se′ir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the Lord.
